ON CONSTANT-MULTIPLE-FREE SETS CONTAINED IN A RANDOM SET OF INTEGERS arxiv: v2 [math.nt] 26 Dec 2012 SANG JUNE LEE Astract. For a rational numer r > 1, a set A of ositive integers is called an r-multile-free set if A does not contain any solution of the equation rx y. The extremal rolem on estimating the maximum ossile size of r-multile-free sets contained in [n] : {1, 2,, n} has een studied for its own interest in cominatorial numer theory and for alication to coding theory. Let a, e ositive integers such that a < and the greatest common divisor of a and is 1. Wakeham and Wood showed that the maximum size of /a)-multile-free sets contained in +1 [n] is n + Olog n). In this note we generalize this result as follows. For a real numer 0, 1), let [n] e a set of integers otained y choosing each element i [n] randomly and indeendently with roaility. We show that the maximum ossile size of /a)-multile-free sets contained in [n] is n+o n log n log log n) with roaility that goes to 1 as n Introduction In recent years a trend in extremal cominatorics concerned with investigating how classical extremal results in dense environments transfer to sarse settings, and it has seen to e a fruitful suject of research. Esecially, in cominatorial numer theory, the following extremal rolem in a dense environment has een well-studied and successively extended to sarse settings: Fix an equation and estimate the maximum size of susets of [n] : {1, 2,, n} containing no non-trivial solutions of the given equation. An examle of this line of research is a version of Roth s theorem [10] on arithmetic rogressions of length 3 with resect to the equation x 1 + x 3 2x 2 ) for random susets of integers in Kohayakawa Luczak Rödl [8]. Also, Szemerédi s theorem [12] was transfered to random susets of integers in Conlon Gowers [2] and Schacht [11]. The result of Erdős Turán [4], Chowla [1], and Erdős [3] in 1940s on the maximum size of Sidon sets in [n] was extended in [6, 7] to sarse random susets of [n], where a Sidon Date: Tue 6 th May, 2014, 6:19am. 2 set is a set of ositive integers not containing any non-trivial solution of x 1 + x 2 y 1 + y 2. In this aer we transfer the following extremal results to sarse random susets. For a rational numer r > 1, a set A of ositive integers is called an r-multile-free set if A does not contain any solution of rx y. An interesting rolem on r-multile-free sets is of estimating the maximum ossile size f r n) of r-multile-free sets contained in [n] : {1, 2,, n}. This extremal rolem has een studied in [14, 9, 13] for its own interest in cominatorial numer theory, and also was alied to coding theory in [5]. Wang [14] showed that f 2 n) 2 3n + Olog n). Leung and Wei [9] roved that for every integer r > 1, f r n) r r+1n + Olog n). Wakeham and Wood [13] extended it to rational numers as follows. For ositive integers a and, let gcd, a) e the greatest common divisor of a and. Theorem 1 Wakeham and Wood [13]). Let a, e ositive integers with a < and gcd, a) 1. Then f /a n) n + O log n). + 1 We shall investigate the maximum size of constant-multile-free sets contained in a random suset of [n]. Let [n] e a random suset of [n] otained y choosing each element in [n] indeendently with roaility. Let f r [n] ) denote the maximum size of r-multile-free sets contained in [n]. We are interested in the ehavior of f r [n] ) for every rational numer r > 1. Theorem 1 gives the answer of the aove question for the case 1. On the other hand, if o1), then the usual deletion methods give that with high roaility that is, with roaility that goes to 1 as n ) the maximum size