Forward Thinking Engineering World leaders in geomechanics, hydrogeology and microseismicity. Solving problems for clients in the mining industry. Itasca offers advanced, first-hand knowledge of mining challenges around the globe and a collective pool of expertise covering a wide range of mine operations from hard to soft rock mining using both open pit and underground techniques. We understand the unique geomechanics, hydrologic and microseismic problems associated with surface and underground mines and the logistical constraints that often are encountered in solving these problems. Itasca is committed to using appropriate levels and methods of investigation that examine both technical and economic factors, and providing practical solutions that apply the best available technology. We are thoroughly familiar with design and ground stability, and also uniquely equipped to attack complex or non-standard problems. Our experienced staff work on projects from practical field solutions to design issues to applications of Itasca modeling tools for solving difficult or unusual problems that often arise in large open pits and deep mining. When it comes to high stress mining, let us take the pressure off you!
Who We Are Dr. Richard Brummer has 35 years of experience in geomechanics consulting, practical mining applications, research and academia. He is a Designated Consulting Engineer (Professional Engineers Ontario) and is a registered Professional Engineer in several provinces of Canada. His areas of specialization are all aspects of the behavior of highly stressed rock in deep mines or in extensively mined workings. He also has expertise in rockbursts, the design of microseismic and general instrumentation systems, the design of backfill and backfill systems, and particularly in the optimization of mining layouts to reduce risk and maximize value. He is the author of over 50 technical articles Luigi Cotesta has over 16 years of experience working on many aspects of geomechanics design for mine evaluation studies (scoping through execution), covering a wide range of mineral deposits for both greenfield and brownfield projects. His experience on these types of projects involves collection, analysis and interpretation of site characterization data, integration and analysis of multi-disciplinary datasets (geological, mine planning/production, geomechanical), sequence evaluation and optimization, stope and crown pillar design, numerical modelling, model calibration, trade-off studies and mining method evaluation. Mr. Cotesta is a Registered Professional Engineer in the province of Ontario and is a Director of Itasca Canada. Alex Hall has more than seven years of experience working in the mining industry for Vale, PotashCorp and Mosaic Potash, where he worked at seven different mines in various positions. His main areas of specialization are mine design, sequencing, numerical modelling, ground control, slope stability and drill and blasting. He has a wide variety of project experience in both surface and underground mines internationally. Mr. Hall has completed a Master's degree in Mineral Resource Engineering from Laurentian University, with a thesis topic on minimizing blast induced damage sustained to final open pit walls. Mr. Hall also has experience in underground supervising, mine planning, instrumentation installation, monitoring underground excavations and high-precision surveying. Dr. Tatyana Katsaga is a Geomechanics engineer with a Ph.D. in civil engineering. Her area of expertise is on the mechanics and numerical simulation of continuum and discrete media. She has more than 15 years of research and consulting experience, and has provided consulting on many projects including mining (e.g., deep mines, block cave mining, pillar stability, optimization of mining layouts), nuclear waste storage, geothermal energy and petroleum. Dr. Katsaga also specializes in geophysical data acquisition, including advanced processing and interpretation. Binod Paudel obtained his undergraduate degree in structural engineering and a masters degree in computational mechanics. He has about 7 years of experience in geomechanics/numerical-modelling and about 10 years of experience in construction management in the context of developing countries. His geomechanical expertise includes extensive use of geomechanics software such as FLAC3D, FLAC, 3DEC; creation of complex geomechanical models and seeking numerical solutions for problems such as stability of the rock-mass, response to sequential excavation, sensitivity, backfill, sills and pillars; design of barricades, processing and statistical evaluation of geomechanical data; analyses of the open pit slope stability, etc. Alexandr Turichshev is a rock mechanics engineer specializing in geomechanics applications to underground and open pit mining. He has over 12 years of experience in geomechanics consulting, 11 of which have been with Itasca. His specialties include field investigations, rock mass characterization, stability of underground openings, pit wall stability, ground control, numerical modelling, and instrumentation. Over the years Mr. Turichshev worked on many types of assignments, ranging from practical hands-on tasks at operational mines to PFS/FS studies to conceptual research and development work. His international experience includes projects in Canada, the USA, South America, Australia, Europe, Russia, and Central Asia. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. degree at the University of Toronto, Canada.
Complex Mining Problems Mining at Depth - High Stress Q Potential infrastructure risk Calibration of seismic activity Rock burst forensics We can help you resolve rock mechanics problems you may be having, like falls of ground, rockbursting, support failure, high stresses or excessive movements.
Mining Method & Sequencing Mining Method Selection We can help you select and optimize mining methods. We can help improve backfill types and adjust binder content to save you money. Sequencing Identification of potential problems with mine sequence We can help you develop the best extraction sequence.
Rock Mechanics & Support Design Large Openings at Depth We can help you decide on the most appropriate support systems to use. We do annual reviews of rock mechanics and mine plans to satisfy regulatory requirements.
Drilling & Blasting Minimizing Blast-Induced Damage Out of sequence detonations occurring near the back of the blast We can provide blasting audits and assist with improving final wall stability by minimizing blast induced damage on open pit walls. Pre-Conditioning and Destress Blasting We can assist with the design of destress blasting or pre-conditioning of highly stressed orebodies.
Fragment Flow Analysis of Fragmented Flow With the use of PFC3D, Itasca can analyse flow of fragmented material, assisting in the design of new and evaluation of existing silos, crushers, transfer stations.
