Soc. 43 (99), Our main result is that if (x ; ;x n ) = 0 is a system of homogeneous equations such that for every partition of the positive integers into finitely many classes there are distinct y ; ;y n in one class such that (x ; ;x n ) = 0, then, for every partition of the positive integers into finitely many classes there are distinct z ; ;z n in one class such that z ; ; z n = 0 In particular, we show that if the positive integers are split into r classes, then for every n 2 there are distinct positive integers ;x ; ;x n in one class such that = x + + x n We also show that if [;n 6 (n 2 n) 2 ] is partitioned into two classes, then some class contains ;x ; ;x n such that (Here ;x ; ;x n are not necessarily distinct.) = x + + x n Introduction In their monograph [], Erdős and raham list a large number of questions concerned with equations with unit fractions. In fact, a whole chapter is devoted to this topic. One of their questions, still open, is the following. In the positive integers, let H m = ( fx ; ;x m g m k= =x k = ;0 < x < < x m ) ; and let H denote the union of all the H m ;m. Now arbitrarily split the positive integers into r classes. Is it true that some element of H is contained entirely in one class? 0 Received 29 May 990 The first author was partially supported by NSERC.

2 In this note we show (Corollary 2.3 below) that if one does not require all the x k s to be distinct, but only many of the x k s to be distinct, then the answer to the corresponding question is yes. More precisely, we show that if the positive integers are split into r classes, then for every n there exist m n and x ; ;x m (not necessarily distinct) in one class such that jfx ; ;x m gj n and m k= =x k =. We actually show (Corollary 2.2 below) something stronger, namely that if the positive integers are split into r classes, then for every n 2 there are distinct positive integers ;x ; ;x n in one class such that = x + + x n (The preceding result then follows by taking copies of each of x ; ;x n.) Our main result (Theorem 2.) is that if (x ; ;x n ) = 0 is a system of homogeneous equations such that for every partition of the positive integers into finitely many classes there are distinct y ; ;y n in one class such that (x ; ;x n ) = 0, then, for every partition of the positive integers into finitely many classes there are distinct z ; ;z n in one class such that z ; ; z n = 0 In particular, we show that if the positive integers are split into r classes, then for every n 2 there are distinct positive integers ;x ; ;x n in one class such that = x + + x n We also prove (Theorem 2.3) the following quantitative result. Let f (n) be the smallest N such that if [;N] is partitioned into two classes, then some class contains ;x ; ;x n such that = = =x + + =x n. (Here, ;x ; ;x n are not necessarily distinct.) Theorem 2.. Let (x ; ;x n ) = 0 be a system of homogeneous equations such that for every finite colouring of the positive integers there is a monochromatic solution of (y ; ;y n ) = 0 in distinct y ; ;y n. Then for every finite colouring of the positive integers there is a monochromatic solution of (=z ; ;=z n ) = 0 in distinct z ; ;z n. Proof. Let r be given, and consider a system (x ; ;x n ) = 0 of homogeneous equations such that for every r-colouring of the positive integers there is a monochromatic solution of (y ; ;y n ) = 0 in distinct y ; ;y n. By a standard compactness argument, there exists a positive integer T such that if 2

3 [;T ] is r-coloured, there is a monochromatic solution to (y ; ;y n ) = 0 in distinct y ; ;y n. Let S denote the least common multiple of ;2; ;T. We show that for every r-colouring of [;S] there is a monochromatic solution of (=z ; ;=z n ) = 0 in distinct z ; ;z n. To do this, let c [;S]! [;r] be an arbitrary r-colouring of [;S]. Define an r-colouring c of [;T ] by setting c(x) = c(s=x); x T By the definition of T, there is a solution of (y ; ;y n ) = 0 in distinct y ; ;y n such that c(y ) = c(y 2 ) = = c(y n ) By the definition of c, this means that c(s=y ) = c(s=y 2 ) = = c(s=y n ) Setting z i = S=y i ; i n, we have that z ; ;z n are distinct, are monochromatic relative to the colouring c of [;S], and that ; ; = 0 z z n Omitting all references to distinctness, one gets the following. Theorem 2.2. Let (x ; ;x n ) = 0 be a system of homogeneous equations such that for every finite colouring of the positive integers there is a monochromatic solution of (x ; ;x n ) = 0. Then, for every finite colouring of the positive integers there is monochromatic solution of (=z ; ;=z n ) = 0. Corollary 2.. Let a ; ;a m ;b ; ;b n be positive integers such that. some non-empty subset of the a i s has the same sum as some non-empty subset of the b j s and 2. there exist distinct integers u ; ;u m ;v ; ;v n such that a u + + a m u m = b v + + b n v n. Then, given any r-colouring of the positive integers, there is a monochromatic solution of in distinct x ; ;x m ;y ; ;y n. a x + + a m x m = b x + + b n y n Proof. Let a ; ;a m ;b ; ;b n satisfy conditions. and 2. According to Rado s theorem [3] (also see [2, p. 59]), the equation a x + + a m x m = b y + + b n y n will always have a monochromatic solution x ; ;x m ;y ; ;y n, for every r-colouring of the positive integers, because of condition. The additional condition 2. is enough (see [2, p. 62 Corollary 8 2 ]) to 3

4 ensure that the equation a x + + a m x m = b y + + b n y n will always have a monochromatic solution x ; ;x m, y ; ;y n, in distinct x ; ;x m ;y ; ;y n. Theorem 2. now applies. Corollary 2.2. Let an arbitrary r-colouring of the positive integers be given. Let n; a be positive integers, with n 2, and a n. Then the equation a = x + + x n has a monochromatic solution in distinct ;x ; ;x n. Proof. This follows immediately from Corollary 2.. Corollary 2.3. Let an arbitrary colouring of the positive integers be given. Then for every n there exist m n and monochromatic x ; ;x m (not necessarily distinct) such that jfx ; ;x m gj n and m k= =x k =. Proof. Apply Corollary 2.2 (with a = ) and take copies of each of x ; ;x m. Theorem 2.3. For each n 2, let f (n) be the smallest N such that if [;N] is partitioned into two classes, then some class contains ;x ; ;x n such that = x + + x n (Here, ;x ; ;x n are not necessarily distinct.)
