Monday, September 28th Exponent Unit Exam TODAY On your desk you may have a pencil, eraser and a calculator. When you are finished, try the problem on the board.

When you are finished... In one grade at a school, the subjects math, physics, chemistry, biology, English, and history are taught by three teachers, Ms. Anderson, Mr. Knight, and Ms. Evans. (A) Each teacher teaches exactly two subjects. (B) Ms. Anderson is the youngest of the three teachers (C) The math teacher and Ms. Evans always go swimming together (D) The chemistry teacher lives in the same house as the math teacher. (E) The physics teacher is younger than Mr. Knight; the biology teacher is younger than the physics teacher. (F) The oldest of the three teachers lives alone, nearest to the school. Which teachers teach which subjects? Anderson teaches math and biology Knight teaches English and History Evans teaches physics and chemistry

Unit 2: Measurement Lesson 1: Imperial Units and Conversion In 1976, Canada adopted SI units to measure length. However, construcon and manufacturing industries connue to use imperial units. Many Canadians use imperial units to measure their height. What are some objects we measure with imperial units and what are some objects we measure with metric units? Gimli Glider: Why is unit conversion so important?

Imperial Unit Abbreviaon Referent Relaonship between Units Inch in. Thumb length Foot. Foot length 1. = 12 in. Yard yd. Arm span Mile mi. Distance walked in 20 minutes 1 yd. = 3. 1 yd. = 36 in. 1 mi. = 1760 yd. 1 mi. = Many rulers marked with imperial units show one inch divided into eighths, tenths, or sixteenths. To measure the length of an object, you must first determine the smallest indicated unit by counting the number of divisions between two adjacent inch marks. The ruler below has 16 divisions between two adjacent inch marks, so the smallest indicated unit is 1/16 of an inch, which is written as 1/16 in.

Converting Between Imperial Units Helpful hint: Use the chart on your formula sheet. If converng from le to right, MULTIPLY. If converng from right to le, DIVIDE. 1. Convert 5 yd. to: a. feet b. inches

2. Convert 51 in. to: a. feet and inches b. yards, feet and inches

Tuesday, September 29th, 2015 Please hand in your portfolio! hps://

What is a referent? What is the best SI measurement to measure your hand with?

What is proportional reasoning? Problem Solving Involving Converting Between Units 1. Annie is framing a picture. The perimeter of the framed picture will be 136 in. a. What will the perimeter of the framed picture in feet and inches? b. The framing material is sold by the foot. It costs $1.89/. What will be the cost of material before taxes?

2. The school council has 6 yd. of fabric that will be cut into strips 5 in. wide to make decorave banners for the school dance. How many banners can be made?

Solving a Problem Involving Scale Diagrams 1. A map of Alaska has a scale of 1 : The distance on the map between Paxson and the Canadian border is in. What is this distance to the nearest mile?

Lesson 1 Homework: Workbook Page 153: 1 3

Lesson 2: Relating SI and Imperial Units Each measurement in the imperial system relates to corresponding measurement in the SI system. This table shows some approximate relaonships between imperial units and SI units.

To convert within the metric system: The biggest advantage to that the metric system has over other systems of measurement is that the units are related to each other by factors of ten. Let s come up with an acronym! 452 km = m 2456 m = km 8342 mm = m

Converting from Metres to Feet A bowling lane is approximately 19 m long. What is this measurement to the nearest foot? Converting between Miles and Kilometres Aer meeng in Emerson, Manitoba, Sam drove 62 mi. south and Alexa drove 98 km north. Who drove farther?

Solving a Problem that Involves Unit Conversions 1. Alex is 6. 2 in. tall. To list his height on his driver s license applicaon, Alex needs to convert this measurement to cenmetres. What is Alex s Height to the nearest cenmeter? 2. What is your height in feet and inches? What is your height in cenmetres? 3. A truck driver knows that her semitrailer is 3.5 m high. The support beams of a bridge are in. high. Will the vehicle fit under the bridge? Jusfy your answer?
