5 Animals in Space Human astronauts are not the only living creatures to have orbited the earth. The very first animal in space was a Russian dog named Laika. Since then NASA has sent monkeys, mice, tadpoles, fish, and even an entire ant farm to space! The animals are not sent just for fun. Scientists use them to study the effects of zero gravity, or zero-g. Their findings are used to help make life better for humans travelling in space. There are strict regulations that NASA scientists must follow to ensure the animals have their needs met and are as safe as possible while in space. There are rules about the animal s housing, food, and their general care. NASA employs a team of space veterinarians to make sure their animal astronauts are well cared for. These veterinarians are trained astronauts and help plan any voyages involving animals. They also travel with the animals and monitor their health as well as conducting research. Special attention must be placed on the housing arrangements of the animals. Mice needed wire mesh cages so they can use their toes to keep them in place. They also required special bedding since wood chips would just float around in space. Even their gravity fed water bottles had to be exchanged for pressurized water bottles. A special gel had to be developed for the ant colony to live in. Unlike sand, the gel would not compress and crush the ants during the launch. It was also infused with all the nutrients they needed to stay healthy while in space. There have been some interesting findings. Aquatic animals like fish and tadpoles swim in loops while in space because they have no way to know which Page 4

6 way is up or down without gravity! These animal astronauts have proven very important to the continued development of the space program. Page 5
