Jet geometrical extension of te KCC-invariants arxiv: v3 [mat.dg] 1 Dec 2009 Vladimir Balan and Mircea Neagu June 2009; Last revised December 2009 (an added bibliograpical item) Abstract In tis paper we construct te jet geometrical extensions of te KCCinvariants, wic caracterize a given second-order system of differential equations on te 1-jet space J 1 (R,M). A generalized teorem of caracterization of our jet geometrical KCC-invariants is also presented. Matematics Subject Classification (2000): 58B20, 37C10, 53C43. Key words and prases: 1-jet spaces, temporal and spatial semisprays, nonlinear connections, SODEs, jet KCC-invariants. 1 Geometrical objects on 1-jet spaces We remind first several differential geometrical properties of te 1-jet spaces. Te 1-jet bundle ξ = (J 1 (R,M),π 1,R M) is a vectorbundle overte product manifold R M, aving te fibre of type R n, n is te dimension of te spatial manifold M. If te spatial manifold M as te local coordinates (x i ) i=1,n, ten we sall denote te local coordinates of te 1-jet total space J 1 (R,M) by (t,x i,x i 1 ); tese transform by te rules [12] t = t(t) x i = x i (x j ) (1.1) x i 1 = xi x j xj 1. In te geometrical study of te 1-jet bundle, a central role is played by te distinguised tensors (d tensors). ( ) Definition 1.1. A geometrical object D = D 1i(j)... 1k(l)... on te 1-jet vector bundle, wose local components transform by te rules ( ) D 1i(j)... 1p(m)... x 1k(u)... = D i x j x r ( ) x s 1r(s)... x p x m x k x u..., (1.2) is called a d tensor field. 1
Remark 1.2. Te use of parenteses for certain indices of te local components D 1i(j)... 1k(l)... of te distinguised tensor field D on te 1-jet space is motivated by te fact tat te pair of indices (j) or (l) beaves like a single index. Example 1.3. Te geometrical object C = C (i) x i 1 C (i) = xi 1, represents a d tensor field on te 1-jet space; tis is called te canonical Liouville d tensor field of te 1-jet bundle and is a global geometrical object. Example 1.4. Let = ( 11 (t)) be a Riemannian metric on te relativistic time axis R. Te geometrical object J = J (i) 1j x i 1, dx j, J (i) 1j = 11δ i j is a d tensor field on J1 (R,M), wic is called te - normalization d tensor field of te 1-jet space and is a global geometrical object. In te Riemann-Lagrange differential geometry of te 1-jet spaces developed in[11], [12] important rôles are also played by geometrical objects as te temporal or spatial semisprays, togeter wit te jet nonlinear connections. ( ) Definition 1.5. A set of local functions H = H (j) 1 on J 1 (R,M), wic transform by te rules 2 H (k) 1 = 2H(j) 1 ( ) 2 x k is called a temporal semispray on J 1 (R,M). x j x k 1 t, (1.3) Example 1.6. Let us consider a Riemannian metric = ( 11 (t)) on te temporal manifold R and let H11 1 = 11 d 11 2, 11 = 1/ 11, be its Cristoffel symbol. Taking into account tat we ave te transformation rule H 11 1 = H d 2 t (1.4) 2, we deduce tat te local components H (j) 1 = 1 2 H1 11x j 1 2
) define a temporal semispray H = ( H (j) 1 on J 1 (R,M). Tis is called te canonical temporal semispray associated to te temporal metric (t). ( ) Definition 1.7. A set of local functions G = G (j) 1, wic transform by te rules 2 G (k) 1 = 2G(j) 1 ( is called a spatial semispray on J 1 (R,M). ) 2 x k x j xm x j x k 1 x m xj 1, (1.5) Example 1.8. Letϕ = (ϕ ij (x)) beariemannianmetricontespatialmanifold M and let us consider ( γ i jk = ϕim ϕjm 2 x k + ϕ km x j ϕ ) jk x m its Cristoffel symbols. Taking into account tat we ave te transformation rules γ p qr = γ i x p x j x k jk x i x q x r + xp 2 x l x l x q x r, (1.6) we deduce tat te local components defineaspatialsemispray G = G (j) 1 = 1 2 γj kl xk 1 xl 1 ( G(j) 1 spatial semispray associated to te spatial metric ϕ(x). Definition 1.9. Aset oflocal functions Γ = transform by te rules ( ) 2 M (k) 1 = x k M(j) 1 ) onj 1 (R,M). Tisiscalleecanonical ( M (j) 1,N(j) i x j x k 1 t ) on J 1 (R,M), wic (1.7) and Ñ (k) l = x i x k N(j) i x l x j xm x k 1 x l xm, (1.8) is called a nonlinear connection on te 1-jet space J 1 (R,M). Example Let us consider tat (R, 11 (t)) and (M,ϕ ij (x)) are Riemannian manifolds aving te Cristoffel symbols H11 1 (t) and γi jk (x). Ten, using te transformation rules (1.1), (1.4) and (1.6), we deduce tat te set of local functions Γ ( M(j) ) (j) = 1, N i, M (j) 1 = H1 11 xj 1 and N(j) i = γj im xm 1, represents a nonlinear connection on te 1-jet space J 1 (R,M). Tis jet nonlinear connection is called te canonical nonlinear connection attaced to te pair of Riemannian metrics ((t), ϕ(x)). 3
