2 Mineral Resources MEGHALAYA Coal and limestone are the only major minerals mined in the State. Coal occurs in Mikir Hills, Khasi Hills, Jaintia Hills and Garo Hills districts. Resources of limestone occur in West Garo Hills, East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills districts. Other mineral occurrences are apatite in Jaintia Hills district; china clay in East Garo Hills & West Garo Hills, Jaintia Hills & East Khasi Hills districts; copper, lead-zinc, silver and titanium minerals in East Khasi Hills district; felspar and rock phosphate in East Garo Hills & Jaintia Hills districts; fireclay in East Khasi Hills & West Garo Hills districts; granite in West Khasi Hills district; iron ore (magnetite) in East Garo Hills district; quartz and silica sand in East Garo Hills, West Garo Hills & East Khasi Hills districts; and sillimanite in West Khasi Hills district (Table -1). The various coalfields and their reserves/ resources in the State are given in Table-2. Exploration & Development Details of exploration activities conducted by GSI & various agencies during are furnished in Table - 3. Production The value of mineral production in Meghalaya at ` 4033 crore in was 2% higher as compared to that in the previous year. About 94% of the total value of mineral production was accrued from coal during the year under review, whereas the remaining was contributed by limestone baring a negligible share of minor minerals. Meghalaya is an important coal producer of the country. The production of coal is spread over in Jantia Hills, Garo Hills, East khasi Hills and West Khasi Hills areas. The entire production is of ungraded coal mined from the large number of small scale mines operated mostly by the local tribal in unorganised private sector. Therefore, number of coal mines for the state is not available (the mine indicated in the table for second previous years was only a represention of production unit). (Table - 4). The value of production of minor minerals was estimated at ` 721 lakh for the year There were 14 reporting mines (of limestone) in both the years. The index of mineral production in Meghalaya (base =100) was in as compared to112.5 in the previous year. Mineral-based Industry The present status of each mineral-based industry is not readily available. However, the important large and medium-scale mineral-based industries in the organised sector in the State are given in Table - 5. The litho-units exposed in the area are granite gneiss, banded gneiss, granite, charnockite and metanorite. Lateritised metanorite body with bands of titaniferousvanadiferous magnetite having a strike length of 1800 m and width of 300 m was delineated NW of Moulih village. The analytical results of 26 samples show Fe 2 O 3 between 6.82% and 30.96%, TiO 2 between 1.86% and 4.3%, vanadium up to 1398 ppm, Cu up to 556 ppm and zirconium up to 1802 ppm. The other two metanorite bodies were also identified and delineated in the northern part of the mapped area. These bodies are 200 m & 600 m in width and 1500 m & 900 m in length and are associated with magnetite band (2 mm to 4 mm). Samples have been collected from these bodies. Analytical results are awaited. EPMA study indicated presence of amphibole, pyroxene, plagioclase, titaniferous-vanadiferous magnetite, ilmenite, pyrite, pentlandite and chalcopyrite within these metanorite bodies. Prospecting stage investigation (G-3) was carried out to explore limestone resources in the peripheral area of the Litang valley limestone deposit. Geologically, the area exposes the middle Tertiary sedimentary sequence comprising Kopili and Shella formations of Middle to Upper Eocene age and recent to sub recent alluvium. The Sheila Formation is represented by nummulitic limestone and the Kopili Formation by shale and ferruginous nummulitic argillaceous limestone/marl. A total of m drilling has been carried out in two boreholes JNLK-1 & 2. The borehole JNLK-1 intersected m thick limestone between 6.84 m to m depth. Analytical results of 7 grab samples collected from the limestone ridge show an average CaO 50.75%, Fe 2 O %, MgO 0.81% and SiO %. The analytical data indicate chemical grade of limestone. The main lithounits observed in the area are Upper Sylhet limestone of Sheila Formation and splintery shale of Kopli Formation. A total of m drilling has been carried out in two boreholes ISBH-1 & 2. Both the boreholes intersected boulders of limestone. Reconnaissance stage investigation (G-4) was carried out to evaluate potentiality of REE in Nongpoh granite and to locate mafic/lamprophyre/ lamproite rock around lineament intersections and mineralised zones along the contact of granite and Precambrian gneiss. Lithounits observed in the area include sillimanite-biotite gneiss, granite gneiss, diorite gneiss of Precambrian Gneissic Complex, mafic rock/lamprophyre(?), dioritegranodiorite, porphyritic granite and nonporphyritic granite of Nongpoh pluton. Disseminated grains of pyrite and chalcopyrite are observed in gneisses, diorite/ granodiorite, mafic intrusive rock, porphyritic granite, quartz and pegmatite veins. Scheelite grains have been identified by EPMA study in garnet-epidote rock. Analytical results of 8 SSS show REE value ranging between 226 and 2984 ppm, 9 samples of porphyritic granite show value between 562 and 980 ppm and 6 samples of non-porphyritic granite show value between 578 and 2148 ppm. Two granite samples yield REE value 1803 and 2148 ppm have visible spindleshaped sphene (titanite) and allanite in hand specimen. A total of 483 nos. primary core samples for 6 redicals and 37 nos. composite samples were analysed by 11 radicals. A total of million tonnes of net insitu limestone resources with average grade of 2.27%. SiO 2, 50.79% CaO, 1.57% MgO, 0.95% Al 2 O, 1.17% Fe 2 O 3 and 41.57% LOI were estimated and placed under 332 & 333 categories of UNFC. 11-5
