1 COMBINATORIAL IDENTITIES FOR GENERALIZED STIRLING NUMBERS EXPANDING -FACTORIAL FUNCTIONS AND THE -HARMONIC NUMBERS MAXIE D. SCHMIDT arxiv: v2 [math.co 29 Mar 207 SCHOOL OF MATHEMATICS GEORGIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY 7 SKILES BUILDING 686 CHERRY STREET NW ATLANTA, GA MAXIEDS@GMAIL.COM Abstract. We introduce a class o -actorials, or -Pochhammer symbols, that includes many, i not most, well-nown actorial and multiple actorial unction variants as special cases. We consider the combinatorial properties o the corresponding generalized classes o Stirling numbers o the irst ind which arise as the coeicients o the symbolic polynomial expansions o these -actorial unctions. The combinatorial properties o these more general parameterized Stirling number triangles we prove within the article include analogs to nown expansions o the ordinary Stirling numbers by p-order harmonic number sequences through the deinition o a corresponding class o p-order -harmonic numbers... Generalized -actorial unctions.. Introduction Deinitions. For any unction, : N C, and ixed non-zero indeterminates x,t C, we introduce and deine the generalized -actorial unction, or alternately the -Pochhammer symbol, denoted by (x,n, as the ollowing products: (x,n n ( x ( t. ( Within this article, we are interested in the combinatorial properties o the coeicients o the powers o x in the last product expansions which we consider to be generalized orms o the Stirling numbers o the irst ind in this setting. Section.2 deines generalized Stirling numbers o both the irst and second inds and motivates the deinitions o auxiliary triangles by special classes o ormal power series generating unction transormations and their corresponding negative-order variants considered in the reerences [7, 6. Special cases. Key to the ormulation o applications and interpreting the generalized results in this article is the observation that the deinition o ( provides an eective generalization o almost all other related actorial unction variants considered in the reerences when t. The special cases o (n : αn β or some integer-valued α and 0 β < α lead to the motivations or studying these more general actorial unctions in [6, and orm the expansions o multiple α-actorial unctions, n! SCHMIDT n and increment h, denoted by t (n,h, or the Pochhammer -symbol denoted by (x n,h p n (h,t t(th(t2h (t(n h, studied in [3, 4, 2 orm particular special cases, as do the the orms o the generalized Roman actorials and Knuth actorials or n deined in [8, and the q-shited actorial unctions considered in [9, 3. When ((n,t (q n, these products are related to the expansions o the inite cases o the q-pochhammer symbol products, (a;q n ( a( aq ( aq n, and the corresponding deinitions o the generalized Stirling number triangles deined in (2 o the next subsection are precisely the Gaussian polynomials, or q-binomial coeicients, studied in relation to the q-series expansions and q-hypergeometric unctions in [0, 7. New results proved in the article. The results proved within this article, or example, provide new expansions o these special actorial unctions in terms o their corresponding p-order -harmonic number sequences, F n (p (t : t ( p, n which generalize nown expansions o Stirling numbers by the ordinary p-order harmonic numbers, H n (p n r, in [, 3, 7, 6. Still other combinatorial sums and properties satisied by the symbolic polynomial expansions o these special case actorial unctions ollow as corollaries o the new results we prove in the next sections. The next subsection precisely expands the generalized actorial expansions o ( through the generalized class o Stirling numbers o the irst ind deined recursively by (2 below..2. Deinitions o generalized -actorial Stirling numbers. We irst employ the next recurrence relation to deine the generalized triangle o Stirling numbers o the irst ind, which we denote by [ n : [x (x,n, or just by [ n when the context is clear, or natural numbers n, 0 [3, c. 3.. [ [ [ n n n (n t n [n 0 δ (2 We also deine the corresponding generalized orms o the Stirling numbers o the second ind, denoted by { n}, so that we can consider inversion relations and combinatorial analogs to nown