QUOTIENTS OF SMOOTH PROJECTIVE TORIC VARIETIES BY µ p IN POSITIVE CHARACTERISTICS p arxiv: v1 [math.ag] 4 Sep 2018 TADAKAZU SAWADA Abstract. In this paper we show that quotients of smooth projective toric varieties by µ p in positive characteristics p are toric varieties. Introduction We work over an algebraically closed field k of positive characteristics p. A study of purely inseparable morphisms is one of a fundamental subject of algebraic geometry in positive characteristic. Let X be a smooth variety over k. It is well known that if a morphism f : X Y of varieties is purely inseparable of exponent one, then there exists a rational vector field δ H 0 (X,T X K(X)), where T X is the tangent bundle of X and K(X) is the function field of X, such that X/δ = Y. (See Rudakov and Šafarevič [4].) It is also well known that if X have a non-trivial µ p -action, then the quotient by µ p exists and the quotient map X X/µ p is purely inseparable of exponent one. (See Tziolas [5].) Tziolas shown the connection between actions of µ p and global vector fields in [5]. In this paper, we consider structures of µ p -quotients of smooth projective toric varieties by using the Tziolas characterization. The organization of this paper is as follows. In section 1, we fix notation. In section 2, we review generalities on p-closed derivations quickly. In section 3, we give explicit descriptions of global sections of the tangent bundle of smooth projective toric varieties. In section 4, we consider structures of quotients of smooth projective toric varieties by µ p in positive characteristics p. 1. Notation We follows the notation given in Hartshorne [3] and Cox, Little and Schenck [2]. Here we pick up some notations for toric varieties Mathematics Subject Classification. 14M25, 14L30. Key words and phrases. toric varieties, quotients of algebraic varieties, positive characteristics. 1

Generalities on p-closed derivations Let R be a k-algebra and D Der k R. We define the constant ring of D, denoted R D, by R D := {x R D(x) = 0}. Let K be a field over k and D Der k K. Since x p K D for all x K, the field extension K/K D is algebraic of purely inseparable of exponent one. It is known that the minimal polynomial µ D K D [t] of the K D -linear map D : K K is expressed as µ D = t pe +c e 1 t pe 1 + +c 1 t p +c 0 t for some c e 1,...,c 0 K D and that degµ D = [K : K D ]. (See Aramova and Avramov [1] for more details.) If D p = αd for some α K D, where D p is the p-times composition as a derivation, we say D is p-closed. Suppose that D is p-closed. Then D p αd = 0 for some α K D. Hence degµ D = p, so that the field extension K/K D is algebraic of purely inseparable of degree p. Let X be a smooth variety over k and δ H 0 (X,T X K(X)) = Der k K(X) be a rational vector field. Let {U i = Spec R i } i be an affine covering of X. The quotient X/δ is described by glueing {U i /δ = Spec R δ i } i and the quotient map π : X X/δ is induced by inclusions R δ i R i. If δ is p-closed, the quotient map π : X X/δ is purely inseparable of degree p.
