The Geopark has abundant geological heritages which can be generally classified into 11 categories: karst cave, karst gorge, karst natural bridge, karst tiankeng, karst high fengcong, karst hill, karst cuesta and pictographic mountain, karst hydrology, palaeontological fossil, stratum and rock, tectonic geological heritage, etc. 3 Public Interpretation of the Geopark s sites of interest 3.1Number of sites with public Interpretation (trails, interpretation panels or leaflets): Zhijindong Cave Scenic Area: 51 scenic spots; Qijiehe River Scenic Area: 27 scenic spots; Dongfenghu Lake Scenic Area: 19 scenic spots; the whole Geopark: 8 scenic spots (Table 1-2). 3.2Geosites of Scientific Importance: Zhijindong Cave group, Zhijin Gorge, Zhijin tiankeng group, Karst fengcong, Karst hill, Karst Cuesta, Karst pictographic mountain, multi-level karst denudation surface and so on (Table 1-2). 3.3Geosites used for Education: Zhijindong Cave, Cave chamber group of Zhijindong Cave, Qijiehe River gorge group, Dacaokou Gorge, Dongfenghu Lake gorge group, Lujiadu Gorge, Pengjiazhai Gorge, Dahebian Gorge and so on (Table 1-2). 3.4Geosites used for Geotourism: Zhijindong Cave, Talin Palace, Hall of Miraculous Mist, Moon Palace, Shiwan Mountain, Overlord Hamlet, Fu-Lu-Shou, Buddha statue, Silver Rain Tree, Sibling Jade Tree, World Cup, Gurong Zhenghui, Xiniu Wangyue Natural Bridge, Tiangu Natural Bridge, Dacaokou Tiankeng, Lujiadu cuesta, Sunziyan, Chuantoushan and so on (Table 1-2). 3.5Non-Geological Sites used by the Geopark (intergraded in Geoparks activities): Wax printing craft, Zhijin marmite, Guanzhai Old Town, Huawuji Old Town, Dazhai Village, TianguVilla, Xiahongyan ethnic village, "Flower Dance Festival" of Miao nationality, Torch Festival" of Yi nationality and so on (Table 1-2). At the same time, garbage cans are provided along the tour route to recycle the garbage by category. 4.2Conservation measures: The Administration for Zhijindong cave Geopark is established and its most important responsibility is to protect the geosites, namely strictly protect geosite areas by making use of relevant laws, strictly forbid all construction projects in violation of the rules and regulations prevailing inside the geopark and surroundings. After the national geopark was built, local governments at 21

22 all levels and residents began to attach great importance to the vegetation construction again, and conducted forest reservation and tree planting activities, therefore, the vegetation coverage is increased gradually, which has reached 68% in the geopark at present. At the same time, cleaning and renovation work of geopark and the surrounding environment protection are strengthened to ensure that overall environment of the geopark is beautiful and clean. Protected signs in Zhijindong cave 4.3 Protective measures (preparation, sealing to avoid natural degradation): For all important geosites (areas) in the geopark, different protection measures have been adopted. To protect various fragile stalactite landscapes in the geopark from artificial or natural damage, in some typical and precious geosites such as Overlord Helmet, Silver Rain Tree, One-Line-Sky, Three-class Canopy and Chinese lute, etc., protective fence have been set up around them to protect them from direct touch by tourists; in addition, special persons have been assigned in Zhijindong Cave to make routine check up irregularly; at the same time, cave air environment monitoring point has been set up inside the cave to monitor the change of cave air environment; some cave stalactite landscapes and areas with very fragile environment like branch cave of Crystal Palace, Water Resort, and Golden Mouse Palace, etc. have been no longer opened to tourists, only for researchers from relevant research departments. For typical geosites in Qijiehe River Scenic Area and Dongfenghu Lake Scenic Area like Tiangu Natural Bridge, Xiniu Wangyue Natural Bridge, Chuantoushan and Sunziyan, relevant protection signboards have been set up around them and it is forbidden to explode stones on the surrounding mountains. Ⅲ. Geology and Landscape 1 Natural Rank 1.2 Other International Designation in part of the Geopark territory: Member of International Show Cave Association. Zhijindong Cave became the member of International Show Cave Association in Headquarters of the third International Show Cave Association in Spanish of Europe in October, National designation in part of the Geopark territory Zhijindong Cave National Scenic Area: approved by Ministry of Construction of the People s Republic of China in