of /a)-multile-free sets contained in [n] is n1 o1)). Hence, from now on, we consider as a real numer with 0 < < 1. Using Chernoff ounds for examle, see Lemma 11), Theorem 1 easily imlies the following: Fact 2. Let 0, 1) and let a, e ositive integers such that a < and gcda, ) 1. Let ω e a function of n that goes to aritrarily slowly as n. With high roaility, there is a /a)-multile-free set in [n] of size + 1 n + ω n. Fact 2 gives a lower ound on f /a [n] ) that is off from the right value of f /a [n] ). The main result of this aer is the following: 2
Figure 1. The grah of y / + ) for 0 1 Theorem 3. Let 0, 1) and let a, e ositive integers such that a < and gcda, ) 1. Then, with high roaility, f /a [n] ) + n + O n log n log log n). The ratio f /a[n] ) n goes from 1 to +1 as varies from 0 to 1 See Figure 1). The roof of Theorem 3 is given in Sections 2 and 3 y using a grah theoretic method. 2. Proof of Theorem 3 In order to show Theorem 3, we use a grah theoretic aroach that was used in Wakeham and Wood [13]. Let r /a > 1 e a rational numer. Let D V, E) e the directed grah with the vertex set V [n] in which the set E of arcs or directed edges) is {x, y) : rx y}. Let D[[n] ] e the sugrah of D induced on [n]. Oserve that f r [n] ) is the same as the indeendence numer αd[[n] ]) of D[[n] ]. We consider structures of D[[n] ]. The indegree and outdegree of each vertex in D are at most 1. Also, there is no directed cycle in D ecause x, y) E imlies x < y. Therefore, each comonent of D or D[[n] ] is a directed ath. In order to otain an indeendent set of D[[n] ] of maximum size, we consider such an indeendent set comonentwise. Let C e a comonent of D[[n] ]. As we mentioned aove, C is a directed ath. Let V C) {u 0, u 1, u 2,, u i,, u l } e the vertex set of C such that u j < u j+1 and u j, u j+1 ) E for 0 j l 1. Oserve that V C) : {u 0, u 2, u 4, } 3
V C) forms an indeendent set of C of maximum size. Therefore, the set T : V C), C where C is each comonent of D[[n] ], forms an indeendent set of D[[n] ] of maximum size. Hence, we have the following. Lemma 4. f r [n] ) T. Thus, in order to show Theorem 3, it suffices to show the following. Lemma 5. Let 0, 1) and let a, e natural numers such that a < and gcda, ) 1. Then, with high roaility, T + n + O n log n log log n). The roof of Lemma 5 is given in Section Proof of Lemma 5 From now on, we show Lemma 5. For ositive integers and k, let k e an i-th suower of if k i l for some l 0 mod ). Let T i e the set of i-th suowers of in [n]. Let Ti T i denote the set of i-th suowers v of in [n] such that v is at an even distance from the smallest vertex of the comonent of D[[n] ] containing v. Oserve that T i T i, and hence, T i T i. 1) In Section 3.1, we estimate the exected value E T ). Section 3.2 deals with a concentration result of T with high roaility Exectation. We first estimate E Ti ) and their sum E T ). Recall that T i denotes the set of i-th suowers of in [n]. Note that since 1 i n, the range of i is 0 i log n. It is clear that T i { i x 1 x n } i, x 0 mod ). Hence we have the following: Fact 6. T i 1 n ± 1. 2) i We consider two cases searately, ased on the arity of i. Lemma 7. For 0 j log n)/2, we have E T 2j ) ) n 1 2j + ) 2j ) ± 1. 4