Quotients of smooth projective toric varieties by µ p in positive characteristics p 3 3. Global sections of a smooth projective toric variety Let X Σ be an n-dimensional smooth projective toric variety. Let S = k[x ρ ρ Σ(1)] be the total coordinate ring of X Σ. We define degree 0 homomorphism α : Cl(X Σ ) Z S S([D ρ]) of graded S-modules by ϕ 1 ϕ([d ρ])x ρ e ρ, where Cl(X Σ ) = Hom Z (Cl(X Σ ),Z) and e ρ are basis of S([D ρ]) in degree [D ρ ]. Then we have the exact sequence 0 Cl(X Σ ) Z S α S([D ρ ]) Cokerα 0. This give rise to the Euler sequence 0 Cl(X Σ ) Z O XΣ O XΣ ([D ρ ]) T XΣ 0 andthereexistsanisomorphismβ : (Cokerα) T XΣ,where(Cokerα) is the sheaf associated to Cokerα. We denote by V ρ the k-vector space H 0 (X Σ,O XΣ ([D ρ ])) = (S([D ρ ])) 0 = k x ρ [D ρ ] = [div( x ρ )] for ρ Σ(1). We have isomorphisms of k-vector spaces H 0 (X Σ,T XΣ ) = V ρ e ρ / k ϕ([d ρ ])x ρ e ρ ϕ Cl(X Σ ) = V ρ / k ϕ([d ρ ])x ρ ϕ Cl(X Σ), where the first isomorphism is induced by β and the second isomorphism is defined by sending e ρ to /. Let σ Σ be an n-dimensional cone and y = ( x aα α )/( x b β β ) k[σ M], where x α and x β have no common factors, be one of the generators of k[σ M] as a k-algebra. Let ρ Σ(1) and x ξ be an element of the total coordinate ring S such that [div( x ξ )] = [D ρ ]. By considering actions to y, we think of x ρ / and ( x ξ )/ as derivations on k[σ M]: If x ρ appears in x α (resp. xβ ), then x ρ y = a ρ y (resp. b ρ y), so that x ρ / = a ρ y/y (resp. b ρ y/y) on k[σ M]. Suppose that x ρ /( x ξ ) y. If x ρ appears in x α (resp. xβ ), then ( x ξ ) ( ) y = a ρ y resp. b ρ y, so x ρ x ρ
4 Tadakazu Sawada that( x ξ ) = a ρ y x ρ y M]. ( resp. b ρ x ρ y y ) onk[σ If x ρ /( x ξ ) = y, then x ξ y = 1, so that ( x ξ )/ = /y on k[σ M]. Set V := V ρ e ρ / k and Der k O XΣ := V ρ / k ϕ([d ρ ])x ρ e ρ ϕ Cl(X Σ ) ϕ([d ρ ])x ρ ϕ Cl(X Σ). We define a restriction map ϕ U : Der k O XΣ H 0 (U,T X ) for an open set U U σ as follows: If x ρ appears in x α (resp. xβ ), then x ρ / a ρ y/y (resp. b ρ y/y). Suppose that x ρ /( x ξ ) y. If x ρ appears in x α (resp. xβ ), then ( x ξ ) a ρ y ( resp. b ρ y ). x ρ y x ρ y If x ρ /( x ξ ) = y, then ( x ξ )/ /y. Then we have a commutative diagram H 0 (X Σ,T XΣ ) β(x Σ ) V Der k O XΣ ρ XΣ U H 0 (U,T XΣ ) β(u) ρ X Σ U H 0 (U,(Cokerα) ) ϕ U whereρ XΣ U (resp. ρ X Σ U)istherestrictionmapofT XΣ (resp. (Cokerα) ). Therefore we have the following result.
Quotients of smooth projective toric varieties by µ p in positive characteristics p 5 Lemma 3.1. For any open set U U σ, we have a commutative diagram H 0 (X Σ,T XΣ ) Der k O XΣ ρ XU ϕ U H 0 (U,T XΣ ) Lemma 3.2. LetX Σ be a smoothprojecttoric varietyand S be the total coordinate ring of X Σ. Let δ H 0 (X Σ,T XΣ ) ( Der k K(X Σ )) and D be the corresponding element of Der k O XΣ, where D V ρ/. Then X Σ /δ = Proj S D. Proof. Let F S be a homogeneous element of the irrelevant ideal of S such that F S D. We denote by D X Σ Proj SD + (F) (resp. D+ (F)) the open set of X Σ (resp. Proj S D )( defined by F. Let σ Σbeann-dimensional ) p, cone. Multiplying F by ρ σ x ρ we may assume that D X Σ + (F) U σ. Since (S D ) (F) = (S (F) ) D Proj SD, we have D+ (F) = Spec (S D ) (F) = Spec (S (F) ) D. On the other hand, we have D X Σ + (F)/δ = Spec (S (F) ) δ = Spec (S (F) ) D by Lemma 3.1. Since X Σ /δ is constructed by glueing D X Σ + (F)/δ, we have X Σ /δ = Proj S D. Lemma 3.3. With the same hypotheses as Lemma 2.2, suppose that δ p = δ. Thenthere existsd = α ρx ρ / V ρ/, where α ρ F p, such that S D = S D as graded rings. Proof. In what follows we denote k(x ρ ρ Σ(1)) by k(x ρ ). There exist the following field extensions: k(x ρ ) K(X Σ ) k(x ρ ) D K(X Σ ) D The field extension k(x ρ )/k(x ρ ) D is algebraic of purely inseparable of exponent one. Since K(X Σ ) D = K(X Σ ) δ and δ is p-closed, the field extension K(X Σ )/K(X Σ ) D is algebraic of purely inseparable of degree p. Thedehomogenized elements ofthegeneratorsofk(x Σ )asak(x Σ ) D - vector space generate k(x ρ ) as a k(x ρ ) D -vector space. Hence we have [k(x ρ ) : k(x ρ ) D ] = p. Since the degree of the minimal polynomial of the k(x ρ ) D -linear map D : k(x ρ ) k(x ρ ) equals p, D is p-closed.