In te sequel, let us study te geometrical relations between temporal or spatial semisprays and nonlinear connections on te 1-jet space J 1 (R,M). In tis direction, using te local transformation laws (1.3), (1.7) and (1.1), respectively te transformation laws (1.5), (1.8) and (1.1), by direct local computation, we find te following geometrical results: Teorem a) Te temporal semisprays H = (H (j) 1) and te sets of temporal components of nonlinear connections Γ temporal = (M (j) 1) are in one-to-one correspondence on te 1-jet space J 1 (R,M), via: M (j) 1 = 2H(j) 1, H(j) 1 = 1 2 M(j) 1. b) Te spatial semisprays G = (G (j) 1) and te sets of spatial components of nonlinear connections Γ spatial = (N (j) k) are connected on te 1-jet space J 1 (R,M), via te relations: N (j) k = G(j) 1 x k 1, G (j) 1 = 1 2 N(j) m xm 1. 2 Jet geometrical KCC-teory In tis Section we generalize on te 1-jet space J 1 (R,M) te basics of te KCC-teory ([1], [4], [6], [13]). In tis respect, let us consider on J 1 (R,M) a second-order system of differential equations of local form d 2 x i 2 +F(i) 1 (t,xk,x k 1 ) = 0, i = 1,n, (2.1) x k 1 = dx k / and te local components F (i) 1 (t,xk,x k 1) transform under a cange of coordinates (1.1) by te rules F (r) 1 = F(j) 1 ( ) 2 x r x j x r 1 t xm x j x r 1 x m xj 1. (2.2) Remark 2.1. Te second-order system of differential equations (2.1) is invariant under a cange of coordinates (1.1). Using a temporal Riemannian metric 11 (t) on R and taking into account te transformation rules (1.3) and (1.5), we can rewrite te SODEs (2.1) in te following form: d 2 x i 2 H1 11x i 1 +2G (i) 1 (t,xk,x k 1) = 0, i = 1,n, G (i) 1 = 1 2 F(i) H1 11x i 1 4
are te components of a spatial semispray on J 1 (R,M). Moreover, te coefficients of te spatial semispray G (i) 1 produce te spatial components N(i) j of a nonlinear connection Γ on te 1-jet space J 1 (R,M), by putting N (i) j = G(i) 1 x j 1 = 1 2 F (i) 1 x j H1 11 δi j. In order to find te basic jet differential geometrical invariants of te system (2.1) (see Kosambi [10], Cartan [8] and Cern [9]) under te jet coordinate transformations (1.1), we define te KCC-covariant derivative of a d tensor of kind T (i) (t,xk,x k 1) on te 1-jet space J 1 (R,M) via DT (i) = dt(i) +N (i) r T(r) H1 11 T(i) = = dt(i) + 1 F (i) 1 T (r) H1 11 T(i), x r 1 te Einstein summation convention is used trougout. Remark 2.2. Te KCC-covariant derivative components under a cange of coordinates (1.1) as a d tensor of type T (i) 1. DT (i) transform In suc a geometrical context, if we use te notation x i 1 = dxi /, ten te system (2.1) can be rewritten in te following distinguised tensorial form: Dx i 1 = F (i) 1 (t,xk,x k 1)+N (i) r xr 1 H 1 11x i 1 = = F (i) F (i) 1 x r H1 11x i 1, x r 1 Definition 2.3. Te distinguised tensor (i) ε 1 = F(i) F (i) 1 x r H1 11 xi 1 is called te first KCC-invariant on te 1-jet space J 1 (R,M) of te SODEs (2.1), wic is interpreted as an external force [1], [6]. Example 2.4. It can be easily seen tat for te particular first order jet reonomic dynamical system dx i = X(i) (t,xk ) d2 x i x r 1 2 = X t 5 (i) + X(i) x m xm 1, (2.3)
