1 James Bay Region, Central Superior Province (Opatica, Opinaca, Nemiscau, and La Grande Subprovinces) Patrick Houle The James Bay region lies in the central Superior Province and contains four geological subprovinces, which are, from north to south, the La Grande, Opinaca, Nemiscau, and Opatica subprovinces. Comprising volcano-plutonic and sedimentary assemblages, these subprovinces are transected by a series of E-W to WNW-ESE and NE-SW-trending shear zones, which are metamorphosed to greenschist facies in their centers, grading to upper amphibolite facies near their margins. These assemblages are intruded by a number of granitoids assigned to various plutonic suites (Moukhsil et al., 2007). The bulk of exploration work was concentrated in the Frotet-Evans (Opatica Subprovince), Lower Eastmain (Opinaca Subprovince), Upper Eastmain (Opinaca Subprovince) and La Grande (La Grande Subprovince) volcano-sedimentary belts. During the year 2006, at least 93 exploration projects were reported (Table 1B) in the James Bay region, up 41% compared to the 66 projects inventoried in In 2006, the main ore deposit types under investigation in this region included lode gold deposits, kimberlite-hosted diamond deposits, volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits, uranium deposits, and to a lesser extent, porphyry Cu-Au deposits associated with felsic intrusions. The James Bay region was subdivided into three areas. These are, from south to north: the Frotet-Evans area, the Eastmain area, and the La Grande area. The most important ongoing projects (Table 1B) will be reviewed and commented upon based on the attention they attracted in Frotet-Evans Area Located in the centre of the Opatica Subprovince, the Frotet-Evans volcano-sedimentary belt (FEVB) is primarily composed of tholeiitic and calc-alkaline volcanic formations. The 250-km-long FEVB is subdivided into four lithotectonic segments, which are, from west to east: 1) Evans-Ouagama, 2) Storm-Evans, 3) Assinica, and 4) Frotet-Troilus. The 13 exploration projects reported in 2006 are largely concentrated in the Frotet-Troilus segment. During the third quarter of 2006, Inmet Mining Corporation commenced development of an access ramp beneath the 87 open pit at the Troilus mine. On the Lessard property (project 12, 1B 7 Figure 1B), located 107 km north of Chibougamau, Landore Resources Ltd confirmed historical resources at the Lessard polymetallic deposit. Moreover, drillhole , targeting a wide gap between previous drillholes, intersected a sulphide breccia zone grading 12.36% Zn, 0.22% Cu, 15.6 g/t Ag, and 0.10 g/t Au over 3.4 m. About 50 km southeast of the Frotet-Troilus segment, Dios Exploration Inc. defined high-priority kimberlite targets based on the results of a low altitude, tightly spaced, heliborne magnetic survey flown, up-ice from known kimberlite indicator mineral dispersal trains, on the Chibouki diamond property (project 11, Figure 1B). About 140 km northeast of Matagami, Nuinsco Resources Ltd drill-tested the nickel deposit on the Lac Rocher property (project 19, Figure 1B), now traced to a vertical depth of 125 m. Drillhole NRL-604 namely intersected 56.2 m grading 1.24% Ni. Eastmain Area The Eastmain area comprises the Lower Eastmain greenstone belt (Lower Eastmain and Middle Eastmain segments) and the Upper Eastmain greenstone belt (Upper Eastmain segment; Monts Otish area). Archean volcano-sedimentary rocks of the Lower Eastmain greenstone belt are assigned to the Eastmain Group. This group is composed of komatiitic to rhyolitic volcanic rocks and a variety of sedimentary rocks. Paragneisses of the Auclair Formation (Nemiscau and Opinaca basins) overlie this assemblage. In the Eastmain area, 60 projects were reported in In the Lower and Middle Eastmain segments, exploration work focused on gold occurrences in metasedimentary units. Diamond exploration projects were largely concentrated in the granitoids and paragneisses that border the Upper Eastmain greenstone belt (Monts Otish area). The James Bay region continues to garner attention for gold, especially near the Opinaca Reservoir. Thus, Goldcorp Inc. continued its definition drilling program on the Roberto gold system on the Eleonore property (project 40, Figure 1B), located near lac Ell, northeast of Opinaca Reservoir, to assess the potential of the deposit and collect additional data for upcoming technical and economic scoping studies. The Roberto system has now been traced over a strike length of 1.9 km and to a vertical depth of 1,300 m, and still remains open in all directions. An initial mineral resource estimate should be released during the first quarter of On the Opinaca property (project 41, Figure 1B) held by Beaufield Resources Inc., drillhole OP intersected 20 m grading 1.1 g/t Au in the Rusty zone. The latter, located about 9 km southwest of Goldcorp s Roberto deposit, is characterized

