MEASURIN THE NON-STOPPIN TIMENESS OF ENDS OF PREVISIBLE SETS arxiv:8.59v [mah.pr] 6 Oc 8 JU-YI YEN ),) AND MARC YOR 3),4) Absrac. In his paper, we propose several measuremens of he nonsopping imeness of ends of previsible ses, such ha avoids sopping imes, in an ambian filraion. We hen sudy several explici examples, involving las passage imes of some remarkable maringales.. Inroducion: Abou ends of previsible ses In his paper, we are ineresed in random imes defined on a filered probabiliy space Ω,F,F ),P) as ends of F ) previsible ses Γ, ha is: Γ = sup{ :,ω) Γ} ) For simpliciy, we shall make he following assumpions: C): All F ),P) maringales are coninuous; A): For any F ) sopping ime T, P = T) =. [C) sands for coninuous, and A) for avoiding ]. To such a random ime, one associaes he Azéma supermaringale: Z = P > F ), ) which, under CA), admis a coninuous version. In a number of quesions, i is very ineresing o consider he smalles filraion F ), which conains F ), and makes a sopping ime; his filraion is usually denoed F ). One of he ineress of Z ) is ha i allows o wrie any F ) maringale as a semimaringale in F ) ; see e.g. [, 3, 8, 9], for boh general formulae and many examples. Recenly, i has been undersood ha Black-Scholes like formulae are closely relaed wih cerain such s, hus hrowing a new ligh on a cornersone of Mahemaical Finance, see, e.g. [6, 7]. In he presen paper, wih A) as our essenial hypohesis, we would like o measure how much differs from a F ) sopping ime. The remainder of his paper consiss in wo secions: - In Secion, we propose several crierions o measure he NST Non Sopping Timeness) of s which saisfy CA); i is no surprising ha we ge ineresed in he funcion: m ) = E[ ) P F ) ) ]. - In Secion 3, we compue explicily his funcion m for various examples, where is he las passage ime a a level of a maringale which convergeso, as. Dae: Ocober 3, 8. Key words and phrases. Azéma supermaringale, las passage imes.
. Several possible NST crierions.. A fundamenal funcion: m ). Le us consider several possible crierions: firs of all, if were a F ) sopping ime, hen he process ) would be idenically equal o Z P F ). Thus, he funcion m ), ) ells us abou he NST of. Nex, a simple bu useful remark is ha: m ) = E [ Z Z. 3).. Definiion of m, m, and m and proof ha m = /4 = m. Insead of considering he full funcion m ), ), we may consider only: m = sup m ) 4) as a global measuremen of he NST of. Here are wo oher, a priori naural, measuremens of he NST of : [ m )) ] = E Z Z 5) and sup m = sup E [ Z T T Z T where T runs over all F ) sopping imes. However, we canno expec o learn very much from m and m, since i is easily shown ha Proof. i) The fac ha m sup x [,] sup a ],[ 6) m = /4 = m. 7) = /4 follows immediaely from: x x)) = /4, and he fac ha, a.s., he range of he process Z, ) is [,] since Z =, Z =, and Z, ) is coninuous. ii) Le us consider T a = inf{ : Z = a}, for < a <. Then: Z Z [ ) =Ta = a a); hence, Z Ta Z Ta = sup a a)) = /4. a ],[.3. The opional sopping ime discrepancy µ. Le us no forge eiher he nice characerizaion [4], of sopping imes, among random imes, as he imes τ such ha for every bounded maringale M ) one has M L F ) EM ) M τ = E[M F τ ] where, here under our hypohesis C), we may define F τ = σ{h τ ; H previsible}. Thus, as a 4h possible measuremen of he NST of, we may ake: [ µ = sup E M E[M F ]) ]. 8)