identities or the ordinary triangles by the sum { } n j0 ( ( j (j n j t jn, j! rom which we can prove the ollowing orm o a particularly useul generating unction transormation motivated in the reerences when (n has a Taylor series expansion in integral powers o n about zero [3, c. 3.3 [5, c. 7.4 [5, 6: (j t j zj { } [ z z j D z (j n. 3 COMBINATORIAL IDENTITIES FOR GENERALIZED STIRLING NUMBERS 3 which then implies that the transormed ordinary and exponential zeta-lie power series enumerating generalized polylogarithm unctions and the -harmonic numbers, F n (p (t, are expanded by the ollowing two series variants [6: z n (n { } zj j! j n j 0 ( z j F n (r (z n { } zj ez (j z. n! j n j 0 (j We ocus on the combinatorial relations and sums involving the generalized positive-order Stirling numbers in the next ew sections. 2. Generating unctions and expansions by -harmonic numbers 2.. Motivation rom a technique o Euler. We are motivated by Euler s original technique or solving the Basel problem o summing the series, ζ(2 n n 2, and later more generally all even-indexed integer zeta constants, ζ(2, in closed-orm by considering partial products o the sine unction [6, pp In particular, we observe that we have both an ininite product and a corresponding Taylor series expansion in z or sin(z given by sin(z n 0 ( n z 2n (2n! z j ( z2 j 2 π 2 Then i we combine the orm o the coeicients o z 3 in the partial product expansions at each inite n Z with the nown trigonometric series terms deined such that [z 3 sin(z 3! given on each respective side o the last equation, we see inductively that H (2 n π 2 [z 2 j n ( z2 j 2 π 2. ζ(2 π2 6. In our case, we wish to similarly enumerate the p-order -harmonic numbers, F (p n (t, through the generalized product expansions deined in ( Generating the integer order -harmonic numbers. We irst deine a shorthand notation or another orm o generalized -actorials that we will need in expanding the next products as ollows: n! : n (j and n! : j n j (j t j n! t n(n/2. I we let ζ p exp(2πı/p denote the primitive p th root o unity or integers p, and deine the coeicient generating unction, n (w n (t;w, by n (w : n w ( w (jt j n [ w, 2 j we can actor the partial products in ( to generate the p-order -harmonic numbers in the ollowing orms: ( n t p ( p tpn(n/2 p n [ n (n! p [w 2p ( p ζp m( w (4 m0 0 tpn(n/2 p (n! p [w 2p ( j w j [ p n j n (w p j p j j0

Then the ollowing expansions illustrate several characteristic orms o these prescribed partial sums or the irst several special cases o (4 when 2 p 5: n t 2 ( 2 tn(n ( Fn (n! 2 (2 2 2 F n ( F n (3 (6 n n n t 3 ( 3 t3n(n/2 (n! 3 ( Fn (2 3 3 F n ( F n (2 F n (33 F n ( 2 Fn (4 t 4 ( 4 t4n(n (n! 4 ( Fn (2 4 4 F n ( F n (2 2 Fn (32 F n ( 2 Fn (3 2 4 F n ( 2 Fn (2 F n (4 4 F n ( 3 Fn (5 t 5 ( 5 t5n(n/2 (n! 5 ( Fn (2 5 5 F n ( F n (2 3 Fn (35 F n ( 2 Fn (2 F n (3 2 5 F n ( 2 Fn (2 2 Fn (4 5 F n ( 3 Fn (3 F n (4 5 F n ( 3 Fn (2 F n (55 F n ( 4 Fn (6. For each ixed integer p >, the particular partial sums deined by the ordinary generating unction, n (w, correspond to a unction in n that is ixed with respect to the lower indices or the triangular coeicients deined by (2. Moreover, the resulting coeicient expansions enumerating the -harmonic numbers at each p 2 are isobaric in the sense that the sum o the indices over the lower index is 2p in each individual term in these inite sums Expansions o the generalized coeicients by -harmonic numbers. The elementary symmetric polynomials depending on the unction implicit to the product-based deinitions o the generalized Stirling numbers o the irst ind expanded through ( provide new orms o the nown p-order harmonic number, or exponential Bell polynomial, expansions o the ordinary Stirling numbers o the irst ind enumerated in the reerences [,, 4, 2. Thus, i we irst deine the weighted sums o the -harmonic numbers, denoted w (n,m, recursively according to an identity or the Bell polynomials, l Y n,l (x,x 2,..., orx ( F n ( (t (! as [2, 4..8 w (n,m : ( F n ( (t ( m w (n,m [m δ, 0 <m we can expand the generalized coeicient triangles through these weighted sums as n! These expansions are computed explicitly using the recursive ormula in (7 or the irst ew cases o the lower