Box 603, Beng , Chna (Dated: October 23, 2018) arxv: v3 [cond-mat.str-e] 15 Oct 2009 We propose a second renormazaton group method to hande the tensor-networ states or modes. Ths method reduces dramatcay the truncaton error of the tensor renormazaton group. It aows physca quanttes of cassca tensor-networ modes or tensor-networ ground states of quantum systems to be accuratey and effcenty determned. One of the bggest chaenges n physcs s to deveop accurate and effcent methods that can sove many currenty ntractabe probems n correated quantum or statstca systems. Whe the densty matrx renormazaton group (DMRG) has proven to be a powerfu numerca too for the study of strongy correated systems n one dmenson, appcatons to two or hgher dmensons are hampered by accuracy. Quantum Monte Caro smuatons, on the other hand, are not mted by the dmensonaty, but are hamstrung by the mnus sgn probem for fermonc or frustrated spn systems. To resove these dffcutes, ncreasng nterest has recenty been devoted to the study of the tensor-networ states or modes[1, 2, 3, 4, 5]. In statstca physcs, a cassca attce modes wth oca nteractons, such as the Isng mode, can be wrtten as tensor-networ modes. To nvestgate these tensornetwor modes, Levn and Nave proposed a tensor renormazaton group () method[3]. They showed that the magnetzaton obtaned wth ths method for the Isng mode on tranguar attce agrees accuratey wth the exact resut. In a quantum system, a tensor-networ state[1, 2] presents a hgher-dmensona extenson of the onedmensona matrx-product state[6] n the study of DMRG[7]. It captures accuratey the nature of shortrange entangement of a quantum system and s beeved to be a good approxmaton of the ground state. In a recent wor, we have deveoped a proecton method to determne accuratey and systematcay the tensor-networ ground state wavefuncton for an nteractng quantum Hamtonan[4]. In the evauaton of ts expectaton vaues, we adopted the method of Levn and Nave[3]. From the cacuaton, we found that the can ndeed produce quatatvey correct resuts. However, the truncaton error n the teraton grows rapdy wth the bond dmenson of oca tensors (D). Ths eads to a bg error n the cacuaton of expectaton vaues. In partcuar, the ground state energy and other physca quanttes oscate strongy wth ncreasng D, ndcatng that the truncaton error of the s too bg to produce a convergng resut n the arge D mt. In ths Letter, we propose a nove renormazaton group scheme to sove the above probem. In the FIG. 1: Schematc representaton of the partton functon of a cassca system defned by Eq. (1) and (b) the tensornetwor ground state wavefuncton of a quantum system defned by Eq. (14) on honeycomb attces. At each vertex, three bonds are emtted aong x, y, and z-drectons, respectvey. method of Levn and Nave, the snguar-vaue spectra of an M-matrx defned by a product of two neghborng oca tensors s renormazed n the truncaton of bass space. Ths can be thought as the frst renormazaton to the tensor-networ state. However, ths renormazaton does not consder the nfuence of other tensors (denoted as the envronment hereafter) to the M-matrx. It presents a oca rather than goba optmzaton of the truncaton space. The roe of envronment s to modfy the truncaton space by reweghng the snguar-vaue spectra of M. We w ntroduce a systematca method to study ths renormazaton effect of envronment. Ths method, as w be demonstrated beow, mproves sgnfcanty the accuracy of resuts. We w ca t the second renormazaton group method of tensor-networ states, abbrevated as. To understand how our method wors, et us frst consder how the tensor-networ state s renormazed n the [3]. We start wth a cassca tensor-networ mode on honeycomb attces whose partton functon s defned by Z = Tr Tx a y z Tx b y z, (1) b, w where b/w stands for the bac/whte subattce shown n Fg 1. T a x y z and T b x y z are the two tensors of ran three defned on the bac and whte subattces, respec-