.4. Disance from sopping imes. We inroduce: ν = inf E[ T ] T where T runs over all F ) sopping imes. However, his quaniy may be infinie as may have infinie expecaion. A more adequae disance may be: [ ]) T ν = inf E T + T We noe ha his disance was precisely compued by du Toi-Peskir-Shiryaev in he example hey consider []. I would be nice o be able o esimae µ and/or ν, ν in erms of he funcion m ), bu we have no been able o obain any resul in his direcion. We shall now concenrae uniquely on he sudy of m ), ). 3. A sudy of several ineresing examples of funcions m ) 3.. Some general formulae. We shall compue m ), ) in some paricular cases where: = K = sup{ : M = K}, K, wih M =, M, a coninuous local maringale such ha M, we recall ha see, e.g. [, 8]): ) M Z = P K F ) = K hus m) = E[Z Z = K E [ M K M ) +] 9) 3.. The paricular case M = E = expb /), wih B ) a sandard Brownian moion, and K = sup{ : E = K}, K ). From formula 9), we deduce: m K ) = K E [ E K E ) +] [ = K E K exp B + )) ] + by Cameron-Marin) = { K KP exp B + ) ) < K E [ )<K) exp expb+ B + } K = e l ) = e l P B + ) < l e e l P B + 3 ) < l = P B < 3 ) e l e l) +e l P + l 3 + l < B < 3 + l ).
Paricularizing again, for M = E = expb /), and K =, hen m) = E [E E ) +] = P B < 3 ) e ) +P 3 ) < B <. ) Figure presens he graphs of m K ) for some K s.. K =., sup = K =.3, sup = K =.5, sup = K =.7, sup =.94 K =.9, sup = K =., sup = K =.4, sup = K =.6, sup = K =.8, sup = K =., sup = Figure. raphs of m K ), for K =.,.,... 4
Commens: I seems ha m K = sup m K )) increases wih K, a leas for K. Can his be proven? If so, i indicaes ha, as K varies, he K s are increasingly furher from sopping imes The case = Ta = sup{ < T a : B = }. From line 4 of Table α) of Progressive Enlargemens, p.3 of [8], we obain: Thus, we obain: Z = a B+ T a [ m ) = E a B+ T a ) a B+ Ta = a E[ <Ta) B>)B a B ) ] = a E[ S<a) B>)B a B ) ] = a E [ S < a ) B>)B a B = x ϕx), where: x = a and: ϕx) = E [ S<x) B>)B x B ) ] ) Now, i remains o compue he funcion ϕ. We noe ha ϕx) = E [ B + x B ) +] E [ S>x)B + x B ) +]. We shall ake advanage of he very useful formula: PS > x B = a) = exp xx a)), x a >. This formula is easily seen o be equivalen o he well-known expression of he join densiy of S,B ); see, e.g., [5], p.45.) Thus, we find: x ) ϕx) = dy yx y) exp y exp )) π x y) x 3 du u u) exp x u ) )) exp x π u) Thus: ϕx) x = x π du u u) exp x u ) )) exp x u) The case = L a = sup{u : R u = a}. From line 6ofTable α) ofprogressive Enlargemens, p.3 of [8], we obain: ) µ a Z =. R 5
Here, R u ) is BES d), d = µ+). For ha second example, we ge: [ ) ) µ ) µ a a m ) = E = E [ ) a = ϕ µ R R ) ) µ a a < R R law) z a R ) µ where using he fac ha R d = γ d/, we ge recall: = µ+): } ϕ µ z) = {z µ e z z µ du Γµ+) u µe u Figure. raphs of ϕ µz), for µ = /,,3/,5/,7/,9/,/,3/, and ha z / =.9,z =.6,z 3/ =.8,z 5/ =.5,z 7/ = 3.4,z 9/ = 4.3,z / = 5.,z 3/ = 6.. Figure presens he graphs of ϕ µ for µ = /,,3/,5/,7/,9/,/ and 3/. We also approximae z µ, he unique > real which achieves he max of ϕ µ. def This will give us he value m µ = m, for hese L a noe ha, for a given µ, he value does no depend on a; his is because of he scaling propery).
