1 PHYSICS CLUSTER MINUTES Tuesday, August, 21, :45 AM-12:00 PM Lake Worth Campus Room NS 124 ITEM 1. Action required! Faculty who teach general education courses or in academic programs and have not yet confirmed the institutional learning outcomes (ILOs) supported by the course(s) or program(s) should do so by the end of today. Next steps in finalizing ILOs and assessment will be announced next week. Confirm ILOs supported for GEN ED COURSES here. Confirm ILOs supported for PROGRAMS COURSES here. Discussion: These were confirmed at the last cluster meeting. ITEM 2. Pathways The cluster recommends that there should be 4 main areas in engineering, all sharing the same Pathway: Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering/Computer Science. In addition, the cluster recommends that all these Pathways should begin at a mathematics level of Trigonometry and/or Pre-calculus. If the results from any pre-enrollment test (PERT, SAT, ACT, AP) show that the student is not at this mathematics level then the student should have to go through a Gateway by taking either College algebra or Intermediate algebra in order to begin the Pathway. ITEM 3. PHY1001 The Cluster agreed that PHY1001 at present covers too many topics which make it impossible for students to gain in-depth knowledge of essential concepts. They agreed to consider revising course learning outcomes by splitting them into (a) core learning outcomes and (b) optional learning outcomes. Oleg volunteered to work on these and will report back to the Cluster at our next meeting. An example of the core learning outcomes could be: Perform unit conversions. Demonstrate how to add and subtract vectors algebraically by combining their scalar components. Perform calculations using the equations of motion that describe the constant-acceleration onedimensional and two- dimensional motions of a particle. Perform calculations using Newton's three laws of motion and Newton's universal law of gravitation. Perform calculations using the impulse-momentum theorem and the law of conservation of linear momentum. Perform calculations using the concepts of mechanical work, kinetic and potential energy, power, and the conservation of mechanical energy
2 Perform the kinematics, dynamics, energy, and momentum calculations associated with the rotation of a rigid body about a fixed axis. Perform calculations that describe the operation of simple machines. Perform calculations that describe the physical behavior of gases, liquids, and solids. Perform calculations using the concepts of heat and temperature. Perform calculations using the equations of electrostatics that involve the quantities of electric charge, electric force, electric field, and electric potential difference. Perform calculations using the equations of direct current circuits that involve the quantities of electromotive force, electric current, voltage, electric resistance, and electric energy and power. An example of the optional learning outcomes could be: Perform calculations using the equations of magnetism that involve the quantities of magnetic field and electric current. Perform calculations using the equations of alternating current circuits that involve the quantities of electric current, electric resistance, capacitive and inductive reactance, and impedance. Describe the reflection, refraction, interference, and diffraction of light and the properties of electromagnetic waves. Perform calculations using the equations that describe the reflection and refraction of light. Describe the quantum behavior of matter and energy. Perform calculations using the equations that describe the quantum behavior of matter and energy. Perform calculations using the equations that describe the behavior of atomic nuclei. Describe applications to existing technologies of the principles and concepts presented in this course. OTHER: Next cluster meeting will be during Faculty Development Day, on October 23, Attendance: Eva L. Suarez, Oleg Andric, Steve Stemle, Jerry O Brien, Marie, Grasso, Jang-Young Bang, Lilian Jordan, Andy Trupin, Carlos Ramos, Amaury Suarez, Johnny Maloney, and William Miner. Submitted by: William H.
