JULIUS HARVEY FERNEY, b. 17 Oct 1915, Walla Walla, WA 175 ; d. 11 Jun 1998, Gresham, Multnomah, OR 176 ; m. KARHRYN KRISTJANSON. Notes for JULIUS HARVEY FERNEY: Walla Walla Union Bulletin (Walla Walla, Washington) > 1948 > November > 14, page 2 Julius Ferney In Far North Julius Ferney, formerly of Walla Walla has gone far both in mileage and experience since he started work as a linotypist for the Walla Walla Union shortly before it combined with the Bulletin in Ferney, son of Jesse Ferney who operates an old book store on West Main street attended Walla Walla high school. He now runs a tri-weekly paper at Sitka, Alaska. When not playing in the school band here, he would be in his father's printing shop absorbing the fragrance of ink, and learning about the typesetting machines and presses. Between time spent in this town and his Alaskan venture started last spring, Ferney worked for the Oregonian for a short period and then for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Prior to taking over the Sitka Sentinel, he ran a neighborhood weekly at Richland Beach near Everett. Ferney finds everywhere he goes that people consider the same sort of news interesting. Copies of the Sentinel, sent to the elder Ferney, show that Alaskans like to follow the world series, electioneering, scores of local team games, and the fishing and lumbering industries which help to support the town. The as show that people of Alaska think of traveling primarily in terms of boats and planes. They also follow reports of hunters getting lost. 19 Walla Walla Union Bulletin (Walla Walla, Washington) > 1954 > February > 9, page 4 CHRISTMAS TIME... A nine foot Christmas tree, properly trimmed, and a turkey dinner -- as well as Christmas presents -- brought December 25 to the home of Mr. and Mrs. John McKnight on Sunday. Why? Because Mrs. McKnight's brother, Edward Gwinn, A3-c, had just arrived home from Korea. He had expected to be back in Walla Walla in time for Christmas so his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Gwinn of Clyde, and other family members hadn't sent his presents to him... And they felt, anyway, he was entitled to a Christmas at home... Thirty-seven friends and relatives were around the tree, among them Airman Gwinn's grandmother, Mrs. Mary Gwinn of Walla Walla; his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Kirk Hulburt of Eureka, who took lots of homemade Christmas candy; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Reed and their children of Spokane, and O. S. Nelson of Pasco... Unable to be present was Airman Gwinn's other sister, Mrs. Carlyle Mcknight (the Gwinn sisters married brothers) of Portland. But she called to wish him Merry Christmas... He'll be reporting back soon to Parks Air Force Base in California. *********** Walla Walla Union Bulletin (Walla Walla, Washington) > 1965 > December > 23, page 2 FROM NEAR, FAR... Mr. and Mrs. John McKnight, 1479 S. 2nd, have all their family home for Christmas. Mrs. McKnight's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Gwinn, who spend their winters in California, drove up with the McKnights' daughter, Sharon, employed with the Hartford Insurance Co., in San Francisco. She has but a brief time so they'll be returning South Sunday, but even this will be more pleasurable than last Christmas when she was unable to come home at all... The Gwinns are spending most of their time in Concord, Calif... Bill McKnight, freshman at Pacific University, Forest Grove, Ore., is also home for the holidays and rounding out the family circle is Svein Havag, Norwegian exchange student at Wa-Hi, who lives with the McKnghts and is a fellow senior with their son, Scott, at the local school... This Christmas season has also brought special joy to the McKnights in a card of greeting from the Nigerian student who was with them one summer, first word they'd had in some time. He's now Dr. Magnus Adelie, having completed work and received his doctorate in comparative education at the University of Ottawa. Now he's at the University of Nigeria... His student days in this area were spent at WSU. ************** Walla Walla Union Bulletin (Walla Walla, Washington) > 1966 > December > 22, page 5 HOME FOR CHRISTMAS... At the John McKnight home on Route 3 the Christmas season finds their son, Scott, home from University of Puget Sound; another son, Bill, coming from Pacific University; and their daughter, Sharon, expected to arrive from San Francisco where she is employed.