23 Guizhou Zhijindong Cave National Geopark: be qualified as National geopark by Ministry of Land and Resources of People s Republic of China in January, 04; it was officially inaugurated on January 8, 06. Chinese national natural heritage: approved by Ministry of Construction of the People s Republic of China in 06. National AAAA-class tourist attraction: approved by National Tourism Administration in 08. Science popularization base for Ministry of Land and Resources: approved by Ministry of Land and Resources of People s Republic of China in Regional designation in part of the Geopark territory Hometown of bamboo fungus in China: In August, 00, Zhijin County was awarded as Hometown of Bamboo Fungus in China by China Edible Fungi Association. 2 Cultural Rank Zhijin Zhusun (bamboo fungus hometown of China) 2.4Regional designation in part of the Geopark territory Guizhou provincial level culture relic protection unit: Temple of Wealth, Fengxi Academy of Classical Learning and Kuige attic, etc. 2.5 Local designation in part of the Geopark territory Guanzhai Old Town: it is an important village of ancient Yi nationality in Shuixi and also the place where the former residence of An Bangyan, deputy magistrate of Xuanwei county, Guizhou province, was built in the later Ming Dynasty. It covers an area of 580,000m 2 which mainly focuses on culture of Yi nationality with less Miao and Han nationality culture, and it is classified as county level human culture protection unit by Zhijin County Government. 24 3 Promotion and maintenance of Natural and Cultural Heritage 3.1 Interpretation Each natural and cultural heritage site in the geopark is interpreted, which is effectively protected and maintained regularly. 3.2 Education programmes Film shot advertising video of Zhijindong Cave Geopark narrates the geological development history of Zhijin area, and overview of major geosites in the geopark as well as their formation and evolution modes; at the same time, geological knowledge will be popularized to the public in a straightaway manner via geosite explanation board. One new museum and three galleries of geological science popularization are established where geological knowledge will be explained in a concentrated manner. At the same time, in the geopark training courses, the educational programmes to the natural and cultural heritage are included. HD DVD Documentary of Zhijindong Cave Geopark 3.3 Communication The public and geopark tourists can get the related information about the natural and cultural heritage from the free geopark leaflets and other printed materials, and the qualified geopark guides can also provide relevant knowledge to tourists during the guided tour. The geopark also organizes a series of activities to promote the relevant knowledge of natural and cultural heritage such as Zhijindong Cave Geopark science popularization lecture for local people, teaching and practice of relevant colleges in Zhijindong Cave, special science popularization activities to ordinary tourists, elementary school students and middle school students in the region. 3.4 Promotion of the links between Geological Heritage sites and the existing Natural and cultural sites within the Geopark Establish Zhijindong Cave Geopark Museum and three galleries of geological science popularization to introduce the physical geography of the geopark and overview of social-cultural background, evolution history of regional geology, type and distribution of main geosites and geological landscapes, geological background, formation and evolution, scientific research history and achievements of the geopark, the international comparison and scientific significance of geosite in the geopark, protection, construction and development of the geopark, resources of animals and 24

25 plants,historic and cultural landscape, custom and habit in the geopark, etc. by making use of pictures, words, models, material objects and videos. II. MANAGEMENT STRUCTURE 1 How is the Applicants management structure organized? 1.1 Does the Geopark has a clear and well defined boundary? The geopark is a complete territory, composed of three connecting scenic areas, with a clear and well defined boundary, covering an area of 170 km Does the Geopark have well defined and effective management structure which is able to take and implement decisions to enhance protection of Geological Heritage and promote sustainable regional development for the Geopark area? Administration for Zhijindong cave National Geopark has been set up, it is an effective management organization in charge of daily management of the Geopark, which is able to take and implement decisions to enhance geological heritage and promote sustainable development for the geopark. 1.3 Is the Geopark staff employed directly or indirectly by Geopark partners? The Administration for Zhijindong cave National Geopark is a formal governmental unit, its staff are directly employed by the Bijie Government. 1.4 An independently administered budget Due to a governmental unit, the geopark has an independently administered budget, which is included in the local financial budget. The geopark can obtain financial supports from Guizhou Province government and Chinese government to support geopark infrastructure projects, geological heritage protection and scientific research, etc. 2 Does a management or Master Plan exist? (not older than years) Yes, the master plan(12-25)involves following highlights: (1)Formulating near, mid and long development targets, scientific research, science popularization, action plans are included. (2)Formulating (development strategic planning of geopark),including overall layout of geopark, protection plan (including protection of geosite, natural ecological environment and human relics), geological tourism program and the tourism route planning, tourism infrastructure planning, narration planning, science popularization and action planning, information construction planning, scientific research planning, land utilization and regulation planning, and social control planning, etc. (3)Strengthening the involvement of local communities, realizing the sustainable development of the geopark (4)Improving the geopark management structure, employing more professional personnel. 3 Master Plan Components -What components does it includes? 3.13 Do you have targets for the following goals? 25

