Restricted lonesu atrices arxiv: v2 [ath.co] 8 Mar 2018 Beáta Bényi Faculty of Water Sciences, National University of Public Service, Budapest beata.benyi@gail.co March 9, 2018 Keywords: enueration, poly-bernoulli nubers, restricted Stirling nubers, lonesu atrices Matheatics Subject Classification: 05A05, 05A15, 05A18, 05A19 Abstract Lonesu atrices are atrices that are uniquely reconstructible fro their row and colun su vectors. These atrices are enuerated by the poly-bernoulli nubers; a sequence related to the ultiple zeta values with a rich literature in nuber theory. Lonesu atrices are in bijection with any other cobinatorial objects: several perutation classes, atrix classes, acyclic orientations in coplete bipartite graphs etc. Motivated of these facts, we study in this paper lonesu atrices with restriction on the nuber of coluns and rows of the sae type. 1. Introduction Lonesu atrices are 01 atrices that are uniquely reconstructible fro their row and colun su vectors. They play in discrete toography an iportant role. Discrete toography is dealing with the retrieval of inforation about objects fro the data about its projections. One of the first probles that was discussed was the proble of reconstruction of a 01 atrix fro its colun and row vectors [12]. Recently, an interesting application arose in systes biology. One of the fundaental question in systes biology is how a sall nuber of signaling inputs specifies a large nuber of cell fates through the coordinated expression of thousand of genes. In [10] the authors used sequential logic to explain biological networks. The authors reduced the proble of deterining the nuber of accessible configurations by introducing the connectivity atrix representation of a network to the proble of finding the nuber of atrices satisfying certain patterns. It turned out that the connectivity atrix of the ratchet odel is a lonesu atrix. One of the crucial property of lonesu atrices is that they avoid the perutation atrices of size 2 2. (A atrix avoids a 2 2 atrix B if it does 1
not contain( it as a subatrix, ) i.e. there are no row and colun indices i,i,j,j ai,j a such that i,j = B.) a i,j a i,j Ryser [12] showed that this is an alternative characterization of lonesu atrices. Theore 1. ([12]) A 01 atrix is lonesu if and only if it does not contain any of the two subatrices: ( ) ( ) , One direction of this theore is obvious: in the case of existence of one of the subatrices above we can switch it to the other one without changing the row and colun su vectors. Lonesu atrices have interesting cobinatorial properties and they are in bijection with any other cobinatorial objects. See [2], [3] for an actual list of the related objects. As every atrix, lonesu atrix is a sequence of the colun vectors. However, since in a lonesu atrix the two perutation atrices are forbidden, there are soe constraints on the coluns that can exist together in the sae atrix. The avoidance of the two forbidden subatrices restricts the structure of these atrices. A lonesu atrix is uniquely deterined by a pair of ordered partitions of the sets of colun and row indices. Since this bijection is very iportant for us, we will describe it in details later. Brewbaker used these two interpretations to derive cobinatorially two forulas for the nuber of lonesu atrices [4]. in(n,k) =0 { } { } n+1 k +1 n { } n!! = ( 1) n ( 1)! (+1) k These nubers are the poly-bernoulli nubers (with negative k indices). Poly- Bernoulli nubers were introduced analytically in the 1990 s by Kaneko [8]. Since then there were an aount of generalizations and analogous of these nubers investigated. The wealth of cobinatorial properties, connections, and applications otivates us to investigate lonesu atrices in ore details. For instance, considering lonesu atrices without any all-zero colun revealed the connection to the well-studied research topic of perutation tableaux [3]. In this paper we study lonesu atrices with restrictions on the nuber of coluns and rows of the sae type. We derive the double exponential function, an exact forula, a recursion and soe properties of these atrices. We want to keep the paper self-contained, understandable also for readers who are not failiar in the topic. For this reason, we recall all the necessary inforations, relevant identities with proofs, and describe the bijections on that the derivation of the forulas rely. =0 2
