5 Activities The following are the activities, lectures, and fieldtrips that the Society of Economic Geologists student chapter at the University of Utah has organized, co- organized or hosted. The key events of the year were hosting of SEG Research Symposium in association with the SEG chapter from the University of Orleans, France, University of Freiberg, Germany, and Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich Germany, Iron Springs field trip to Southern Utah, and individual member participation in various fieldtrips and conventions. 1. Open House The SEG Chapter co- organized Geology and Geophysics Student Club open house to promote student involvement in professional societies and clubs in early September, Co- organizing student clubs are local chapters of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG), and Student Advisory Committee (SAC). Kennecott, Utah, USA, October 3, 2015 Full- day field trip to Kennecott operations to examine 50 years of innovation in mining, metallurgy, smelting, exploration and environmental stewardship lead by Dr. Louis Connonellos, 50 year veteran Kennecott engineer and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Mining Engineering, UofU. About 50 SME, SEG and other UofU students participated.
10 4b. Iron Springs District field trip, Utah, USA, April 8-9, 2016 Two- day field trip was focused on iron mineralization and iron mining. Participants explored the iron occurrences at Twin Peaks (IOCG) and the iron mines and mineralization (IOCG) areas west of Cedar City, southern Utah, USA. Another theme of the field trip was Marcagunt Gravity Slide in South Western Utah. Field trip was led by Dr. Peter Rowley (Geologic Mapping, Inc.) and Dr. Erich U Petersen. 4.c Tintic Mining District, Utah, May 4 th A day- long field trip focused on hydrothermal alteration and ore mineralogy in Tintic Mining District, Utah, the USA. Nevada Gold Giants 2016 Geologic Society of Nevada, Elko, Nevada, USA, May 7-8, 2015 Two representatives from University of Utah chapter participated Nevada Gold Giants field trip organized by the Geologic Society of Nevada. The main theme of the trip was the genesis of the Carlin- type Au deposits, their exploration and exploitation. sponsored by Newmont mining company. Mines visited: The trip was Carlin (Newmont) Genesis (Newmont) Lentern (Newmont) Gold Field (Newmont) Historic Carlin Pit, Nevada, May 8 th, 2016 Participating organizations: The Society of Economic Geologists student chapter of the University of Orleans, France The Society of Economic Geologists student chapter of the University of Nevada, Reno The Society of Economic Geologists student chapter of the University of Utah, Salt Lake Newmont Mining Company

Ruby Mountains Metamorphic Core Complex, Nevada, USA May 9, 2016 A day long field trip was organized to the Lamoille Canyon of Ruby Mountains, Nevada in association with the SEG chapter from University of Orleans, France. The Ruby mountains is the classical showcase of the metamorphic core complex in North America. Lamoille Canyon exposes an ideal cross section of the detachment and core rocks. The field trip was lead by Dr. Michael Ressel, geologist at the Nevada Bureau of Mines, and Assistant Professor at the University of Nevada, Reno. 4f. Textures and alteration of volcanic rocks, Eureka, Utah, USA, September 1, 2016 This one- day field trip with the Technische Universitat Bergakademie Freiberg, Germany focused on the textures and alteration of volcanic rocks. Leaders: Dr. Erich Petersen (UofU), Dr. F. Christoph Breitkreuz (Technische Universitat Bergakasemie Freiberg), and Dr. Bodo- Carlo Ehling (Landesamt fur Geologie und Bergwesen Sachsen- Anhalt). 24 students. Structure and hydrothermal alteration in volcano- plutonic rocks, Eureka, Utah, USA, September 16, 2016 This one- day field trip with the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, Germany, co- sponsored by GSA, focused on the textures and alteration of volcanic rocks. Leaders: Drs. Erich U. Petersen (UofU), Dr. Anke Friedrich (LMU) and Dr. Sara. 10 students.
