Economic ties between the two countries are booming with China set to become India s leading trade partner in the next decade. Bilateral trade is increasing. There are regular high level meetings between the two nations to further their strategic dialogue and 2006 was declared as a Sino-Indian Friendship year. A ten point strategy was adopted in that year during the visit of Mr. Hu Jintao, President of the People s Republic of China, to promote sustainable socio-economic development of the two countries and to upgrade their relations to a qualitatively new level. The strategy covered a vast canvas including development of defence cooperation, settlement of the border issues, science and technology including nuclear power and cooperation on the regional and international stage. The rise of China and India is one of the most important events in the development of the world economy in the late 20 th and early 21 st centuries. The main reason is that they are both demographic giants and, should the trend continue in the coming decades, it will significantly change the economic map of the planet. With the end of the Cold War, tensions in South Asia decreased momentarily only to become more complex than ever before. The economic angle now plays an all important role in the relationships of nations. China is not comfortable with the growing importance of India. It perceives India as a threat to its regional hegemony and its quest to be a major world power. It also envies India seeking influence in Central, South and South-East Asia and for leadership positions in regional and global organizations.
