1 Newsletter 2018 April 27 - Week 1 Term 2 Primary Swimming In Term One, Years 1 to 6 spent two weeks participating in swimming lessons at Casuarina Pool. The students gained a lot of satisfaction as they worked to build their confidence and skill in the water. They also consolidated their knowledge around safe water practices. They see the pictures of the boats, of the beaches, the cliffs and the soldiers and nurses who fought in the wars. To simplify a topic that often we as adults don t truly comprehend is no easy task. I had this conversation with a Year 1 students earlier this week. Sacrifice means to give up something willingly. Usually something special. The soldiers and nurses gave up so much so that we could live the wonderful lives we have today. For example, they gave up their warm, soft, snuggly beds and instead slept on stretchers, or sometimes they didn t even lie down but slept sitting on the dirt in trenches. So did they have pillows? No, not even pillows. And they gave up seeing their families every day face to face. They were daddies, uncles, brothers, aunties and sisters, but the only way they could talk to their families was through letters. These would often take weeks and weeks to get to the other side of the world. So they weren t allowed to talk on the phone? Well, no, there were no phones to talk on. Just letters. Cue confused looks so I explained a little further. There were no phones to talk on, no computers to send notes, no internet. Did that mean they had no WiFi?! That s right, no WiFi. There was a ripple of concern, exclamations of protest and shocked looks at this answer and it made me wonder, as I looked at the young, innocent faces in front of me, just how privileged and blessed we are. We live in such a privileged time with so many luxuries, so many things at our finger tips that the idea of sacrifice is quite a foreign concept. For that moment, I gave thanks to God that the greatest issue these children could think of would be to lose WiFi. Our little ones are blessed and I pray that they would truly appreciate what has been done for them and respond with gratitude and thankfulness. The reality is, many Australians have known first-hand what sacrifice truly means. And not just the giving up of material needs, but the giving up time with family, physical, mental and emotional health and for some, the ultimate sacrifice of their lives. It s not just children that struggle with this concept. It can be difficult for us to truly comprehend the sacrificial love of Jesus. He gave up the glories of Heaven for some straw in an animal s stable. He gave up face to face communion with God so he could look into the eyes of the sick, lost and hurting. He gave up comfort for lashings, brutality and the Cross. He gave up His life so that we could live. Why? Because of His great love for us. So that we can have direct communion with God. So that no longer would sin be a barrier or an obstacle when we believe in Him. We are so privileged. But so often, we take our freedom for granted, sometimes not even realising that we are free. And every now and then, we are reminded just how blessed we are, even if that reminder comes from a 6 year old s exclamation over the thought of not having WiFi! 4 NTCC NEWS Health Careers Day In Week 11 of Term 1, nine students in Years 10 and 11 had the opportunity to participate in the Health Careers To Try day at the Royal Darwin Hospital. It was a fantastic day where students were able to explore 15 different types of careers within the Health Industry. Some of these included plastering, nutrition, occupational therapy, surgery, radiography & X-ray, midwifery and many more. There were many great learning moments and laughs, especially when Lucy helped give birth to a gooey plastic baby and Geraldine had a plaster on her arm sawed off! A touch of royalty! On Tuesday 10th of April, Mrs Kadirgamar attended a function at Government House. Mrs K was invited to the event as a parent of Kevin Kadirgamar who was nominated for Young Australian of the Year in Whilst at this function, Mrs K met Prince Charles whom she describes as quite down to earth. Congratulations on being Kevin s mum and having this opportunity to meet with royalty.

Please ensure your child is wearing the correct College uniform (more details available on our website). All families should have received a letter and ordering envelope through your child and you only need to complete one envelope per family. Alternatively, you can follow the instructions to order online, with a prepayment discount of $15 for packages A to H being available, if you order any time before the 18th May. 7 What s Happening Around MCC Swimming Carnival Our whole College swimming carnival is on again this coming Friday (4th May) from 8.45am onwards at the Parap Pool. Please join us to cheer your child on and remember to wear your house colours! There will be plenty of shade and you can buy a sausage sizzle for lunch. Sports for Schools This promotion has ended at Coles, so now it is time to hand in your vouchers to the Front Reception. All vouchers must be handed in by Friday 11th May - please don't leave them sitting at home! So far we have received 23,000 vouchers!
