2 The basics Status A1X (2KPU) and A1Y (2KRU) are level 1 courses in the Faculty of Physical Sciences, and are each worth 20 credits. A1X is taught in semester 1, and A1Y in semester 2. 3 The basics Entry Requirements Maths at SQA Higher or equivalent. Physics at SQA Higher or equivalent is advised. Examinations A 2-hour written degree examination takes place at the end of each module. This written paper is worth 75% of the total assessment, with lab work (15%) and written assignments (10%) making up the rest. A resit is available. Class Prize The top students in A1X and A1Y will each be awarded a prize. 5 Lectures start at 5 minutes past the hour, and finish at 5 minutes to the hour. If you re late don t stand outside: just come in, but try not to disturb anyone! Always bring a pen & paper to each lecture: you must take notes! Always bring your lecture notes to tutorials! It may also be helpful to carry the textbook with you - see later.

9 Dr Siong Heng Laboratories are held in the University Observatory at Acre Road, starting from October 16 th (Optional) transport is via a block Taxi booking; you will need to pay approx 10 each to take part. Watch out for notices about this. There will be a separate laboratory handbook issued soon with more details. (See also the website).

10 Topics A1X Solar System Physics Lecturers: Dr Martin Hendry Dr Peter Sneddon In this course we describe the solar system its structure, formation and evolution introducing the basic physics of radiation, gases, and gravitation along the way.

11 Topics A1X Positional Astronomy Lecturer: Dr Declan Diver In this course we explore the general appearance of the night sky, especially the apparent movement of the stars and planets, introducing celestial co-ordinate systems and using the tools of spherical trigonometry.

12 Topics A1X Dynamical Astronomy Lecturer: Dr Graham Woan In this course we introduce Newtonian Gravitation, and its application to simple two body problems

13 Topics A1Y Observational Methods Lecturer: Dr Matt Pitkin In this course we explore the basic concepts and principles underlying the design and performance of telescopes and detectors, across the electromagnetic spectrum.

14 Topics A1Y Stellar Physics Lecturers: Prof John Brown Dr Lyndsay Fletcher In this course we explore the observations, classification, and modelling of stars: their birth, evolution and death from red giants to black holes.

15 Topics A1Y Introduction to Cosmology Lecturer: Dr Luis Teodoro In this course we explore modern observational and theoretical cosmology: from galaxies and quasars to the Big Bang.
