1 Description of the RAQ related observations to be put in the GEMS dataflow system (WP_RAQ_3.1) Following the discussion of the GEMS 3rd assembly, where it was agreed that the 2003 EMEP network (ground station) data would be used for model evaluation (NRT and a posteriori for WP_RAQ_5). The 2003 data and its description was compiled from the EMEP measurement data online website ( maintained by the EMEP Chemical Coordinating Centre at NILU (EMEP CCC). Format of observation data The files with observation data are organized in two different ways: Acidifying and eutrophying compounds The format used for EMEP observations is a simple ascii format with data in columns. The data are organized with one file for each site covering the whole measurement period. All files have short header of three lines, stating the station code, measurement period, and column contents. The number of columns is not constant, but will depend on what have been measured at the site. All compounds have two columns; measurement values followed by flags ( The order of the compounds does not need to be the same. ' 999.9' is used to represent missing values. For non daily sampling the values have been assigned to the first day in the measurement period, while subsequent days in the same sample have been marked with 'nd'. Each data block starts with station code, year, instrument type and instrument name, followed by two lines with component name and matrix. The data follows in columns, starting with start time

2 and end time for each sample. ' ' is used to represent missing values. Please note that one file may contain several data blocks with a varying number of columns.