[ ] Proof. First we consider Pr v T 2j is in T2j. Let {v 0, v 1, v 2, }, where v i < v i+1, e the vertex set of the comonent of D containing v. Oserve that v i T i, and hence, v v 2j. The event that v T 2j is in T2j haens only when one of the following holds: There is some r with 0 r j 1 such that v 2j 1 2r [n] and v i [n] for all 2j 2r i 2j. The vertices v 0, v 1,, v 2j are in [n]. Hence, we have Pr [ v T 2j is in T 2j] 1 ) ) + + 2j 2 1 ) + 2j). 3) Thus we infer E T2j ) T 2j Pr [ v T 2j is in T2j ] ) 2),3) 1 n 2j ± 1 1 ) 1 ) 2j j ) ) n 2j + 2j 2j ± 1, which comletes the roof of Lemma 7. Lemma 8. For 1 j log n)/2, we have E T 2j 1 ) ) n 1 2j 1 ) 2j 1 ) ± 1. Proof. Using an argument similar to the roof of 3), one may otain that Pr [ v T 2j 1 is in T 2j 1] 1 ) ) + + 2j 2 1 ) ). 4) Thus we infer E T2j 1 ) T 2j 1 Pr [ v T 2j 1 is in T2j 1 ] 2),4) 1) n ) 2j ± 1 1 ) 1 2j ) ) 2j 1 + n 2j ± 1, which comletes the roof of Lemma 8. Lemmas 7 and 8 immediately imly the following. Corollary 9. For 0 i log n, we have E T i ) ) n 1 i + ) i ) ± 1. 5) 5
Summing over all i with 0 i log n, we have the following. Corollary 10. E T ) log n i0 E T i ) Proof. One may easily see that for x 2, log n i0 1 x i Corollary 9 yields that for 2 log n i0 E T j ) 5) 6) log n i ) n x x 1 + O [ ) n i + [ O n n + Olog n). + ) 1. 6) n ) ) ] i ± 1 ) + / / 1 + O )] 1 + Olog n) n n + Olog n), 7) + which comletes the roof of Corollary Concentration. Next we consider a concentration result of Ti. In other words, we show that Ti is around its exectation with high roaility. We will aly the following version of Chernoff ounds. Lemma 11 Chernoff ound). Let X i e indeendent random variales such that Pr[X i 1] i and Pr[X i 0] 1 i, and let X n i1 X i. Then for any λ 0, In articular, for 0 λ 1, Pr [X 1 + λ)ex)] e λ2 2+λ EX), 8) Pr [X 1 λ)ex)] e λ2 2 EX). 9) Pr [ X EX) λex)] 2e λ2 3 EX). 10) We first consider the case when 0 i 0.9 log n. Lemma 12. For 0 i 0.9 log n, we have T i E T i ) + O n log log n) 11) with roaility at least 1 2e 1 3 log log n)2. 6
Proof. Fix i. If k T i [n], then let { 1 with roaility X k 0 with roaility 1. where Pr [v T i is in Ti ]. Otherwise, let X k 0 with roaility 1. Let X n k1 X k. Oserve that as random variales. X T i 12) Note that for each k T i, the event that k Ti deends only on the events that v [n], where the vertices v are in the comonent of D containing k and v k. Hence, X k are indeendent for all k T i. Therefore we are ale to use Chernoff ounds Lemma 11) for a concentration result of X. log log n Set λ. Note that 0 λ 1 for 0 i 0.9 log n since EX) EX) Ω n ε ) i Ω n ε ) n 0.9 Ω ε n 0.1), where ε is a ositive constant such that ε 0 as 1. The inequality 10) yields that [ Pr X EX) ] E X) log log n 2e 1 3 log log n)2. 13) Corollary 9 yields that E X ) On), and hence, we infer that X E X) + O n log log n) with roaility at least 1 2e 1 3 log log n)2. This together with 12) comletes the roof of Lemma 12. Next we consider the remaining case when 0.9 log n i log n. Lemma 13. For 0.9 log n i log n, we have T i O n) 0.1), with roaility at least 1 e log log n)2. Proof. We define a random variale X as in 12), that is, X Ti. Set 2log log n)2 λ. The inequality 8) yields that EX) and hence, In other words, Pr [X 1 + λ)ex)] e λ 2 EX) e log log n)2, Pr [ X EX) + 2log log n) 2] e log log n)2. 14) with roaility at least 1 e log log n)2. X EX) + 2log log n) 2 15) 7
Corollary 9 gives that EX) O n 1 ) i O n 0.1) O n) 0.1), 16) where the second inequality holds for i 0.9 log n. Thus, comining 15) and 16) comletes the roof of Lemma 13. Now we are ready to show Lemma 5. Proof of Lemma 5. We have that T log n i1 Lemmas 12 and 13 give that T with roaility at least 0.9 log n Ti log n i1 i1 T i + log n i 0.9 log n +1 E T i ) + O n log n log log n), T i. 1 log n) 2e 1 3 log log n)2 1 2e log log n 1 3 log log n)2 1 o1). 17) This together with Corollary 10 imlies that with high roaility T which comletes the roof of Lemma 5. + n + O n log n log log n), Acknowledgement.