triangle index 2 5. We will return to the expansions o these coeicients in (7 to ormulate new inite sum identities providing unctional relations between the p-order -harmonic number sequences in the next section Combinatorial sums and unctional equations or the -harmonic numbers. The next several properties give interesting expansions o the p-order -harmonic numbers recursively over the parameter p that can then be employed to remove, or at least signiicantly obuscate, the current direct cancellation problem with these orms phrased by the examples in (6 and in (8. Proposition 2.3. For any ixed p and n 0, we have the ollowing coeicient product identities generating the p-order -harmonic numbers, F n (p (t: F n (p (t F n (p (t ( p t n(n/2 (9 t pn(n p2 2(p n! 6 6 MAXIE D. SCHMIDT The coeicients involved in the partial sum orms or each sequence of n (p (t are implicitly tied to the orm ot t /p in the triangle deinition o (2. Given this distinction, let the generating unction be deined equivalently in the more careul deinition as n (w : n (t; w. The powers o the generating unction n (w rom the previous equations satisy the coeicient term expansions according to the next equation [5, c ( p j n [w 2p j n (w p j : [w 2p j n (t; w p j [w j (t; w 0 i,...,i p j j i i p j j i 2 w 2 [ n i p j 2 Then by taing the dierence o the harmonic sequence terms over successive indices p and at a ixed index o n, the stated recurrences or these p-order sequences result. The generating unction series over n in the next proposition is related to the orms o the Euler sums considered in [ and to the context o the generalized zeta unction transormations considered in [6 briely noted in the introduction. We suggest the ininite sums over these generalized identities or n as a topic or uture research exploration in the concluding remars o Section 4. Proposition 2.4 (Functional Equations or the -Harmonic Numbers. For any integers n 0 and p 2, we have the ollowing unctional relations between the p-order and (p -order -harmonic numbers over n and p: F (p n (tp F n (p (t p [ n2 ( p j t j(n ( p p j j<p (n j (n! p (n! First, notice that (7 implies that we have the ollowing weighted harmonic number sums or the p-order -harmonic numbers: F n (p (tp ( p j F n (j (t j [ n p( p. p j n! p n! Next, we use (2 twice to expand the dierences o the let-hand-side o the previous equation as t p(n (n p F(p n (tp F n (p (t p [ n2 j<p p j [ n2 p ( p j F (j n (tj [ n (n! p j j<p p( p t n p (n! The second identity is veriied similarly by combining the coeicient terms as in the last equations and adding the right-hand-side dierences o the (p -order -harmonic numbers to the irst identity. One immediate corollary that must by its importance be expanded in turn explicitly in the next example provides new expansions o the p-order harmonic numbers in terms o the ordinary triangle o Stirling numbers o the irst ind corresponding to the case where ((n,t (n, in the previous proposition. Similar expansions o identities related to the generalized generating unction transormations in [6 result or the special cases o the proposition where ((n,t (αnβ,t or some application-dependent prescribed α,β C deined such that β α / Z. Another special case worth noting and independently expanding provides analogous relations between the q-binomial coeicients implicit to the orms o the q-binomial theorem expanding the q-pochhammer symbols, (a;q n, or each n 0 [0, c Example 2.5 (Stirling Numbers and Euler Sums. For all integers p 3 and ixed n Z, we have the ollowing identity relating the successive dierences o the p-order harmonic numbers and the Stirling numbers o the irst ind: n p ([ [ [ ( p n n n ( p (0 np n! p p p n n! p 3 j0 [ n j 2 ( j (n n p j. n! The relation in (0 certainly implies new inite sum identities between the p-order harmonic numbers and the Stirling numbers o the irst ind, though the generating unctions and limiting cases o these sums provide more inormation on ininite sums considered in several o the reerences. With this in mind, we deine the Nielsen generalized polylogarithm, S t, (z, by the ininite generating series over the t-power-scaled Stirling numbers as [, c. 5 S t, (z : n [ n z n n t n!. We see immediately