2. Enueration of restricted lonesu atrices We will need soe terinology. Let c(m) (resp. r(m)) denote the nuber of coluns (resp. the nuber of rows) of the atrix M. We call the type of the colun (resp. row) the colun (resp. row) itself, i.e., two coluns have different types, if they differ at least at one position. Let C(M) (resp. R(M)) denotethe setofthecoluns (resp. rows)ofdifferenttypes inalonesu atrix M. We call the su of the entries (equivalently the nuber of 1 entries) in a colun (resp. row) the weight of the colun (resp. row). It can be shown that coluns of different types in a lonesu atrix have different weights. Moreover, for any two coluns c i and c j with w(c i ) < w(c j ) c j has also 1 entries at the positions of 1 s in c i. This property follows fro the characterizationof lonesu atrices with forbidden subatrices. Should c i naely have a 1 at a position where c j has a 0, one of the atrix of the forbidden set would appear. The sae arguent works for the rows. It is easy - but iportant - to see that the nuber of coluns of different type with weight at least one is equal to the nuber of rows of different types with weight at least one. It is eaningful to order the coluns in C(M) (resp. R(M)) according to their weights. We call the sequence of the different colun vectors (resp. row vectors) of a lonesu atrix that are ordered by their weight (c 1,c 2,...c ) (resp. (r 1,...,r ))the colun sequence (resp. row sequence) of the atrix. In this order c i+1 can be obtained fro c i by switching soe 0s to 1s. Let L denote the set of lonesu atrices without all-zero coluns and rows that have at ost d coluns (resp. rows) of the sae type. L (n,k) denotes the set of lonseu atrices with the properties given above of size n k. Our ain theore concerns with the enueration of the set L (n,k). Since partitions, in particular restricted partitions, play a crucial role in the next section we recall soe facts about partitions and its counting sequence Restricted partitions The nuber of partitions of an n eleent set into non-epty blocks is given by the Stirling nubers of the second kind { n }. Restriction on the size of the blocks of the partition leads to the restricted Stirling nubers of the second kind. Partitions { with this restrictions arose recently in several probles [1, 6, 9]. Let n } denote the nuber of partitions of an n eleent set into non-epty blocks such that there is no block that consists of ore than d eleents. We recall soe properties according to [9]. Let P 1,..., d (n) denote the nuber of partitions of n with i blocks of size i. Then we have { } n = P 1,..., d (n). i =; ii =n A forula for P 1,..., d (n) can be derived using cobinatorial arguentations the following way: we associate to each perutation of n a partition 3
P 1,..., l (n). The first 1 eleent are in the blocks of size d, the next 2 2 eleents will for the blocks of size 2, and so on. For i, we cut the i i eleents into blocks the ost natural way, the first i eleent for one block, the next i eleents another block and so on. This way we associated the sae partition to certain perutations. For instance, let n = 12, 1 = 2, 2 = 3, 3 = 0, 4 = 1. Then to both perutations π = and σ = the partition P 2,3,0,1 (12) = {5}{8}{2,10}{3,7}{6,12}{1,4,9,11} will be associated. The class of perutations with the sae associated partition contains (1!) 1 1!(2!) 2 2! (d!) d d! perutations, since peruting the eleents inside a block and peruting the blocks of the sae size does not influence/change the associated partition. Hence, we have { n } = i =; ii =n It is clear that if d > n then { n n! (1!) 1 1!(2!) 2 2! (d!) d d!. } = { } n and if < n d then { n = 0. The exponential generating function can be derived using the sybolic ethod [7]. In the appendix we recall soe ideas, definitions, translation rules of the sybolic ethod that we use in this paper. A partition is a set of sets, so taking the restriction on the nuber and size of the blocks also into consideration the construction is the following: n=0 SET (SET >0, (Z)), where Z is the atoic class, SET denotes the class of -sets, and SET >0, denotes the class of sets with sets of size greater than 0 but at ost d. The sybolic ethod allows us to turn this construction iediately into the generating function: { } n z n n! = (z + z 2 zd 2! + + d! ).! Using the notation introduced in [9]: E d (z) = d i=0 (z i ), i! the generating function can be written in the for: { } n z n n! = (E d(z) 1).! n=0 } 4
For calculations of values a recurrence relation could be helpful. A partition of n eleents can be obtained fro a partition of n 1 eleents by adding a new, the nth eleent to the partition. It can for a single new block or we can add it to a block of size at least 1. In the first case we can do this in { } n 1 1 ways. We obtain different kind of recurrence relations as we keep track of different properties of the block into that the nth eleent was added. When we just say that weput it intoone ofthe reainingblocks, wehavetoreducethe { } n 1 ways with the nuber of cases when we destroy the restriction on the size of the blocks. So, what is the nuber of these bad cases? Choose a d eleent block (to put the nth eleent into this block) in ( ) n 1 d ways and take an arbitrary partition of the reaining n d 1 eleents into 1 blocks of size at ost d. Hence, { } n = { } { } n 1 n ( ){ } n 1 