Course Description: Topics include Maxwell's equations, electromagnetic radiation, the theory of electromagnetic fields in matter, and Einstein's special theory of relativity. Useful text: D.J. Griffiths, Introduction to Electrodynamics, 4 th Edition (Pearson, 2013). Grading policy: PARTS 1 & 2: 10% (grad students only) - 2 PROBLEMS PROPOSED FOR HMWK 1: Neatly typed and submitted electronically by Tuesday, Feb. 04 It is up to you to decide what sources to use and what problems to propose, as long as the problems are not embarrassingly simple. You are NOT allowed to use Griffiths. Sources must be cited. 20% (all students) - HMWK 1 (): Neatly written detailed solutions to HMWK 1 must be submitted and discussed with me Thursday, Feb. 18 Thursday, Mar. 06 (by appointment only) PART 3: 10% (grad students only) - 2 PROBLEMS PROPOSED FOR HMWK 2: Neatly typed and submitted electronically by Tuesday, Apr % (all students) - HMWK 2 (): Neatly written detailed solutions to HMWK 2 must be submitted and discussed with me Tuesday, Apr. 15 Thursday, Apr. 24 (by appointment only) PART 4: 20% (undergrad students only) - 2 TOPICS PROPOSED TO BE DISCUSSED IN PART 4 OF THE COURSE: Neatly typed and submitted electronically by Tuesday, Mar. 06. FINAL EXAM: Attendance: 40% - FINAL EXAM: No partial credit. To get 40%, you will have to correctly solve 4 problems (+ additional problems for absences), as shown in the Final exam table below. If everything goes well the Final Exam Problems will be based on the HMWK Mandatory

2 Homework: HMWK 1 will be assigned on Tue., Feb. 11 HMWK 2 will be assigned on Tue., Apr. 08 Homework rules: Collaboration while solving OK; submission & discussion individual Midterm exams: None Final exam: Mandatory Final exam rules: - Closed notes, closed book - A simple (non-graphing, non-symbolic, non-programmable) scientific calculator - No other electronic device(s) permitted - Must work individually How to do well in this 1. Read about the material to be covered in class before coming to lecture. class: 2. Attend every lecture. 3. Ask questions. 4. Participate in discussions. 5. Re-read (or better re-work) your notes after class. 6. Do assigned homework. 7. Use a buddy system: find a friend with whom to discuss physics. 8. Think about physics on a regular basis. 9. Think about physics as much as possible. 10. Think about physics at all times. 11. REMEMBER: If you decide to stay in academia, you will be competing against fanatics; so prepare early. 12. If everything fails, consider dropping the class before the deadline and retaking it at a later time. NOTE: In physics, learning can be frustrating and nonlinear. Often you have to work for a long time (many days and even weeks) without feeling that you are making much progress. Then, suddenly, everything falls into place and it all makes sense. But until the click, you can t be sure how much time you need to get it and it s difficult to plan As you solve a physics problem, stop and ask yourself: What (exactly) are you doing? Why are you doing it? How does it help you?
