1 THE COMPASS EXPERIMENT AND THE MEASUREMENT OF THE GLUON POLARISATION F. TESSAROTTO CERN (CH) and INFN-Trieste (I) arxiv:hep-ph/ v1 13 De 2001 COMPASS, a new fixed target experiment at CERN, aimed at the study of nuleon spin struture and hadron spetrosopy, has started to ollet physis data in Autumn This paper desribes the COMPASS apparatus and the measurement of the gluon polarisation G/G. The apparatus onsists in a solid state polarised target and a two stage spetrometer with high resolution traking, partile identifiation and alorimetry, apable of standing high event rates. COMPASS measures the longitudinal spin asymmetry of open harm prodution in polarised deep inelasti muon nuleon sattering: this asymmetry is diretly related to G sine at COMPASS energies open harm is essentially produed by photon gluon fusion only. A seond hannel, used to aess G with higher statistis, is the prodution of orrelated high p T hadron pairs. 1 Introdution A large experimental effort at CERN, SLAC and DESY during the last deade led to the olletion of high quality inlusive data on polarised deep inelasti sattering (DIS) and several NLO QCD analyses have extrated aurate quark heliity distributions. Despite of many attempts (inluding a omparison between high p T data and monte arlo simulations by HERMES 1 ) the gluon heliity distribution G is still substantially unonstrained but most indiations suggest positive large values. In the inoming years the effort to larify the nuleon spin puzzle will benefit from diret measurements of G by a new generation of experiments: COMPASS (NA48) at CERN SPS, STAR and PHENIX at BNL Polarised Proton Collider and E161 (Real Photon Experiment) at SLAC. 2 The COMPASS Collaboration In 1996 the two ommunities whih had presented the HMC and CHEOPS Letters of Intent for fixed target experiments at CERN merged in the COM- PASS (COmmon Muon and Proton Apparatus for Struture and Spetrosopy) Collaboration and presented a Proposal 2 whih obtained approval in Institutes partiipate in the Collaboration, for a total of almost 200 physiists. datong: submitted to World Sientifi on February 1,
2 COMPASS has a broad physis program with different beams and targets. It has a spin program with polarised muon beam: its main goal is to provide the first diret measurement of the gluon polarisation G/G; it will perform flavour deomposition of the quark heliity distributions; determine the transversity struture funtion h 1 ; measure polarised fragmentation funtions. Using hadroni beams it will study Primakoff reations to obtain π and K polarisabilities; perform extensive meson spetrosopy to investigate the presene of exoti states (glueballs or hybrids); ollet large samples of semileptoni deays of harmed mesons and baryons to measure the CKM matrix elements V s and V d, determine formfators and probe preditions from Heavy Quark Effetive Theory; perform a systemati study of harm hadroprodution ross setions; observe doubly harmed baryons for the first time. 3 The COMPASS Apparatus For the spin program COMPASS uses the µ + beam from the CERN SPS, with an energy between 100 and 200 GeV. Muons are produed by parity violating deay of π (and K) mesons and are naturally polarised: P B 80%. The beam intensity is µ + per spill, with 5 s long spills of 14.4 s period. Eah inoming muon is traked by sintillating fibres hodosopes and momentum analysed before the target. The target onsists in two ells (60 m long, 3 m diam.) filled with solid state NH 3 for proton and 6 LiD for deuteron measurements. The luminosity L m 2 s 1 (for 6 LiD). A 3 He - 4 He dilution refrigerator keeps the target at T < 100 m K, while a solenoid provides a 2.5 T magneti field along the beam axes; a dipole is used for the rotation of the polarisation. The COMPASS solenoid (600 mm diam.) is not yet available and this year the solenoid from the SMC experiment (255 mm diam.) was used. The two target ells are dynamially polarised and kept in opposite diretions, (either longitudinal or transverse); the polarisation of the nuleons is measured via 10 NMR oils with an auray of about 3%. In NH 3 protons an be polarised at P T 90%, and the dilution fator is f 0.17, while for 6 LiD, suessfully used in the 2001 run, P T 50% and f 0.5. To ahieve high resolution detetion and identifiation of partiles over a large angular and dynamial range the COMPASS spetrometer omprises two magneti stages: the first has an aeptane of ±180 mrad and a large aperture dipole magnet providing 1 Tm bending power; the seond, with 40 mrad aeptane and 5 Tm bending power is used to analyse high momentum partiles. Traking in the beam region is granted by a set of stations of sintillating datong: submitted to World Sientifi on February 1,
