1 GEOL Adv Topic:Igm/Metam Petrology Syllabus Professor Dr. Justin Filiberto Office Hours: Open Door Park 203 Course Time: M W F 9 9:50 Parkinson Filiberto@siu.edu Phone: Course Expectation: Upon conclusion of this course, students will 1) design 10 short research projects in areas of petrology, and 2) gain knowledge of oxygen fugacity, phase equilibrium, and thermodynamics appropriate to petrology. Optional Textbooks: Principles of Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology Philpotts and Ague Petrology : Igneous, Sedimentary, Metamorphic 3rd edition Blatt, Tracy, and Owens Principles of Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology 2nd edition Winter Grading: Grading will be based on: 1) 2 page double spaced research projects summaries for each topic listed below, 2) homework assignments, 3) a take home final project, 4) attendance/participation. All proposal summary and research project lengths do not include references or figures. They are to be written in 12 point times new roman font and double spaced. Research Project Summaries and Homework (all equally graded): 60% Final: 30% Attendance/Participation: 10% Grading: The grade boundaries will be (whichever is lower): A 90% B 80% C 70% D 60% F Below 60% All work is due at the start of class. Any work turned in after that will receive a late grade. 5 points will be deducted as soon as class is over. After that, 10 points will be deducted for every

2 day the homework is late. Once homework is returned to the class, late work will no longer be accepted and the grade will receive a 0. Academic honesty: Any form of academic dishonesty will result in a zero for that assignment, quiz, exam, as well as possible disciplinary action. See your student handbook for guidelines. It is important that you follow these instructions and stay with your instructor during an evacuation or sheltering emergency. The Building Emergency Response Team will provide assistance to your instructor in evacuating the building or sheltering within the facility.
