1 The oracle of Delphi goes back at least 3400 years. Originally a fissure, a crack in the ground, its intoxicating fumes creating an altered state of consciousness. The Greeks built a temple around it, installed a young virgin priestess and each month after days of fasting and undergoing purificatory rites, she would inhale the fumes, and upon entering an altered state of consciousness she would address the gods. The synthetic plasticity of todays civilisation would flinch at such concepts but ancient Europe was constantly looking to the stars, searching for communion with the divine. Its said that one 1 / 5
2 can fool some of the people some of the time but not all of the people all of the time, yet the oracle of Delphi was so powerful it held centre stage and captivated the intellectuals of Greece for over 1200 years, its most famous question was who was the wisest man in Athens to which the oracle replied Socrates. Delphi was not the only oracle, and psychadelic communion was seen throughout and beyond Greece. The oracle of Dodona, Thebes, Boeotia, Attica, Eutresis, Euboea, Argos, Didyma, Claros, Grynea, Lesbos, Delos, Lycia, Cilicia, Caria, Olympia, Libya, Daunia, Achaia, Laconia, Iberia, and there must be numerous other oracles which have been lost to history. 2 / 5
3 Over the years another oracle emerged, one belonging not to Greece, but to Rome, the oracle known as the Vatican. Arguments go back and forth but it seems the name is a mixture of an Etruscan god named "Vatica" the power of prophecy known as "vates" and an intoxicating grape bearing the same name. The Etruscans some 3000 years ago ruled over Tuscany ( named after them ) as well as Lazio and Umbria the foundations of Roman civilisation. The Etruscans buried their dead outside their walls in the city of the dead guarded by "Vatica" the Etruscan goddess of the underworld. The hill upon which she resided was known as "Vatica hill" a cemetery, which was soon to become Rome and the holy Vatican city. "Vatica" is also the name of a bitter grape which grew upon the graveyard slope and growing next to it was a weed named "cannabis vatica". In his book " The Sistine Secrets " Rabbi Benjamin Blech explains that the word "vatika" comes from the Etruscan name for a bitter grape used to make hallucinogenic wine and that it was connected to an Etruscan goddess, also named Vatika, who was worshipped on a hilltop necropolis just outside of Rome. 3 / 5