that (0 provides strictly enumerative relations between the polylogarithm unction generating unctions, Li p (z/( z, or the p-order harmonic numbers and the Nielsen polylogarithms. Perhaps more interestingly, we also ind new identities between the Riemann zeta unctions, ζ(p and ζ(p, and the special classes o Euler sums given by S t, ( or t [2,p and [2,p deined as in the reerence [, Coeicient identities and generalized orms o the Stirling convolution polynomials 3.. The next identities in ( are given or general lower column index by [ n n [w (w (j t j [n δ [n 0 δ ( j (i (i n t (i i n, 0<i < <i n <n which ollows immediately by considering the irst products o the orm i (z x i in the context o elementary symmetric polynomials or these speciic x i. Proposition 3. (Horizontal and Vertical Column Recurrences. The generalized Stirling numbers o the irst ind over the irst several special case columns or the shited upper index o n in the expansions o (2 are given by the next recurrence relations or all n 0 and any 2. n! t n(n/2 (2 n! t n(n/2 n j [ j t j(j/2 j!, i 2 Proo. We begin by observing that by (2 when, we have that (n [ [ n n t n 0 (n [ n t n [n 0 δ, which implies the irst claim by induction since [ and [ 0. To prove the column-wise recurrence relation given in (2, we notice again by induction that or any unctions g(n and b(n 0, the sequence, (n, deined recursively by { b(n (n g(n i n (n i n 0, has a closed-orm solution given by n (n b(j Thus by (2 the second claim is true. j 0 j<n g(j j i b(j Generalized orms o the Stirling convolution polynomials. Deinition 3.2 (Stirling Polynomial Analogs. For x,n,x n, we suggest the next two variants o the generalized Stirling convolution polynomials, denoted by σ,n (x and σ,n (x, respectively, as the right-hand-side coeicient deinitions in the ollowing equations: [ [ x (x n! n σ,n (x : (n! σ x n x! For integers x,n,x n, the analogs to the Stirling convolution polynomial sequences deined by (3 each satisy a respective recurrence relation stated in the next equations. (xσ,n (x (x nσ,n (x(x t x σ,n (x[n 0 δ (x σ,n (x (x n σ,n (x(x t x σ,n (x[n 0 δ (4 Proo. We give a proo o the second identity since the irst recurrence ollows almost immediately rom this result. Let x,n,x n and consider the expansion o the let-hand-side o (4 according to Deinition 3.2 as ollows: [ x (x n! (x σ,n (x x n [ ((xt x x! x x n (x n σ,n (x(xt x σ,n (x. For any non-negative integer x, when n 0, we see that [ x x result. [ x (x n (x n! x n x!, which implies the Remar 3.4 (A Comparison o Polynomial Generating Functions. The generating unctions or the Stirling convolution polynomials, σ n (x, and the α-actorial polynomials, σ n (α (x, rom [3 each have the comparatively simple special case closed-orm generating unctions given by [ ( x (x n! ze xσ n (x [z n z x x n (x! e z or ((n,t (n, (5 [ ( x xσ n (α (x n! αze (x [z n e ( αz αz x x n α (x! e αz or ((n,t (αn α, [ ( x xσ n (α;β (x n! αze (x [z n e βz αz x x n (x! e αz or ((n,t (αnβ,. (α;β The Stirling polynomial sequence in (5 is a special case o a more general class o convolution polynomial sequences deined by Knuth in his article [7. These polynomial sequences are deined by a general sequence o coeicients, s n with s 0, such that the corresponding polynomials, s n (x, are enumerated by the power series over the original sequence as ( x s n (xz n : S(z x s nz n. n0 Polynomial sequences o this orm satisy a number o interesting properties, and in particular, the next identity provides a generating unction or a variant o the original convolution polynomial sequence over n when t C is ixed. n S t (z : S ( zs t (z t xs n(xtn (xtn [z n S t (z x (6 This result is also useul in expanding many identities or the t : case as given or the Stirling polynomial case in [5, 6.2 [7. A related generalized class o polynomial sequences is considered in Roman s boo deining the orm o Sheer polynomial sequences. The polynomial sequences o this particular type, say with sequence terms given by s n (x, satisy the orm in the ollowing generating unction identity where A(z and B(z are prescribed power series satisying the initial conditions rom the reerence [2, c. 2.3: s n (x zn n! : A(zexB(z. n0