n d 1 d 1 We can consider exactly the blocksize of the block into that we the nth eleent add. Choose the block of size i (i = 0,1,...d 1), a set of size i out of the n 1 eleents, and the reaining n d i eleents will for a restricted partition. { } n = d 1 ( n 1 i i=0 ){ n 1 i 1 The interested reader can find ore identities involving restricted Stirling nubers of the second kind in [5], [9] The proof of the ain theore Now we are ready to enuerate restricted lonesu atrices and prove the ain theore. Theore 2. The nuber of lonesu atrices without all-zero coluns and rows that have at ost d coluns (resp. rows) of the sae type is given by the following forula: L (n,k) = in(n,k) =0 { } n!! } { } k Proof. Let M L l (n,k). Let denote the length of the colun (resp. row) sequence, i.e. the nuber of different coluns in the atrix M. Rearrange the coluns and the rows of M according their weights in decreasing order obtaining M. Fro the property of the colun sequence and row sequence it follows that M has a staircase shape. To a horizontal step in this staircase shape belong soe indices, the indices of the coluns which have their last 1 entry at the height of this horizontal step. These coluns have obviously not only the sae weight, but are of the sae type. Siilarly, to each vertical 5
step belong soe indices, the indices of the rows which have their rightost 1 entry at the position of the particular vertical step. In other words, to the colunsequence (c 1,c 2,...c ) we can associate an ordered partition of n into blocks that we obtain the following way: the ith block consists of the indices of the positions in that c i 1 and c i differs, the positions where c i 1 has 0s and c i has 1s. The first block contains the positions of 1 entries of the colun c 1. Analogously, to the row sequence we associate an ordered partition of k into non-epty blocks. Hence, M is uniquely deterined by two ordered set partitions of the index sets {1,...,n} and {1,...,k} both into non-epty blocks. Since we have the restriction on the coluns and rows, the blocks of the partitions consist of at ost d eleents. Exaple 1. Consider the atrix M: M = Figure 1: The rearranged atrix M and the associated set partitions The two ordered partitions that are associated to the atrix M are and Corollary 1. Let L r (n,k), (resp. L c (n,k)) denote the set of lonseu atrices of size n k without all-zero coluns and rows such that the nuber of rows (resp. the coluns) of the sae type is at ost d, while there is no restriction on the nuber of coluns (resp. rows) of the sae type. Then we 6
have L r (n,k) = L c (n,k) = in(n,k) =0 in(n,k) =0 { } n!! { } k, { } { } n k!!. Let L (x,y) be the double exponential generating function of the lonesu atrices that contain at ost d coluns and rows of the sae type and every row and colun contains at least one 1 entry. Theore 3. We have L (x,y) = L (x,y) = xr(m) r(m)! M L y c(m) c(m)!. 1 E d (x)+e d (y) E d (x)e d (y). Proof. Ordered pairs of restricted partitions can be viewed as a sequence of pairs of sets of size at least 1 and at ost d of an [n] and a [k] eleent set. Therefore, our construction is: SEQ(SET >0, (X) SET >0, (Y)), where X and Y are atoic classes. The sybolic ethod [7] tells us that this construction translates into the generating function: L (x,y) = After siplification we obtain the theore. 1 1 (E d (x) 1)(E d (y) 1). The correspondence that was described in the proof of the ain theore (Theore 2). iplies that the atrices of the set L can be characterized an alternative way. Theore 4. Let M be a 01 atrix. M belongs to the set L (n,k) if and only if the following three properties hold: i. every colun and row consists at least one 1 entry, i.e. the atrix does not contain any all zero coluns and all zero rows, ii. two consecutive coluns in the colun sequence differ only at ost by d entries, i.e. w(c i+1 ) w(c i ) d for all i = 1,..., 1, where is the length of the colun sequence, 7
iii. two consecutive rows in the row sequence differ only at ost by d entries, i.e. w(r i+1 ) w(r i ) d for all i = 1,..., 1, where is the length of the row sequence. Proof. The theore follows fro the bijection given in the proof of theore 2. Reark 1. Poly-Bernoulli nubers of negative k indices enuerate the lonesu atrices of size n k. In [9] the authors defined the incoplete poly- Bernoulli nubers analogously to the poly-bernoulli nubers using restricted Stirling nubers of the second kind. This analytical definition does not lead to positive integers and does not count the lonesu atrices with the restriction given above. However, because of the strong connection to poly-bernoulli nubers we introduce for the nuber of the set L (n,k) the notation pb(n,k). The following two properties of pb(n,k) is iediate. i. The nubers pb(n,k) are in the paraeters n and k syetric: pb(n,k) = pb(k,n) ii. L (n,k) is not epty if and only if n d k nd, i.e. pb(n,k) = 0, ifk < n or k > nd d Proof. (i.) It is obvious fro the cobinatorial definition. (ii.) The coon length of the colun sequence and row sequence, has to satisfy: ax ( nd ), kd in(n,k). Next we derive a recursive relation, though this recursion is too coplicated for practical use. It shows only the siple recursive structure of these atrices. Theore 5. The following recursive relation holds for the nuber of restricted lonesu atrices, pb(n,k), for n 1 and k 1: ( )( ) n k pb(n,k) = pb(n (n 1 +n 2 ),k (k 1 +k 2 )), n i,k j {1,...d} i,j {1,2} n 1,n 2 k 1,k 2 where ( n n 1,n 2 ) denotes the ultinoial coefficient. 8