26 Geology: Including: projects involving the detailed investigation and research on the geosites of Zhijindong Cave Geopark, research on development characteristic of Zhijindong Cave and characteristic of cave secondary chemical sediment and research on formation evolution model of karst landform of Zhijindong Cave Geopark, etc., in order to clarify the development characteristics and formation evolution of various geosites in the geopark in details. Landscape protection: to make more efforts on geosite protection. For example, carry out investigation and research on air environment of Zhijindong Cave to ensure that development environment of cave secondary chemical sediment will remain well. Tourism geotourism :Besides the existing tour route of sightseeing and science popularization in Zhijindong Cave, other two main geological tourism routes are designed and promoted: tour route of Qijiehe gorge-natural bridge-tiankeng geological scientific investigation and popularization, and tour route of Dongfenghu sightseeing and science popularization on water gorge. Agriculture and forestry:forest vegetation region in the geopark is divided into different functional regions, including extra protection area (point), area closed for afforestation, landscape reforestation area, economic fruit-bearing forest area, and grazing-cultivation area, etc. Combine with relevant government policies on the Grain-to-Green to encourage the local residents to plant various seasonal fruits and wild fruits with a view to improve their living standard and the vegetation environment as well. 4 Does your Application have a Marketing Strategy As you know, many karst wonders develop in Guizhou Plateau, and lots of colorful and rich nationality cultures are conserved and passed down successfully, therefore, Guizhou Plateau becomes a famous tourist destination both at home and abroad. In 13, more than 267,612,800 people travelled to Guizhou Plateau. However, in the past, only a small part of tourists came and visited the geopark (about 850,000 person-times in 13), triggering the problem of how to attract more tourists to visit the geopark is major task for the geopark. Zhijindong cave Geopark has formulated a series of measures to achieve this goal, which include setting up mutual promotion panels at the main scenic spots in Guizhou Province, establish reciprocal and win-win relation with other famous scenic spots and establish tour route in central Guizhou jointly, and improving the traffic guide boards along both sides of the major highways leading to the geopark. Besides, the geopark used to take part in and will continue to take part in various national/regional tourism fairs to expand the geopark influence, and also carry out a series of promotion activities through various media, such as newspapers, broadcasting and TV media. 6 Are there any initiatives or working groups who discuss the promotion of natural and cultural heritage From August 11 to 14, 13, the 28th annual 26

27 meeting of geoscience and geopark research branch, Geological Society of China, and seminar on construction and tourist development of Guizhou Zhijindong Cave National Geopark was held in the Geopark. At this meeting, the construction and tourism development strategy of the Geopark was discussed. III. Information and Environmental Education 5 Geology provision for school groups. For example, organized visits etc Guided tourist by Applicant s staff The guided tourist for (any special team visiting the geopark, like school groups) are mainly organized by the geopark staff, which has been trained in basic geology and geopark. The guided tours for groups 5.3 Standard programs, regularly available for all park visitors The geopark provides standard programs to all geopark tourists, including visiting major geosites along designed routes in different scenic areas; for special tourists, the geopark can also provide scientific investigations along the other geotrails and specific geosites. 5.4 Limited group size (max. 30 persons per guide) To meet the visiting interest, comfort and expectation of tourists and guarantee personal safety of them, it is clearly stipulated by the Administration for the geopark that: when travelling in Zhijindong Cave Scenic Area or Dacaokou Gorge Scenic Area or Dongfenghu Lake Scenic Area, the number of each team shall be no more than Are alternatives available if tour is impossible due to bad weather conditions? Yes, there are one geopark museum, and tourist center and 4-D cinema to conduct alternative visits due to bad weather. 5.6 Do programs exist for different ages? Yes, the geopark provide various programs for children, primary and middle school and college students. 5.7 Do special, scientific programs exist? Yes, there are three main galleries for sightseeing and science popularization; in addition, there are many special programs for scientific investigation and research. 5.8 Is teacher training offered in matters relating to the Applicant? Yes, the geopark offered special training courses for teachers from local primary and middle schools, or from the primary and middle schools are arranged through the 27

28 Education Commission of Guizhou province, so these trained teachers could be as geotourism leaders to their students in the geopark. 6 Education Guides 6.1 Do you have at least one qualified expert in Geopark permanent staff providing guided visit that your organization has a role in developing? Yes, we have permanent staff (Mr.Liu Jiaren) who majored in geology and geological heritage protection, and can provide guided tour. 6.2 Do you have at least one qualified expert in partner organization providing guided visit that your organization has a role in developing? Yes, we always provide guided tour by the professors and MS or Ph. D candidates from our experts from Institute of Karst Geology, CAGS or partner university (Guizhou Normal University). 6.3 Personal guides in Geopark permanent staff The geopark has its own guides in its permanent staff, a few of them have degrees of related majors, and can provide both Chinese and English guide service. 6.4 Personal guides by partner organization The geopark have some partner organizations from other geoparks or universities or institute, they can provide personal guides to tourists. 6.5 Freelance guides whose training and/or program is supported by your organization Some freelance guides come from college students or local residents, the geopark provide related training to them. 6.6 Training courses for guides All guides in the geopark have participated in relevant training courses on geopark, geological heritage protection, basic geology and others. V. Sustainable Regional Economy 5 What kind of contracts are regularly offered to businesses in your area? 5.3 Other equipment and services to support geotourism and interpretation, e.g. transport, display cabinets etc. The geopark regularly sign contracts with the related businesses to make sure that everything work normally, including the geopark infrastructure projects, information sign system and interpretation panel design and construction, geopark souvenir design and production, geopark transport, geopark leaflet and other materials printing and geopark-appointed resturants and hotels, etc. 28