3 fibres hodosopes, with fibres diameters ranging from 0.5 mm in the entral region to 1 mm in the outer regions, read by multi-anode PMs: they provide 400 ps time resolution. The high flux area around the beam region is overed by miro-pattern detetors: Miromegas and GEMs. COMPASS Miromegas 3 ontain a thin miro-mesh foil separating an ionization volume from a high field (40 KV/m, 100 µm gap) amplifiation region; they have high effiieny and a spae resolution of 80µm. COMPASS GEMs (Gas Eletron Multiplier) 4 are made of kapton foils having Cu layers on both sides and a large (10 4 /m 2 ) number of 60µm diameter holes: a high field inside the holes, provides eletrons amplifiation. Triple GEM hambers are used with 31 31m 2 ative area and two-dimensional projetive readout with 100 µm resolution. A set of MWPCs with fast eletroni readout, planar drift hambers and drift hambers made of straw tubes layers with a size of m 2 are used for the large area traking. Both stages of the spetrometer are equipped with high resolution eletromagneti and hadron alorimeters, muon filters and hadron identifiation provided by a RICH detetor. The high momentum RICH is not yet available, while the large aeptane RICH, RICH1 is fully equipped, and onsists in a 3.3 m long vessel filled with a heavy fluoroarbon radiator gas (C 4 F 10 ), a large (5. m high, 6. m wide) wall of spherial mirrors whih fouses Cherenkov photons onto a set of UV photon detetors (MWPC s with quartz windows and CsI photo-onverting layers deposited on pb athodes segmented in 8 8mm 2 pads) with signal amplitude readout for a total of hannels. RICH1 should provide π K separation in the range between 3 GeV/ and 65 GeV/. Coinidenes between elements of hodosope planes at different positions along the beam selet sattered muons for triggering purpose. Parallel readout front-end eletronis with loal pre event building and pipelined aquisition system allow to stand trigger rates up to 100 khz with minimal dead-time with event sizes 30 kb. COMPASS uses fully objet oriented databases and software for storage and analysis of the 35 MB/s data flow (300 TB/year stored data) and has set-up a omputer farm of 200 PCs. 4 Measurement of G The gluon polarisation G/G will be aessed by measuring the asymmetry of two proesses: the open harm prodution and the orrelated high p T hadron paircharm prodution. prodution in DIS is dominated by the photon gluon fusion proess γ q. The sale of the proess is the photon-gluon entre of mass energy datong: submitted to World Sientifi on February 1,

The asymmetry of the PGF proess in the photoprodution limit ŝ whih is large (ŝ > 4m 2 ) even for very low Q 2, allowing to make use of the whole prodution ross setion, whih is both measured and alulable: for 100 GeV beam and energy transfers between 35 GeV and 85 GeV the COMPASS useful ross setions is 1.9 nb. The systematis from intrinsi harm and diffrative or resolved photon ontributions are small. The detetion of open harm hadrons in the final state of an event will be primarily done by identifying D 0 and D 0 mesons through their golden deay hannel: D 0 K π +, D 0 K + π. On average 1.2 neutral Ds are produed per open harm event; the branhing ration of this deay is 4%. In a mass window of m(d 0 ) ± 20 MeV the typial signal to bakground ratio expeted for COMPASS is 1:30. By imposing a ut on the K diretion in the D 0 rest frame: os(θk ) < 0.5 and on z D = E D /E γ < 0.25 the ratio beomes 1:4, with an effiieny of 30%. This orresponds to almost 1000 reonstruted D 0 /day. Further improvements will ome from other D 0 deay hannels and other open harm hannels, like D + K + π + π (B.R. = 9%) and in partiular from the D ± D 0 π ± deay whih is almost bakground free due to the small mass differene: m(d ) m(d 0 ) = 145 MeV. The measured asymmetry is: (N N )/(N + N ) = P B P T fda γ N where N (N ) is the number of events with target spin parallel (antiparallel) to the µ spin and D is the γ depolarisation (D 0.66). G(η) an be extrated from A γ N at an average value of the nuleon momentum fration arried by the gluon η=0.1 using: 2MEy σ(s) γg G(η,s)ds = A γ N 4m 2 2MEy σ(s) γg G(η, s)ds 4m 2 where the unpolarised terms an be taken from literature and σ(s) γg datong: submitted to World Sientifi on February 1,

The partoni asymmetry σ(ŝ)/σ(ŝ) is shown in fig. 2 in the photoprodution limit (Q 2 = 0). For one year of running COMPASS expets from the open harm asymmetry measurement a statistial error σ( G/G) Fig. 2 shows that the partoni asymmetry for light quark prodution in photon-gluon fusion is large too. In order to disriminate this proess from the leading order γ q q proess events with hadron pairs having orrelated high transverse momentum will be seleted: (p T > 1 GeV/ and Φ h1 Φ h2 = 180 o ±30 o where Φ h is angle between the lepton sattering plane and the plane ontaining the virtual photon and the hadron momenta). A more abundant prodution rate for these events is expeted in omparison with the open harm events, and their kinematis allows the reonstrution of η, probing G(η) in different η bins in the range 0.02 < η < 0.4. A onurrent proess whih ontributes for about 26% of the events is the QCD ompton sattering γ q qg. The seletion of K + K pairs will redue its ontribution and the omparison of equal and opposite sign pairs an help to estimate it, but the systemati errors will remain larger than in the open harm ase. The expeted statistial errors for one year of run for the two methodes are presented in fig. 3 together with three parametrisations of G/G from Gehrmann and Stirling 5 : a measurement with similar resolution will represent a major step toward a deeper understanding of the nuleon spin. datong: submitted to World Sientifi on February 1,
6 5 Conlusion COMPASS is a new fixed target experiment at CERN with a wide physis program on hadron struture and spetrosopy: it has an outstanding apparatus with high resolution traking, partile identifiation and alorimetry, apable of standing high event rates. It will ontribute to the large experimental effort to larify the spin struture of the nuleon by providing the first diret measurement of the gluon polarisation G/G with an auray of 10%. Referenes 1.
