Non-Markovian opimal sopping problems and consrained BSDEs wih jump arxiv: v1 [mah.pr 18 Feb 215 Marco Fuhrman Poliecnico di Milano, Diparimeno di Maemaica via Bonardi 9, 2133 Milano, Ialy Huyên Pham LPMA - Universié Paris Didero Baimen Sophie Germain, Case rue Alber Einsein, 7525 Paris Cedex 13 and CREST-ENSAE pham@mah.univ-paris-didero.fr Federica Zeni Poliecnico di Milano, Diparimeno di Maemaica via Bonardi 9, 2133 Milano, Ialy federica.zeni@mail.polimi.i Absrac We consider a non-markovian opimal sopping problem on finie horizon. We prove ha he value process can be represened by means of a backward sochasic differenial equaion (BSDE), defined on an enlarged probabiliy space, conaining a sochasic inegral having a one-jump poin process as inegraor and an (unknown) process wih a sign consrain as inegrand. This provides an alernaive represenaion wih respec o he classical one given by a refleced BSDE. The connecion beween he wo BSDEs is also clarified. Finally, we prove ha he value of he opimal sopping problem is he same as he value of an auxiliary opimizaion problem where he inensiy of he poin process is conrolled. MSC Classificaion (21): 6H1, 6G4, 93E2. 1 Inroducion Le (Ω,F,P) be a complee probabiliy space and le F = (F ) be he naural augmened filraion generaed by an m-dimensional sandard Brownian moion W. For given T > we denoe L 2 T = L2 (Ω,F T,P) and inroduce he following spaces of processes. 1. H 2 = {Z : Ω [,T R m, F-predicable, Z 2 H 2 = E Z s 2 ds < }; 2. S 2 = {Y : Ω [,T R, F-adaped and càdlàg, Y 2 S 2 = Esup [,T Y s 2 < }; 3. A 2 = {K S 2, F-predicable, nondecreasing, K = }; 4. S 2 c = {Y S2 wih coninuous pahs}; 1
5. A 2 c = {K A 2 wih coninuous pahs}. We suppose we are given f H 2, h S 2 c, ξ L2 T, saisfying ξ h T. (1.1) We wish o characerize he process defined, for every [,T, by I = esssupe τ T (F) [ τ f s ds+h τ 1 τ<t +ξ1 τ T F, where T (F) denoes he se of F-sopping imes τ. Thus, I is he value process of a non- Markovian opimal sopping problem wih cos funcions f, h, ξ. In [5 he process I is described by means of an associaed refleced backward sochasic differenial equaion (BSDE), namely i is proved ha here exiss a unique (Y,Z,K) Sc 2 H2 A 2 c such ha, P-a.s. Y + Z s dw s = ξ + Y h, f s ds+k T K s, (1.2) (Y s h s )dk s =, [,T, (1.3) and ha, for every [,T, we have I = Y P-a.s. I is our purpose o presen anoher represenaion of he process I by means of a differen BSDE, defined on an enlarged probabiliy space, conaining a jump par and involving sign consrains. Besides is inrinsic ineres, his resul may lead o new mehods for he numerical approximaion of he value process, based on numerical schemes designed o approximae he soluion o he modified BSDE. In he conex of a classical Markovian opimal sopping problem, his may give rise o new compuaional mehods for he corresponding variaional inequaliy as sudied in [2. We usearandomizaion mehod, which consiss inreplacinghesoppingimeτ byarandom variable η independen of he Brownian moion and in formulaing an auxiliary opimizaion problem where we can conrol he inensiy of he (single jump) poin process N = 1 η. The auxiliary randomized problem urns ou o have he same value process as he original one. This approach is in he same spiri as in [8, [9, [3, [4, [6 where BSDEs wih barriers and opimizaion problems wih swiching, impulse conrol and coninuous conrol were considered. 