AND EUDORELLA MENZIESI N.SP. A collection of Cumaceans specimens of genus Eudorella collected by the "Vema" R/V (expeditions 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18) - was sent by Prof. Robert Menzies from the Lamont Geological Observatory to Prof. dr. Mihai B&CCSCU who was kindly put it at my disposal. MATERIAL AND RESULTS This material mostly originates in the waters of southern Atlantic (16 of the 30 stations), the eastern and southern coasts of Argentina (st. 1, 2, 16, 18-26), the islands South Georgia (st. 3) and South Shetland (st. 17), Uruguay (st. 27), the Canadian coasts (st. 10, 12, 13, 20,29) and Greenland (st. 11) of northern Atlantic; as well as in the eastern waters of the Pacific, the coasts of Panama (st. 4, 5, 6, 9), Peru (st. 7 and 8) and Chile (st. 14, 15,30) (Tab. 1) from m deep. It was collected from to Studying this material, I could identify 11 species, two of which are new to science, as follows: 1. Eudorella baceecui asp. (Fig. 1 A-D) Material. Holotype : 1 adult Q, deposited at the "Grigore Antipa" Natural History Museum in the Crustacean collection, under no. 623, not dissected, in 70% ethylic alcohol; type locality : Pacific Ocean, south Panama Gulf, st. V15-34; 07 30'N-79008'W, depth unknown, 14.XI.1958, b'vema" R/V.

2 876 IORGU PETRESCU Diagnosis. Carapace dorsally shows a serrate 11-denticulated ridge with fine hairs; the first denticle is stronger. Derivatio nominis. The spccies is dedicated to Prof. dr. Mihai Blicescu, the former Director of the "Grigore Antipa" Natural History Museum, as a sign of homage. Description of the female (Fig. 1 A-D). Body elongate, hairy, integument smooth. Body length mm. Carapace (Fig. 1 A) about 115 of the total body length; the height of the carapace represents approximately 314 of its length. Dorsal margin with a serrate ridge armed with fine hairs and made up of 11 denticles, the first of which is stronger. The upper side of the anterior margin of carapace (Fig. 1 B) is armed with long setae and four spines between the dorsal efferent orifice and the base of antennule. Under the antennule, the anterior margin shows a little serration and three fine excavations. Between the first and the second excavation, a dentiform prolongation appears from under the carapace. The antero-lateral angle is slightly prominent, a denticle is projected beyond the upper serration. Under it, the carapace is widely and strongly serrate up to near the lower point of the carapace. Pleon (Fig. 1 A). A pair of relatively short setae are projected from the posterior end of pleonite five. Antennule (Fig. 1 D) The first article of peduncle is dilated, the second and the third are approximately equal. The main flagellum is three-articulated, the first article bearing pairs of long setae on its upper side. The only article of the accessory flagellum is shorter than the first article of the main flagellum. Uropods (Fig. 1 C). Uropodal peduncle, shorter than exopodite (about 315 of its length) and almost equal to telson. It is armed with a seta on the outer margin and five spines, on the inner one. Distal article of endopodite, approximately 116 of the proximal article length. The first article with 11 short spines on the inner side and five long setae (one plumose) on the outer side. The second article provided with three short spines on the inner side and one, on the outer side. Its end has a long spine with a long, plumose seta. Exopodite, a little shorter than the first article of the endopodite, the proximal article with three short setae and the distal one, provided on ita outer side with three spines, and three shorter setae ; on the end and the inner side of the distal article, one can see ten long plumose setae. Male unknown. Remarks. This is the first record of an Eudorella species with a dorsal serration, a character common only to the genera Leucon and Eudorellopsis of family Leuconidae (J o n e s, 1957 a, b, 1963,1971, 1976). But, according to the exopodite of its uropods, shorter than endopodite, as well as to the general appearence of carapace, of pereopods and uropods, this species belongs to genus Eudorella. 2. Eudorella difficilis Blake, 1929 This is a new record in the Pacific (Peru), from 5522 m, deeper than ever known in the Atlantic (B 1 zr k c, 1929, I3 I c e: s c n, 1988) (st. V15-73) (Tab. 1).