6 Tadakazu Sawada Let D p = αd, where α k(x ρ ) D. Since D V ρ/, we see that α k. Let β k be a root of the equation αx p x = 0. Since (βd) p = β p D p = β p αd = βd, we may assume that D p = D by replacing D by βd. D induces a k-linear map ψ : V ρ V ρ. Since D p = D, the minimal polynomial of ψ k[t] divides t p t = t(t 1) (t (p 1)). Hence D is diagonalizable. Let y ρ be an eigenvector ofψ withaneigenvaluea ρ F p forρ Σ(1). Bycoordinate changes x ρ y ρ for ρ Σ(1), we have D = a ρy ρ /y ρ V ρ/y ρ. Therefore the proof is completed. NotethatDisdecomposedasD = D ρ,whered ρ V ρ /, and D ρ defines k-linear map V ρ V ρ for each ρ Σ(1). Hence the coordinate changes x ρ y ρ induce the (well-defined) graded automorphism on S and define an isomorphism on X Σ. Lemma 3.4. Let X Σ be a smooth projective toric variety and S be the total coordinateringof X Σ. Let D = a ρx ρ / V ρ/, where a ρ F p. Then Proj S D is a toric variety. Proof. Let σ Σ be an n-dimensional cone and ρ 1,...,ρ n Σ(1) be the rays which span σ. In what follows we consider a coordinate n- tuple of an element of N with respect to Z-basis ρ 1,...,ρ n. Let U σ = Spec k[z 1,...,z n ], where z i corresponds to x ρi respectively. Suppose that D is locally expressed as φ Uσ (D) = α i z i /z i with α i F p. Then we see that X Σ /D is the toric variety whose corresponding fan is Σ in N R, where N = N +Z 1 p (α 1,...,α n ). (N is an overlattice of N.) Since X Σ /D = Proj S D, Proj S D is a toric variety. Let X be a variety over k and µ p = Spec k[x]/(x p 1). Suppose that X has a µ p -action. Tziolas shown that there exists a global vector field δ H 0 (X,T X ) such that δ p = δ and X/µ p = X/δ. (See Tziolas [5].) Theorem 3.5. Let X Σ be a smooth projective toric variety and have a µ p -action. Then the quotient X Σ /µ p is a toric variety. Proof. There exists a global vector field δ H 0 (X Σ,T XΣ ) such that δ p = δ and X/µ p = X/δ. Let S = k[xρ ρ Σ(1)] be the total coordinate ring of X Σ. Let D V ρ/ be a derivation such that δ = D. By Lemma 3.3 there exists D = ρ a ρx ρ / V ρ/, where a ρ F p, such that S D = S D as graded rings. Wehave X/µ p = X/δ = Proj S D = Proj S D by Lemma 3.2. Therefore X/µ p is a toric variety by Lemma 3.4.