Proof. Let M be a atrix in L (n,k) with colun sequence (c 1,...c ) and row sequence (r 1,...r ). c is an all-1 row, that differs fro c 1 by at ost d positions. Siilarly, for rows. Delete fro the atrix M the all-1 coluns and rows obtaining M. Clearly, the colun and row sequence of M is obtained fro the colun and row sequence of M by deleting c, r, r 1, and c 1. Let n 1 = w(r 1 ), k 1 = w(c 1 ), n 2 = w(r ) w(r 1 ), k 2 = w(c ) w(c 1 ). The M is an arbitrary atrix of the set L (n n 1 n 2,k k 1 k 2 ). The positions of 1 in r 1,c 1 can be choosen in ( ) ( n n 1 resp. k ) k 1 ways, and the positions of 1 entries in c, r that are not in c 1 resp. r 1 can be choosen in ( n n 1 ) ( n 2 resp. k k1 ) k 2 ways. For the special case d = 1 only the square atrix n n exists and the theore reduces to the fact that the nuber of lonesu atrices of size n n where each colun and each row differs is (n!) 2. It is aybe interesting that indeed such a lonesu atrix encodes a pair of perutations of [n]. Exaple 2. The two perutations (written in one-line notation): π = and σ = is coded in the atrix P The special case d = 2 ay be of interest because it involves the Bessel nubers, the coefficients of the Bessel functions. An explicit forula is B(n,k) = n! 2 n k (2k n)!(n k)!. B(n,k) [13] counts the nuber of involutions of n with k pairs. Equivalently, the k-atchings (atching with k edges) of the coplete graph K n. We give in the next table the values of pb(n,k) 2 for sall n and k, i.e. the nuber of lonesu atrices in that a given type of coluns (or rows) appear at ost two ties. Reark 2. The recent author investigates with J. L. Rarez lonesu atrices with further restrictions on the nuber of coluns and rows of the sae type in a forthcoing paper [11]. 9
n/k Table 1: pb(n,k) 2 3. Appendix The sybolic ethod [7] is a powerful ethod in odern cobinatorics for the deterination of generating functions. It develops a systeatic translation echanis between cobinatorial constructions and operations on generating functions. This translation process is purely foral. A list of the translation rules of the core constructions translates into generating functions or into equations relating generating functions was given in [7]. These basic constructions enable us to take into account structures that would be hard to deal with otherwise. A cobinatorial class is a set of objects with a notion of size attached so that the nuber of objects of each size in A is finite. A counting sequence of a cobinatorial class is the sequence of integers (A n ) n 0 where A n is the nuber of objects in class A that have size n. The exponential generating function of a class A is A(z) = n 0 z n A n n! = z α α!. α A It is said that the variable z arks the size in the generating function. A n = n![z n ]A(z), where [z n ] denotes the coefficient of z n in the function A(z). An object is labeled if eachato bears an integerlabel, in such a waythat all the labels occurring in an object are distinct. A labeled object ay be relabeled in a consistent way: the order relation aong labels has to be preserved. The neutral object ǫ has size 0 and has no label: E = {ǫ} E(z) = 1. The atoic class Z is fored of a unique object of size one and label 1: Z = {1} Z(z) = z. B C The union of two classes consists of objects that are objects of the class B or of the class C. The translation rule is: A = B C A(z) = B(z)+C(z) 10
B C The labeled product of B and C is obtained by foring pairs (β,γ) with β B, γ C and perforing all possible order-consistent relabelings. The translation rule is: A = B C A(z) = B(z)C(z) SEQ k (B) The kth power of B is defined as (B B) with k factors equal to B. The translation rule is: A = SEQ ( B) A(z) = B(z) k SEQ(B) The sequence class of B is defined by SEQ(B) := {ǫ} B B B = k 0SEQ k (B). The translation rule is: A = SEQ(B) A(z) = 1 B(z) = 1 B(z) SET k (B) The class of k-sets fored fro B is a k-sequence odulo the equivalence relation that two sequences are equivalent when the coponents of one are the perutation of the coponents of the other. The translation rule is: k=0 A = SET k (B) A(z) = 1 k! B(z)k SET(B) The class of sets fored fro B is defined by SET(B) = {ǫ} B SET 2 (B) = k 0SET k (B) The translation rule is: A = SET(B) A(z) = k=0 1 k!
