Which clock below shows 4:30? Explain to a partner how you know. Be sure to use the words minute hand and hour hand. A B Share your reasoning... 8

Estimating Time with the Hour and Minute Hand 9

Let's take a closer look at our clock hands. As the hour hand is pointing toward the 4 and the minute hand is in the o'clock position, what happens as the minute hand begins to move around the clock face? Interactive Clock Click on clock to go to interactive clock What do you notice about the hour hand? 10

What kinds of words do we use to describe where the hands are on the clock? about o'clock just before o'clock between and o'clock almost o'clock just after o'clock Time is always an ESTIMATE. By the time you say the time, it's already a little later! 11

Where is the minute hand pointing? The minute hand will always point to the 6 for times that are half-past or 30 minutes past the hour. The hour hand will always be half way between the current hour and the next hour. 12

13

If you don't need to know the exact time, which hand is more important? Could you tell time with a clock that only has a minute hand? Explain. What about only an hour hand? Which hand helps you tell time to the nearest minute? 14

Let's look at your toolkit clock. This is an ANALOG clock. It has an hour hand, minute hand, numbers and can have marks around the clock face. 18

How many hours does it take for the hour hand to move from the 1 to the 2? 2 to the 3? Interactive Clock Click on clock to go to interactive clock 19

How long does it take the hour hand to move completely around the clock face? Interactive Clock Click on clock to go to interactive clock 20

Count the minute marks by 5s around the clock. How many minutes are in 1 hour? Interactive Clock Click on clock to go to interactive clock 21

Reviewing Time to the Hour and the Half Hour 22

Set your clock for 5:00. Move the hour hand and minute hand one hour forward. What time is it? Interactive Clock Click on clock to go to interactive clock How many hours have passed? How many minutes have passed? 23

Set your clock for 3:00. Move the hour hand and minute hand 30 minutes forward. What time is it? Interactive Clock Click on clock to go to interactive clock How many minutes have passed? Where is the hour hand now? Why? 24