X (i) (t,x) is a given d tensor on J1 (R,M), te first KCC-invariant as te form ε (i) 1 = X(i) t X (i) x r xr H1 11x i 1. In te sequel, let us vary te trajectories x i (t) of te system (2.1) by te nearby trajectories (x i (t,s)) s ( ε,ε), x i (t,0) = x i (t). Ten, considering te variation d tensor field we get te variational equations ξ i (t) = xi s, s=0 (i) 1 d 2 ξ i 2 + F x j ξ j + F (i) 1 x r 1 dξ r = 0. (2.4) In order to find oter jet geometrical invariants for te system (2.1), we also introduce te KCC-covariant derivative of a d tensor of kind ξ i (t) on te 1-jet space J 1 (R,M) via Dξ i = dξi +N(i) m ξm = dξi + 1 F (i) 1 2 x m 1 ξ m H1 11ξ i. Remark 2.5. Te KCC-covariant derivative components under a cange of coordinates (1.1) as a d tensor T (i). Dξ i transform In tis geometrical context, te variational equations (2.4) can be rewritten in te following distinguised tensorial form: D Dξ i = P i m11 ξm, P i j11 = F(i) 1 x j F (i) 1 2 t x j F (i) 1 F (r) 1 x r 1 x j F (i) 1 2 x r x j 1x r F (i) 1 2 x r 1 xj 1 dh11 1 δ i j 1 4 H1 11 H1 11 δi j. F (r) 1 + Definition 2.6. Te d tensor P i j11 is called te second KCC-invariant on te 1-jet space J 1 (R,M) of te system (2.1), or te jet deviation curvature d tensor. 6
Example 2.7. If we consider te second-order system of differential equations of te armonic curves associated to te pair of Riemannian metrics ( 11 (t),ϕ ij (x)), system wic is given by (see te Examples 1.6 and 1.8) d 2 x i dx k 2 H1 11 (t)dxi +γi jk (x)dxj = 0, H11 1 (t) and γi jk (x) are te Cristoffel symbols of te Riemannian metrics 11 (t) and ϕ ij (x), ten te second KCC-invariant as te form P i j11 = Ri pqj xp 1 xq 1, Rpqj i = γi pq x j γi pj x q +γr pq γi rj γr pj γi rq are te components of te curvature of te spatial Riemannian metric ϕ ij (x). Consequently, te variational equations (2.4) become te following jet Jacobi field equations: D Dξ i +R i pqmx p 1 xq 1 ξm = 0, Dξ i = dξi +γi jmx j 1 ξm. Example 2.8. For te particular first order jet reonomic dynamical system (2.3) te jet deviation curvature d tensor is given by P i j11 = 1 2 X (i) 2 t x j X (i) x j x rxr X (i) Definition 2.9. Te distinguised tensors and R i jk1 = 1 3 P i j11 x k 1 P i k11 x j 1 (r) X x r x j + 1 2, dh11 1 δ i j 1 4 H1 11 H1 11 δi j. B i jkm = R i jk1 x m 1 Djkm i1 = 3 F (i) 1 x j 1 xk 1 xm 1 are called te tird, fourt and fift KCC-invariant on te 1-jet vector bundle J 1 (R,M) of te system (2.1). Remark Taking into account te transformation rules (2.2) of te components F (i) 1, we immediately deduce tat te components Di1 jkm beave like a d tensor. 7
Example For te first order jet reonomic dynamical system (2.3) te tird, fourt and fift KCC-invariants are zero. Teorem 2.12 (of caracterization of te jet KCC-invariants). All te five KCC-invariants of te system (2.1) cancel on J 1 (R,M) if and only if tere exists a flat symmetric linear connection Γ i jk (x) on M suc tat Proof. By a direct calculation, we obtain F (i) 1 = Γi pq(x)x p 1 xq 1 H1 11(t)x i 1. (2.5) ε (i) 1 = 0, P i j11 = R i pqj xp 1 xq 1 = 0 and Di1 jkl = 0, R i pqj = 0 are te components of te curvature of te flat symmetric linear connection Γ i jk (x) on M. By integration, te relation jkl = 3 F (i) 1 x j 1 xk 1 xl 1 D i1 = 0 subsequently leads to 2 F (i) 1 x j 1 xk 1 = 2Γ i F(i) 1 jk (t,x) x j = 2Γ i jp xp 1 +U(i) j (t,x) 1 F (i) 1 = Γi pqx p 1 xq 1 +U(i) p xp 1 +V(i) 1 (t,x), te local functions Γ i jk (t,x) are symmetrical in te indices j and k. Te equality ε (i) 1 = 0 on J1 (R,M) leads us to V (i) 1 = 0 and to Consequently, we ave U (i) j = H1 11 δi j. F (i) 1 x j 1 = 2Γ i jp xp 1 H1 11 δi j and F (i) 1 = Γi pqx p 1 xq 1 H1 11x i 1. Te condition P i j11 = 0 on J1 (R,M) implies te equalities Γ i jk = Γi jk (x) and R i pqj +Ri qpj = 0, 8
R i pqj = Γi pq x j Γi pj x q +Γr pq Γi rj Γr pj Γi rq. It is important to note tat, taking into account te transformation laws (2.2), (1.3) and (1.1), we deduce tat te local coefficients Γ i jk (x) beave like a symmetric linear connection on M. Consequently, R i pqj represent te curvature of tis symmetric linear connection. On te oter and, te equality R i jk1 = 0 leads us to Ri qjk = 0, wic infers tat te symmetric linear connection Γ i jk (x) on M is flat. Acknowledgements.