2 Saemen of he main resuls We are given (Ω,F,P), F = (F ), W, T as before, as well as f,h,ξ saisfying (1.1). Le η be an exponenially disribued random variable wih uni mean, defined in anoher probabiliy space (Ω,F,P ). Define Ω = Ω Ω and le ( Ω, F, P) be he compleion of ( Ω,F F,P P ). All he random elemens W,f,h,ξ,η have naural exensions o Ω, denoed by hesame symbols. Define N = 1 η, A = η, and le F = ( F ) be he P-augmened filraion generaed by (W,N). Under P, A is he F-compensaor (i.e., he dual predicable projecion) of N, W is an F-Brownian moion independen of N and (1.1) sill holds provided H 2, Sc 2, L2 T (as well as A2 ec.) are undersood wih respec o ( Ω, F, P) and F as we will do. We also define L 2 = {U : Ω [,T R, F predicable, U 2 L = Ē U 2 s 2 da s = Ē U s 2 dn s < }. 2
We will consider he BSDE Ȳ + Z s dw s + Ū s dn s = ξ1 η T + wih he consrain (,T f s 1 [,η (s)ds+ h s dn s + K T K, [,T, (,T (2.4) U, da ( ω) P(d ω) a.s. (2.5) We sayha aquadruple(ȳ, Z,Ū, K) isasoluion ohisbsdeifi belongsos 2 H 2 L 2 A 2, (2.4) holds P-a.s., and (2.5) is saisfied. We say ha (Ȳ, Z,Ū, K) is minimal if for any oher soluion (Ȳ, Z,Ū, K ) we have, P-a.s, Ȳ Ȳ for all [,T. Our firs main resul shows he exisence of a minimal soluion o he BSDE wih sign consrain and makes he connecion wih refleced BSDEs. Theorem 2.1 Under (1.1) here exiss a unique minimal soluion (Ȳ, Z,Ū, K) o (2.4)-(2.5). I can be defined saring from he soluion (Y,Z,K) o he refleced BSDE (1.2)-(1.3) and seing, for ω = (ω,ω ), [,T, Ȳ ( ω) = Y (ω)1 <η(ω ), Z ( ω) = Z (ω)1 η(ω ), (2.6) Ū ( ω) = (h (ω) Y (ω))1 η(ω ), K ( ω) = K η(ω )(ω). (2.7) Now we formulae an auxiliary opimizaion problem. Le V = {ν : Ω [, ) (, ), F-predicable and bounded}. For ν V define ( L ν = exp (1 ν s )da s + ) ( η ) logν s dn s = exp (1 ν s )ds (1 <η +ν η 1 η ). Since ν is bounded, L ν is an F-maringale on [,T under P and we can define an equivalen probabiliy P ν on ( Ω, F) seing P ν (d ω) = L ν ( ω) P(d ω). By a heorem of Girsanov ype (Theorem 4.5 in [7) on [,T he F-compensaor of N under P ν is ν sda s, [,T, and W remains a Brownian moion under P ν. We wish o characerize he value process J defined, for every [,T, by [ η J = esssupē ν f s ds+h η 1 <η<t +ξ1 η T F. (2.8) ν V η Our second resul provides a dual represenaion in erms of conrol inensiy of he minimal soluion o he BSDE wih sign consrain. Theorem 2.2 Under (1.1), le (Ȳ, Z,Ū, K) be he minimal soluion o (2.4)-(2.5). Then, for every [,T, we have Ȳ = J P-a.s. The equaliies J = Ȳ = Y = I immediaely give he following corollary. Corollary 2.1 Under (1.1), le (Ȳ, Z,Ū, K) be he minimal soluion o (2.4)-(2.5). Then [ τ Ȳ = sup E τ T (F) [ η f s ds+h τ 1 τ<t +ξ1 τ T = supē ν f s ds+h η 1 η<t +ξ1 η T. ν V 3
3 Proofs Proof of Theorem 2.1. Uniqueness of he minimal soluion is no difficul and i is esablished as in [9, Remark 2.1. Le (Y,Z,K) Sc 2 H 2 A 2 c be he soluion o (1.2)-(1.3), and le (Ȳ, Z,Ū, K) be defined by (2.6), (2.7). Clearly i belongs o S 2 H 2 L 2 A 2 and he consrain (2.5) is saisfied due o he reflecion inequaliy in (1.3). The fac ha i saisfies equaion (2.4) can be proved by direc subsiuion, by considering he hree disjoin evens {η > T}, { < η < T}, { < η < T,η T}, whose union is Ω, P-a.s. Indeed, on {η > T} we have Z s = Z s for every s [,T and, by he local propery of he sochasic inegral, Z s dw s = Z s dw s, P-a.s. and (2.4) reduces o (1.2). On { < η < T} (2.4) reduces o Ȳ + Z s dw s +Ūη = η f s ds+h η + K T K, P a.s.; since Z s dw s = η Z sdw s P-a.s., h η Ūη = Y η and, on he se { < η < T}, Ȳ = Y and K T K = K η K, his reduces o η η Y + Z s dw s = f s ds+y η +K η