1 Enhancement of article traing in the wave-article interaction arxiv:nlin/78v [nlin.cd] 9 Jan 7 R. Bachelard a,, A. Antoniazzi b, C. Chandre a, D. Fanelli b, M. Vittot a a Centre de Physique Théorique, CNRS Luminy, Case 97, F-88 Marseille Cedex 9, France b Diartimento di Energetica and CSDC, Università di Firenze, INFN, via S. Marta,, 59 Firenze, Italy Abstract The saturated dynamics of a Single Pass Free Electron Laser is considered within a simlified mean field aroach. A method is roosed to increase the size of the macro-article, which is resonsible for the oscillations of the intensity of the wave. This aroach is based on the reconstruction of invariant tori of the dynamics of test articles. To this aim a dedicated control term is derived, the latter acting as a small at erturbation of the system dynamics. Imlications of these findings are discussed in relation to the otimization of the laser source. PACS :.6.Cr, 7..Df, 5.5.Gg Key words: Free Electron Laser, Hamiltonian dynamics, chaos control Introduction A Free Electron Laser (FEL) generates a tunable, coherent, high ower radiation. A FEL differs from conventional lasers in using a relativistic electron beam as its lasing medium. The hysical mechanism resonsible of the light emission and amlification is the interaction between a relativistic electron beam and a magnetostatic eriodic field generated in the undulator. 2 the effect of the magnetic field, the electrons are forced to follow sinusoidal trajectories, thus emitting synchrotron radiation. This initial seed, termed sontaneous emission, is then amlified along the undulator until the laser effect is reached. Among different schemes, Single-Pass high-gain FELs are articularly attractive since they hold the romise of resulting in flexible light sources of broad theoretical and alied interests. The couled evolution of the radiation field and the N article beam in a Single-Pass FEL can be successfully modeled within the framework of a simlified Hamiltonian icture []. The N + degree of freedom Hamiltonian dislays a kinetic contribution, associated with the articles, and a otential term accounting for the self-consistent couling between the articles and the field. Hence, direct inter-articles interactions are neglected, even though an effective couling is indirectly rovided because of the interaction with the wave. The theory redicts a linear exonential instability and a late oscillating saturation, for the amlitude of the radiation field. Insection of the asymtotic hase-sace suggests that a bunch of articles gets traed in the resonance and forms a clum that evolves as a single macro-article localized in sace. The remaining articles are almost uniformly distributed between two oscillating boundaries, and oulate the so called chaotic sea. This observation allowed to derive a simlified Hamiltonian model to characterize the saturated evolution of the laser. Such reduced formulation consists in only four degrees of freedom, namely the wave, the macro-article and the two boundaries, delimiting the ortion of sace occuied by the the uniform halo surrounding the inner bulk [,]. Furthermore, the macro-article rotates around a well defined fixed oint and this microscoic dynamics is shown to be resonsible for the macroscoic oscillations observed at the intensity level. It can be therefore hyothesized that a significant reduction in the intensity fluctuations can be gained by imlementing a dedicated control strategy, aimed at confining the macro-article in sace. In addition, the size of the macro-article is directly related to the bunching arameter, a quantity of aramount imortance in FEL context []. Smith et al [] showed that a test-wave, being characterized by a frequency close to the one of the wave, can effectively destroy the macro-article and activate a consequent detraing rocess. Dimonte et al [5] imlemented this aroach on a Travelling Wave Tube and detected a significant reduction of the intensity oscillations, followed, however, by an undesired systematic collase of its mean-value. In this aer, we focus on the macro-article, sontaneously established as a result of the wave-article interaction rocess in the saturated regime. In ar-

Right : N = electrons in hase sace, at t =,.5,.5 and.75. ticular we develo a dedicated technique to influence and, ossibly, control its evolution, thus oening u the ersective of defining innovative aroaches aiming at stabilizing the laser signal. To this end, we consider a test-article Hamiltonian in a mean-field aroach and calculate a small but aroriate control term which acts as a erturbation. The latter is shown to induce an increase in size of the macro-article. A regularization of the dynamics is also observed, as confirmed by the reconstruction of invariant tori around the massive core. The aer is organized as follows. In Sec., we introduce the mean-field model and shortly outline its derivation from the original N-body Hamiltonian. In Sec., a test-article is controlled, through the reconstruction of invariant tori of its dynamics. Finally, we draw our conclusion and discuss ossible imlication of the resent analysis. The mean-field model As reviously anticiated, the dynamics of a Single-Pass FEL is successfully catured by the following Hamiltonian [] : N X s I HN = [ i cos (i + φ)], N i= () where (i, i ) are the osition and momentum of the i-th article and (φ, I) stand resectively for the hase and intensity of the radiation. In the meanfield model, the conjugated variables (φ, I) are relaced by two functions of time φ(t) and I(t), obtained from direct simultations of the self-consistent dynamics. In other words, this amounts to formally neglecting the action of the electrons on the field.