6 380 IORGU PETRESCU 3. Eudorella emarginata (Krbyer, 1846) (Fig. 2 C, G) The only male specimens originate in the southern Atlantic, the coasts of Argentina, being the first record of this species in the southern hemisphere (st. V17-76). The female specimen of station V16-63 shows a reduced anterior serration, similar to that of E. menziesi, the female from station V16-64, which does not show, however, the rudimentary exopodite of pereopod IV. The antennule and uropods of that specimen are also normal, according to the existing descriptions (S a r s, 1871, 1883, 1900, J o n e s, 1957 a, b, 1976). 4. Eudorella fallax Zimmer, 1909 The species is a new record in northern Atlantic (Newfoundland, Canada, st. V17-120) and in the Pacific (st. V15-24) (Tab. 1) (Z i m me r, 1909, B 5 c e s c u, 1988). 5. Eudorella gracilior Zimmer, 1909 The species is a new record in northern Atlantic (st. V17-120) and in the Pacific (Panama, Chile) (Tab. 1) (Z i m m e r, 1909, B 5 c e s c u, 1988). In the Pacific, it was collected at 5918 m, deeper than it was known before in southern Atlantic. 6. Eudorella hispida, Sars, 1871 The species is a new record in southern Atlantic (B 5 c e s c u, 1988) (Tab. 1). 7. Eudorella menziesi n.sp. (Fig. 2 A, B, D-F) Material. Holotype : 1 subadult 9, deposited at the "Grigore Antipa" Natural History Museum, in the Crustacean collection, under no. 624, not dissected, in 70% ethylic alcohol; type locality : NW Atlantic Ocean, Nova Scotia, Canada, st. V16-64; 46" 53' N-58" 31' W, 448 m deep, 8.1X.1960, "Vema" R/V. Diagnosis. Thc anterior side of the carapace shows a reduced serration, two dents. Antennule has two setae on the basis of main flagellum, exceeding it. The fourth pair of pereopods, with rudimentary two-articulted exopodites. Derivatio nominis. The species is dedicated to the regretted Professor Robert Menzies. Description of the female (Fig. 2 A, B, D-F). Body elongate, with fine hairs. As general appearance, it looks like species Eudorella emarginata (Fig. 2 A). Body length: 7.83 mm. Carapace. Its anterior side shows a reduceil serration, only two dents as compared to the female specilnens of species E. emarginata (six dents) (Fig. 2 C). I noticed a similar reduction in a specimen of E. emarginata of station V16-63, froni the coasts of Canada, Newfoundland (the only similarity). Antennule (Fig. 2 D) with two setae on the basis of main flagellum, exceeding it.

7 Fig. 2 - Eudorella menziesi nap. (female): A - body. lateral view ; B - anterior side of carapace ; D - uropod ; F - antennule ; G - pereopods 111, IV ; Eudorella emarginata (Kroyer, 1846): C - anterior side of carapace; E - telson and uropod.

8 382 IORGU PETRESCU _ -. Pereopods. The fourth pair, with rudimentary two-articulated exopodites (Fig. 2 E) armed with two short setae, which is uncommon to genus Eudorella whose females have exopodites only on pereopods Uropods (Fig. 2 F), not essentially different from those of Eudorella emarginata (Fig. 2 G), showing a more reduced armature of exopodites and endopodites. Male unknown. Remarks. The variability of the serration on the anterior side of carapace needs more study. In the same sample with the new species I also found a female of E. emarginata with a normal serration just like in the other stations. The only exception is represented by the female specimen from the Canadian coasts. Eudorella mensiesi clearly differs from E. emarginata by its antennule and, especially, by the existence of the fourth pair of exopodites of pereopods in the female. 8. Eudorella parvula Hansen, 1920 The species is recorded for the first time in southern Atlantic and in the Pacific. In the latter, it was collected at 5490 m, deeper than it was known before in northern Atlantic (H a n s e n, 1920, B 5 c e s c u, 1988) (Tab. 1). 9. Eudorella similis Calman, 1907 This is the first record of this species in the Pacific (Peru), at 5522 m (deeper than it was known before in the Atlantic - C a 1 m a n, 1907, Zi m m e r, 1908, B 5 c e s c u, 1988) (Tab. 1). 10. Eudorella sordida Zimmer, It is recorded for the first time in the Pacific (Chile), at 562.m, deeper than it was known before in the Atlantic (2 i m m e r, 1909, S t e b b i n g, 1913, B & c e s c u, 1988) (Tab. 1). 11. Eudorella spitabergensis Zimmer, 1926 A single female specimen, collected in the waters of northern Atlantic, Nova Scotia, Canada, at 448 m deep that does not show morphological differences aa compared to the descriptions from the literature (L o m a k i n a, 1958). Remarks. The occurrence of some Eudorella species in new geogaphical areas: nothern and southern Atlantic, eastern Pacific, the coast of Southern America could be explained, in the present stage of study by these species' preference for cold waters and the possibility of their transport with the help of the major ocean currents from the Atlantic and the Pacific (Fig. 3).
