1 GEOLOGY 3715 PETROLOGY & PETROGRAPHY (3 S. H.) S 07 Prof. - Dr. Loren A. Raymond (raymondla@appstate.edu) PETROLOGY encompasses the study of rocks. The Appalachian State University Bulletin indicates that This course includes a study of the microscopic, mesoscopic, and macroscopic features; the mineralogy, and the chemistry of rocks; and the study of petrogenetic theory. The course is designed with special emphasis on igneous and metamorphic rocks. The lecture part of the course emphasizes igneous and metamorphic petrogenesis as determined through field and laboratory studies. The origins of some sedimentary rocks are discussed. Laboratory work is designed to introduce the student to a wide variety of rock types in both hand specimen and in thin section. Comparative work involving thin section and chemical data promotes abetter understanding of petrogenesis Field trip observations introduce the student to field occurrences and the larger structural features of rocks. GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: The goals and objectives of Petrology are as follows. GOAL 1. To introduce the student to the descriptive aspects of petrology Objective 1. To introduce the student to handspecimen and thin section aspects of petrographic description Objective 2. To introduce the student to common structures and textures found in igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks Objective 3. To introduce the student to chemical features of rocks Objective 4. To strengthen and expand the student s understanding of rock classification GOAL 2. To introduce the student to important petrogenetic theories Objective 5. To introduce the student to current petrogenetic theories relating to igneous rocks Objective 6. To introduce the student to some aspects of the origin of sedimentary rocks Objective 7. To introduce the student to current petrogenetic theories relating to the origins of metamorphic rocks Objective 8. To show students the relationships between plate tectonics and petrogenesis OFFICE AND OFFICE HOURS: M,W 10 11:00 am M 12:15-1 pm W 12:30 2:00 pm T 8:30 11:00 am. T 2:00 3:00 pm Other hours by Appt. METHODS OF TEACHING: The methods of learning used in petrology include professorial lecture, class discussion, individual laboratory work on rocks and thin sections, 10 one-on-one rock analyses by each student with the professor, preparation of a term paper, two field trips to examine rock structures, textures, and types in the field, quizzes, and homework problems. Students will use computers in preparing text and graphics for their term papers and petrographic microscopes for modal analysis of rocks in thin section. FIELD TRIP: Field trips are invaluable for understanding rock associations and origins. Two all day field trips are scheduled during the semester. You must participate
2 Petrology Syllabus S 07 - p. 2 COURSE REQUIREMENTS: MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS 1.Participation on both field trips is required (unless authorization to miss a trip has been obtained in advance). 2. An overall grade of 40% on all work must be achieved. 3. Credit for 10 rock descriptions reviewed with the professor. 4. Credit for a minimum of 20 rock descriptions. 5. Completion of a university level term paper. 6. Correct identification of 50% of the rocks (by root name) on the laboratory final. GRADING: Final grades will be based on the student s rank on a scale developed over several years of teaching Petrology. Rank on the scale will be based on a point total obtained from evaluations of the following work. Homework (50) & Quizzes (50) Intraterm Exam 1 Intraterm Exam pts. Laboratory Midterm 40 pts. Laboratory work 170 pts. Laboratory Final 90 pts. Term paper - final draft due 5:00 pm, 09 April 2004 Final Examination pts. TOTAL 900 pts. TERM PAPER: Preparation and submission of a term paper is a requirement for passing Petrology. Term papers will be prepared on a topic selected by 17 January. Reference List: On 29 January, each student will submit a reference list for his or her term paper. The list must include a minimum of 9 references, not more than half of which may be pre No grade will be assigned for the reference list, but a penalty of 5 pts. per day will be assessed until the list is submitted correctly. The penalty will be taken from the final term paper grade. Outline Due: 19 February 2007 Introduction: On 28 February the introduction for your paper is due. This deadline MUST be met ON TIME. Writing problems evident in outlines will be discussed in a subsequent class meeting. Rough Draft: A rough draft, prepared in computer printed form, must be submitted by 5 pm on 2 April (Note: It may be turned in earlier, but not later without a penalty). Consider this to be the deadline for your term paper. Submit the rough draft of the paper as if it were the final draft (i.e. The paper must be complete, including references. Illustrations may be rough copies, however.). The draft will not receive a letter or point grade, but a penalty of 10 points per day or part thereof will be assessed for late drafts. Drafts will be thoroughly evaluated for grammar, style, content, and format and returned to the student for revisions. Length: There is no predetermined length for the paper. It should be thorough, yet concise. Good papers are typically pages long and contain tables and illustrations. Format: The paper should be prepared in the Geological Society of America Bulletin format, except for those items noted below. The following guidelines supersede those of the Bulletin. Also, use Times 12 pt. font or New York 10 pt. font
3 Petrology Syllabus S 07 - p. 3 Format Specifications: 1. Double space all text. 2. Single space references and figure captions. 3. Justify left only. 4. Capitalize all letters in the title. 5. Include figures in the text, always at the top, never within text or at the bottom of a page. 6. Margins: 1.5 on left and 1 top, bottom, and right. Final Draft: The final, revised version of your paper is due on Friday 20 April by 5 pm. Late papers will not be accepted after Tuesday 24 April. NOTE: LATE PAPERS WILL BE ASSESSED A PENALTY OF 10% PER DAY. 4 Petrology Syllabus S 07 - p. 4 ATTENDANCE: Attendance is expected in all classes, laboratory sessions, and on all field trips. Although a student s grade is not dependent directly on attendance, it is unlikely that passing work can be completed without continuous attendance Field Trip Safety Field trips have inherent hazards. These include falling or loose rocks in outcrops, passing vehicles at road cuts; and flying rock chips created by pounding on rocks. Safety is your responsibility. Use seat belts while traveling in the van. Do not stand in roadways. Avoid climbing high on outcrops or road cuts (they often contain loose rocks). Beware of falling rocks. Wear protective goggles available from the Laboratory Manager. Check for ticks after returning to the van and when you arrive home. Watch out for poisonous snakes, when you traverse grassy areas. FIRE Alarms If the alarm rings, you MUST leave the building, taking with you your books and other valuables if time permits. REMAINING IN THE BUILDING OR ENTERING THE BUILDING BEFORE THE ALL- CLEAR CAN RESULT IN A LEGAL CHARGE OF TRESPASSING. Everyone must stay at least 50 feet from the building until the all-clear is given by the fire and/or university police officials and relayed to the chairs and departmental safety officers. In case of a fire alarm, I will instruct you as to whether the class is canceled or will reconvene at some other locality. SMOKING, DRUGS, ETC. Smoking is not allowed in the van. If you smoke, do so ONLY in non-flammable areas, such as along gravely roadsides. Use of illegal drugs is prohibited at all times and places and no alcoholic beverage can be consumed in the van. Conduct yourself at all times in a manner appropriate to your position as a representative of an institution of higher learning.