4 The N-body Hamiltonian () can therefore be maed into H N = N H ( i, i,t), i= where H (,,t) = I(t) cos(+φ(t)). () N Hence, the dynamics of a FEL can be adressed by studying the evolution of a test article, obeying Hamiltonian (). The functions I(t) and φ(t) act as external fields and are here imosed by assuming their simlified asymtotic behaviour as obtained by a frequency analysis [6] : in the reference frame of the wave. I(t) K N eiφ(t) F ǫ W k e iωkt, k= Hamiltonian control of a test-article The Hamiltonian control addresses systems which are close to integrable, i.e. whose Hamiltonian can be written as H = H +V, where H is integrable and V a erturbation of order ǫ (comared to H ). The results we use here have been roven rigorously[7,8]. In ractice, it can be shown that a suitable control term f of order ǫ exists such that H +V +f has an invariant torus at a given frequency ω. In our case, the erturbation corresonds to the oscillating art of the intensity. The interaction term of Hamiltonian () reads I(t) N cos( φ(t)) = F cos ǫre(ei W(t)). Thus, our integrable Hamiltonian can be cast in the form H = F cos, () whereas the time-deendent erturbation V is identified as V(t,) = ǫre(e i W(t)). () First, we exress Hamiltonian () into action-angle variables (ϕ, J) [9]. Then, we exand H around J = J, which in turn identifies the region where the invariant torus is reconstructed in : H (J) = E +ω (J J )+δ(j J ) +O((J J ) ).
5 Likewise, the -comonent of erturbation () is exanded as e i = M L m= n= L The control term reads [8] α m,n (J J ) m e inϕ +O((J J ) M+ ) f(ϕ,t) = V(J,ϕ,t) V(J Γ ϕ V(J,ϕ,t),ϕ,t), where Γ is a linear oerator acting on an element of the Fourier basis as : Γe i(ωt+nϕ) = ei(ωt+nϕ) i(ω +nω ). At the second order in ǫ (which is the main term), the control term reads f(ϕ,t) = ǫ w(ϕ,t)γ ϕ v(ϕ,t) ǫ δ(γ ϕ v(ϕ,t)), where v and w are the first terms in the exansion of V : which gives and V(J,ϕ,t) = v(ϕ,t)+(j J )w(ϕ,t)++o((j J ) ), Γ ϕ v(ϕ,t) = w(ϕ,t) = K L k=n= L K L k=n= L where W k are the Fourier coefficients of W : nα,n W k ω n+ω k e i(nϕ+ω kt), α,n W k e i(nϕ+ω kt), K W(t) = W k e iωkt. k= Numerically, two Fourier modes are considered for W(t) (K = ), and eleven for the -deendent art of the erturbation () (L = 5). The erturbation is of amlitude ǫ = /5. The exansion is erformed around J. (which corresonds to the energy E = ). In action-angle variables, the regularization of the dynamics (see Fig.) is clearly seen. Rather than a single torus, the control term generates a continuous set of invariant tori, thus exanding the regular domain in hase sace. Unfortunately, the exact change of variables from (ϕ,j) to (,) [9] has a singularity at the endulum searatrices. In order to imlement our control on the whole sace, we use a simlified, but regular, change of variables which 5

Pi φ Pi Figure. Left : control term f (φ, t), at t =. Right : comarison of the exact and simlified changes of variables : ϕ is lotted as a function of, for a given energy (and so for a given J). The lain line corresonds to the exact change, the dotted to the simlified one. The curves corresond, from bottom left to bottom right, to E =.5, and.5. mimics the exact one in the region of the invariant torus redicted by the control (the error in this region is less than %) (see Fig.) : tan ϕ =. In terms of the (, ) variables, our control term now reads : f (,, t) = f (arctan, t), and its regularity is now the one of the function (, ) 7 arctan. Therefore, the controlled dynamics of a test-article is given by Hamiltonian : Hc (,, t) = H (,, t) + f (,, t). 6
7 Figure. Poincare sections of a test-article of Hamiltonian H (,, t) (left) and H (,, t) + f (,, t) (right). In the (, ) variables (see Fig.), the control is successful in reconstructing some invariant tori around the macro-article. In other words, it enlarges this regular structure. Conclusion In this aer, we considered a simlified mean-field aroach to investigate the saturated dynamics of a Single Pass FEL. In articular, we showed that the size of the macro-article can be increased by adding a small ertubation to the system, thus resulting in a low cost correction in term of energy. The main idea is to build invariant tori localized at secific ositions : this method is utterly general and could be succesfully used to adjust the size of the macroarticle, thus ossibly enhancing the bunching factor. Analogously, by limiting the ortion of hase-sace sanned by the macro-article, one could aim at stabilizing the laser signal. Two future lines of investigation are foreseen. First, we intend to imlement the comuted control term in the framework of the original N-body self-consistent icture and exlore ossible beneficial effects for the evolution of the radiation field. Further, it is lanned to aly the above technique to the case of the reduced Hamiltonian of [,]. We oint out that an exerimental test of the control method on a modified Travelling Wave Tube has been done [] in absence of self-consistency. References [] Bonifacio, R., et al. (99).