K, P a.s. which again holds by (1.2). Finally, on { < η < T,η T} he verificaion of (2.4) is rivial, so we have proved ha (Ȳ, Z,Ū, K) is indeed a soluion. Is minimaliy propery will be proved laer. To proceed furher we recall a resul from [5: for every ineger n 1, le (Y n,z n ) S 2 c H 2 denoe he unique soluion o he penalized BSDE Y n + Zs n dw s = ξ + f s ds+n (Y n s h s ) ds, [,T; (3.9) hen, seing K n = n (Y s n h s ) ds, he riple (Y n,z n,k n ) converges in Sc 2 H 2 A 2 c o he soluion (Y, Z, K) o (1.2)-(1.3). Define Ȳ n ( ω) = Y n (ω)1 <η(ω ), Zn ( ω) = Z n (ω)1 η(ω ), Ū n ( ω) = (h (ω) Y n (ω))1 η(ω ), and noe ha Ȳ n Ȳ in S2. Lemma 3.1 (Ȳ n, Z n,ūn ) is he unique soluion in S 2 H 2 L 2 o he BSDE: P-a.s., Ȳ n + Z s n dw s + Ūs n dn s = ξ1 η T + f s 1 [,η (s)ds (3.1) (,T + h s dn s +n (Ūn s ) + 1 [,η (s)ds, [,T. (,T Proof. (Ȳ n, Z n,ūn ) belongs o S 2 H 2 L 2 and, proceeding as in he proof of Theorem 2.1 above, one verifies by direc subsiuion ha (3.1) holds, as a consequence of equaion (3.9). The uniqueness (which is no needed in he sequel) follows from he resuls in [1. 4
We will idenify Ȳ n wih he value process of a penalized opimizaion problem. Le V n denoe he se of all ν V aking values in (,n and le us define (compare wih (2.8)) [ η J n = esssupē ν f s ds+h η 1 <η<t +ξ1 η T F. (3.11) ν V n η Lemma 3.2 For every [,T, we have Ȳ n = J n P-a.s. Proof. We fix any ν V n and recall ha, under he probabiliy P ν, W is a Brownian moion and he compensaor of N on [,T is ν sda s, [,T. Taking he condiional expecaion given F in (3.1) we obain [ [ T Ȳ n +Ēν Ūs n ν sda s F = Ēν ξ1 η T + f s 1 [,η (s)ds+ h s dn s F (,T (,T [ +Ēν n (Ūn s ) + 1 [,η (s)ds F. We noe ha (,T h sdn s = h η 1 <η T = h η 1 <η<t Pν -a.s., since η T P-a.s. and hence P ν -a.s. Since da s = 1 [,η (s)ds we have [ η [ T Ȳ n = Ēν ξ1 η T + f s ds+h η 1 <η<t F +Ēν (n(ūn s ) + Ūn s ν s )1 [,η (s)ds F. η (3.12) Since nu + U ν for every real number U and every ν (,n we obain [ η Ȳ n Ēν ξ1 η T + f s ds+h η 1 <η<t F η for arbirary ν V n, which implies Ȳ n J n. On he oher hand, seing νǫ s = n1ūn s > + ǫ1 1 Ū n s ǫ(ūn s ) 1 1 Ū n s < 1, we have νǫ V n for < ǫ 1 and n(ūn s )+ Ūn s ν s ǫ. Choosing ν = ν ǫ in (3.12) we obain η Ȳ n [ξ1 Ēν ǫ η T + f s ds+h η 1 <η<t F +ǫt J n +ǫt η and we have he desired conclusion. Proof of Theorem 2.2. Le (Ȳ, Z,Ū, K ) be any (no necessarily minimal) soluion o (2.4)-(2.5). Since Ū is nonposiive and K is nondecreasing we have Ȳ + η Z s dw s ξ1 η T + f s 1 [,η (s)ds+ h s dn s = ξ1 η T + f s ds+h η 1 <η T. (,T η We fix any ν V and recall ha W is a Brownian moion under he probabiliy P ν. Taking he condiional expecaion given F we obain [ η Ȳ Ēν ξ1 η T + f s ds+h η 1 <η<t F, η where we have used again he fac ha η T P-a.s. and hence P ν -a.s. Since ν was arbirary in V i follows ha Ȳ J and in paricular Ȳ J. 5
Nex we prove he opposie inequaliy. Comparing (2.8) wih (3.11), since V n V i follows ha J n J. By he previous lemma we deduce ha Ȳ n J and since Ȳ n Ȳ in S2 we conclude ha Ȳ J. Conclusion of he proof of Theorem 2.1. I remained o be shown ha he soluion (Ȳ, Z,Ū, K) consruced above is minimal. Le (Ȳ, Z,Ū, K ) be any oher soluion o (2.4)- (2.5). In he previous proof i was shown ha, for every [,T, Ȳ J P-a.s. Since we know from Theorem 2.2 ha Ȳ = J we deduce ha Ȳ Ȳ. Since boh processes are càdlàg, his inequaliy holds for every, up o a P-null se. References [1 Becherer, D. Bounded soluions o backward SDE s wih jumps for uiliy opimizaion and indifference hedging.