The subscrpts x, y, and z are the nteger bond ndces of dmenson D defned on the three bonds emtted from ste aong the x, y, and z drectons, respectvey. A bond ns two stes. The two bond ndces defned from the two end ponts tae the same vaues. The starts by rewrng a par of tensors wth snguar vaue decomposton as shown n Fg. 2. To do ths, et us contract a par of neghborng tensors to form a N N matrx M defned by M, = m T a m Tb m, (2) wheren = D 2. Thesnguarvauedecompostons then apped to decoupe ths matrx nto the foowng form M, = N U,m Λ m V,m, (3) m=1 where U and V are two N N untary matrces. Λ = (Λ 1,,Λ N ) s a sem-postve dagona matrx arranged n descendng order, Λ 1 Λ 2 Λ N. The next step s to truncate the bass space and retan D cut ( N)argestsnguarvaues andthe correspondng vectors. M s then repaced by an approxmate expresson M, D cut m=1 U,m Λ m V,m. (4) The correspondng truncaton error s defned by m>d ε(λ) = cut Λ m TrΛ (5) Eq. (4) mnmzes the truncaton error of M. However, t does not consder the nfuence of the rest of attce (.e. envronment) to M. In rea systems, what needs to be mnmzed s acturay the truncaton error of the partton functon Z. Ths means that the truncaton error s ony ocay mnmzed by the [3]. For the spn-1/2 Isng mode wth D = 2, the truncaton error s generay very sma except n the vcnty of the crtca pont. However, f the bond degrees of freedom D becomes arge, the truncaton error ncreases dramatcay. Ths may cause a bg error n the fna resut. ( b) FIG. 3: Confguraton of an envronment attce and that after one teraton (b). To understand ths more ceary, et us rewrte the partton functon (1) as Z = TrMM e =,M, M e,, (6) where M e s the contrbuton from the envronment attce defned n Fg. 3. M e s defned by tracng out a bond ndces n the envronment attce excudng those connectng wth the two vertces on whch M s defned. Ths formua ndcates that to reduce the error n Z, one needs to mnmze the truncaton error of MM e, rather than that of M. Fg. 3 shows the confguraton of an envronment attce. In the rewrng and truncaton of M-matrx, there s no need to evauate M e rgourousy. We propose to evauate M e teratvey usng the method. The confguraton of the envronment after one teraton before decmaton s shown n Fg. 3(b). By contractng a the nterna bonds connectng sma tranges, a decmated envronment attce, whose confguraton s smar to Fg. 3, s obtaned. Ths teraton can be repeated unt M e s converged. Generay we fnd that the vaues of M e such obtaned are suffcenty accurate after 5 to 10 teratons, the correspondng numbers of envronment attce stes are and , respectvey. In the mnmzaton of the truncaton error of MM e, t s better to treat the row and coumn ndces of M as symmetrcay as possbe. To do ths, et us frst

[8]. The dotted ne n the Inset s the exact crtca temperatures T c = 4/n3 do a snguar vaue decomposton for M e T 6 4 M e = U e Λ e V e, (7) where U e and V e are two untary matrces and Λ e s a sem-postve dagona matrx. Then we can defne a new matrx and show that M = Λ 1/2 e V e MU e Λ 1/2 e, (8) Z = Tr M. (9) Thus to mnmze the error n Z, one needs ony to mnmze the truncaton error of M. Now et us tae a snguar vaue decomposton for M M = Ũ ΛṼ. (10) Agan, Ũ and Ṽ are two untary matrces. Λ s a sempostve dagona matrx whose dagona matrx eements are arranged n descendng order. Then we can truncate the bass space by eepng the D cut argest snguar vaues of Λ. By substtutng the approxmate M bac nto Eq. (8), one can fnd that where M, D cut n=1 S a n, Sb n,, (11) S a = Λ 1/2 Ũ Λe 1/2 V e, (12) S b = Λ 1/2 Ṽ Λe 1/2 U e (13) are the two tensors defned n the rewred attce. Fnay one can foow the steps ntroduced n Ref. [3] to update tensors T a and T b n a squeezed attce by tang the coarse gran decmaton of S a and S b. Ths competes a fu cyce of teraton. By repeatng ths procedure, one can fnay obtan the vaue of partton functon n the thermodynamc mt. Wehaveappedthsmethodtothespn-1/2Isng mode on tranguar attces. Fg. 4 compares the reatve error of the free energy and the specfc heat obtaned usng the wth those usng the. The number of stes s 3 30 and D cut = 24. In the cacuaton of M e, 10 teratons are used. For the free energy, we fnd that the can mprove the accuracy for more than fve orders