23 How to create an international research center of excellence In The s the Bohr Institute was the leading place in physics 32 nobel laurates have been trained there Intense work was mixed with a conducive and stimulating personal and scientific environment How can we repeat this succes?

24 1. Selected future research projects How to cre ate an inte rnational re s e arch ce ntre of e xce lle nce. This question is more relevant than ever. The scientific research environment and at mosphere established at Bohr's institute in its golden age of the 1920s and 1930s is highly re garded and considered by many as the most fruit ful re search environment known. How and why did Bohr's institute become the main inter national centre for theoretical physics during this period? The study will be based to a great degree on the scientific papers of Bohr and other scientists work ing at the institute, supplemented by the extensive administrative records. It should include a comparative component and be conducted in close cooperation with relevant history of science and science archives institu tions around the world. The study can serve as model for similar research projects, and information gained from it will be of great interest for developing new research institutes and environments worldwide. Physics and Medicine Work by Bohr and Hevesy provided a basis for nuclear medicine How can we enhance the collaboration beteween physics and medicine? Bohr, his ins titute and Scandinavian phys ics. Bohr himself always emphasized Scandinavian cooperation, and this study will compare Bohr's ambitions in this re gard with the developments as they actually took place. The proj ect may lead to new insight into how to improve Scandinavian research cooperation as well as how to inspire broader studies of the history of Scandinavian science. Phys ics and me dicine. Interdisciplinary questions such as the im portant relationship bet ween physics and medicine in the twentieth century require further study. Bohr and his institute contributed im portantly to medical research in Denmark, especially with regard to the origins of nuclear medicine. Bohr was a strong supporter of his colleague George de Hevesy's efforts at the institute to develop his ra dioactive tracer technique for medical purposes after the discovery of induced radioactivity in Hevesy's papers are located at NBA, but need to be supplemented by documentation elsewh ere, especially from medical institutions in Copenhagen, where Hevesy suc cessfully promoted his technique. In particular, biological studies at the insti tute got going after the submittance of an application to the Rocke feller Foundation by Bohr, Heves y and August Krogh, who particip ated actively in the joint efforts and whom Bohr helped at critical stages of his activities. Th is study will involve close collaboration with leaders in the field of nuclear medicine in Copenhagen, and Dr. Liselotte Højg aard, head of the nuclear medicine department at Copenhagen University Hospital, has already shown great interest in it.