10 0 MAXIE D. SCHMIDT For example, the orm o the generalized, or higher-order Bernoulli polynomials (numbers is a parameterized sequence whose generating unction yields the orm o many other special case sequences, including the Stirling polynomial case deined in equation (5 [2, c [3, c. 5. An experimental procedure towards evaluating the generalized polynomials. We expect that the generalized convolution polynomial analogs deined in (3 above orm a sequence o initedegree polynomials in x, or example, as in the Stirling polynomial case when we have that [ x x n 0 n ( x 2n where n denotes the special triangle o second-order Eulerian numbers or n, 0 and where the binomial coeicient terms in the previous equations each have a inite-degree polynomial expansion in x [5, 6.2. The previous identity also allows us to extend the Stirling numbers o the irst ind to arbitrary real, or complex-valued inputs. Given the relatively simple and elegant orms o the generating unctions that enumerate the polynomial sequences o the special case orms in (5, it seems natural to attempt to extend these relations to the generalized polynomial sequence orms deined by (3. However, in this more general context we appear to have a stronger dependence o the orm and ordinary generating unctions o these polynomial sequences on the underlying unction. Speciically, or the orm o the irst sequence in (3, we suppose that the unction (n is arbitrary. Based on the irst several cases o these polynomials, it appears that the generating unction or the sequence can be expanded as n (x : [z n F(z x where F(z : g n (xz n (7 g n (x n0 n j0 (xn num n (j; xx n j (x j (x j n! t nx 2n j0 denom n(j; xx 2n j (x j (x j [n δ [n 0 δ where the orms num n (j; x and denom n (j; x denote polynomial sequences o inite non negative integral degree indexed over the natural numbers n, j 0. Similarly it has been veriied or the irst 6 o each n and that the ollowing equation holds where the terms g n (x involved in the series or F(z are deined through the orm o the last equation. n s n ( : n (n s n ( [z n z F(z n j ( n j, [z n (F(z j [n δ Note that the coeicients deined through these implicit power series orms must also satisy an implicit relation to the particular values o the polynomial parameter x as ormed through the last equations, which is much dierent in construction than in the cases o the special polynomial sequence generating unctions remared on above. Other dierent expansions may result or special cases o the unction (n and explicit values o the parameter t. 4. Conclusions and uture research 4.. Summary. We have deined a generalized class o actorial product unctions, (x,n, that generalizes the orms o many special and symbolic actorial unctions considered in the reerences. The coeicient-wise symbolic polynomial expansions o these -actorial unction variants deine generalized triangles o Stirling numbers o the irst ind which share many analogs to the combinatorial properties satisied by the ordinary combinatorial triangle cases. Surprisingly, many inversion relations and other inite sum properties relating the ordinary Stirling number triangles are not apparent by inspection o these corresponding sums in the most general cases. A study o ordinary Stirling-number-lie sums, inversion relations, and generating unction transormations is not contained in the article. We pose ormulating these
11 COMBINATORIAL IDENTITIES FOR GENERALIZED STIRLING NUMBERS analogs in the most general coeicient cases as a topic or uture combinatorial wor with the generalized Stirling number triangles deined in Section Topics suggested or uture research. Another new avenue to explore with these sums and the generalized -zeta series transormations motivated in [7, 6 is to consider inding new identities and expressions or the Euler-lie sums suggested by the generalized identity in Proposition 2.4 and by the special case expansions or the Stirling numbers o the irst ind given in Example 2.5. In particular, i we deine a class o so-termed -zeta unctions, ζ (s : n (n s, we see analogs to these ininite Euler sum variants expanded through ζ (s just as the Euler sums are expressed through sums and products o the Riemann zeta unction, ζ(s, in the ordinary cases rom [.