of magntude far away from the crtca pont, and more than two orders of magntude at the crtca pont. The crtca temperature T c can be determned from the pea poston of the specfc heat. As shown n the Inset of Fg. 4, the vaue of T c obtaned wth s more than two orders of magntude more accurate than that obtaned wth. Furthermore, from our cacuaton, we fnd that the mprovement of the over the becomes more and more pronounced wth ncreasng D cut. It s straghtforward to extend the to study ground state propertes of a quantum system wth tensornetwor wavefuncton. The two-dmensona tensornetwor wave functon can be accuratey determned usng the proecton approach we recenty proposed[4]. After that one can use the to evauate the expectaton vaues of the tensor-networ state[9]. To demonstrate how the can mprove the accuracy of the expectaton vaues of tensor-networ states, we have apped the to the Hesenberg mode on honeycomb attces. The ground state wavefuncton s assumed to have the foowng tensor-networ form Ψ = Tr λ x λ y λ z A xy z [σ ]B xy z [σ ] b, w σ σ. (14) A schematc representaton of ths tensor-networ state on the honeycomb attce s shown n Fg. 1(b). σ s the egenvaue of spn operator S z. A xy z [σ ] and

B xy z [σ ] are the two three-ndexed tensors defned on the bac and whte subattces, respectvey. λ α (α = x,y,z) s a postve dagona matrx of dmenson D. The trace s to sum over a spn confguratons and over a bond ndces. The tensor correspondng to T a n Eq. (1) s now defned by T a xx,yy,zz = σ (λ x λ y λ z ) 1/2 A xyz [σ] A x y z [σ](λ x λ y λ z )1/2. The bond dmenson of ths tensor s D 2. Fg. 5 compares the wth the resuts for the ground state energy and the staggered magnetzaton for the Hesenberg mode on the honeycomb attce. The number of attce stes s The truncaton error n the cacuaton s ess than ε and D cut = D 2. We have used the second order Trotter- Suzu decomposton formua to mprove the accuracy n the cacuaton of the ground state wavefunctons usng the proecton approach ntroduced n Ref. [4]. The staggered magnetzaton s evauated drecty from the expectaton vaue of the staggered spn operator n the ground state n the mt the externa staggered magnetc fed approachng zero. Ths avods the error n the determnaton of the staggered magnetzaton from the numerca dervatve of the ground state energy at fnte staggered magnetc fed, as was done n Ref. [4]. Une the resuts, we fnd that the resuts vary monotoncay wth D and tend to converge qucy to the nfnte D mt. For D = 8, the resuts of the ground energy and the staggered magnetzaton per ste are respectvey and , consstent wth the resuts obtaned by other methods[10, 11, 12]. The accuracy of these resuts are st not comparabe wth those obtaned by the DMRG[13] and the quantum Monte Caro method[14]. By consderng the symmetry of the Hamtonan, the tensor-networ states wth a bond dmenson as arge as D 20 can n prncpe be handed. In that case, the resuts w be further mproved. In concuson, we have ntroduced a method to mprove sgnfcanty the accuracy n the cacuaton. Ths method dffers from the by tang nto account the renormazaton effect of envronment to the M-matrx, smar as the DMRG contrastng the conventona boc renormazaton group method. For the cassca Isng mode, the reatve error of the free energy aswe as otherquanttes s reduced by more than twoto fve orders of magntude when D cut = 24 and can be further reduced by ncreasng D cut, n comparson wth the. The, n combned wth the proecton method ntroduced n Ref. [4], provdes an accurate and effcent too for exporng tensor-networ ground states of quantum attce modes. It w pay a more and more mportant roe n the study of hghy correated systems. The physca dea present n ths wor can be aso generazed to appy to other physca probems where the system can be dvded nto two parts and the nterpay between them s mportant. In partcuar, f one wants to generaze the proecton method proposed n Ref. [4] to evauate tmedependent or thermodynamc quanttes, then the correcton to the wavefuncton shoud be consdered to mnmze the accumuated Trotter and truncaton errors n the teraton.