2 by a quartz stockwork with pyrite and arsenopyrite, hosted in locally sheared and brecciated mafic volcanic rocks strongly altered to tourmaline. South of Eleonore (project 40, Figure 1B), joint venture partners Eastmain Resources Inc., Goldcorp Inc. and Azimut Exploration Inc. reported a grade of 1.49 g/t Au over 16.0 m from a channel sample taken on a new showing called the JT Target, on the Eleonore South JV project (project 47, Figure 1B). The showing is hosted in Roberto-type sedimentary rocks that contain up to 3% disseminated arsenopyrite. Everton Resources Inc. and joint venture partner Azimut Exploration Inc. carried out follow-up exploration along the 1.7-km-long gold-bearing structure that hosts the Inex Zone (3.03 g/t Au over 1.5 m in drillhole OP-06-03) on the Opinaca Block A property (project 49, Figure 1B). Everton and Azimut later defined a 12-km-long gold-bearing corridor trending northeast across the Opinaca B (project 58, Figure 1B) and Wildcat 5 (project 63, Figure 1B) properties. The Claude Target (1.0 g/t Au over 21.5 m in drillhole OP-06-07) and the Manuel Showing (12.01 g/t Au over 4.6 m on surface) represent both ends of the gold corridor. Sirios Resources Inc. and Dios Exploration Inc. announced the discovery of a polymetallic occurrence on the PONTAX property (project 31, Figure 1B). A surface channel sample collected in a felsic pyroclastic unit yielded grades of 821 g/t Ag, 1.31 g/t Au, 0.56% Pb, and 0.18% Zn over 4.36 m. Moreover, the Sirios-Dios joint venture outlined the presence of highquality kimberlite indicator minerals following a till sampling program covering the property. On the Clearwater property (project 55, Figure 1B), about 25 km south of the Eleonore deposit near Rivière Eastmain, Eastmain Resources Inc. extended the D Vein to a vertical depth of 880 m in the Eau Claire gold deposit, in drillhole ER06-56 (8.64 g/t Au over 3.0 m). About 21 km west of the Eau Claire deposit held by Eastmain Resources Inc., Arianne Resources Inc. encountered gold in two different settings in drillholes on the Opinaca property (project 33, Figure 1B). First, an important gold-bearing zone was defined along the contact between volcanic and sedimentary rocks. Within this zone, sedimentary rocks hosting gold-bearing quartz veins yielded assays up to g/t Au over 2.6 m in drillhole OPI Second, sedimentary rocks with fine-grained pyrite yielded assays of 3.5 g/t Au over 3.2 m in drillhole OPI The Archean Upper Eastmain volcano-sedimentary belt, known for its gold, base metal, and PGE potential, remains a popular target area for diamond exploration. North of the Monts Otish, Ashton Mining of Canada Inc. and SOQUEM Inc. began mining a bulk sample of at least 10,000 tonnes of kimberlitic material, by surface trenching at Renard 4 (2,400 tonnes), and by underground mining methods via a ramp at Renard 3 (1,000 tonnes) on the Foxtrot property (project 1, Figure 1B). During the fall, the partners built a dense media separation facility onsite to process ore extracted towards the end of The joint venture expects to recover at least 6,000 carats of diamonds from the bulk sample. In the same area, less than 10 km southwest of the Renard cluster, Majescor Resources Inc. and its partner Forest Gate Resources Inc. discovered a new kimberlite boulder train on the Portage property (project 2, Figure 1B). Furthermore, based on the results of the latest drilling campaign, the strike length of the Remick kimberlitic dyke currently stands at nearly 1.5 km. About 50 km west of the former Eastmain gold mine, recent work by Western Troy Capital Resources Inc. confirmed the strike extent of the South Zone over at least 500 m, and identified 880,000 tonnes of inferred mineral resources grading 0.84% Cu and 0.22% Mo on the Windy-1 property (MacLeod Lake) (project 9, Figure 1B). Moreover, drillholes in the northeastern part of the property intersected wide intervals strongly altered to chlorite, epidote, calcite and hematite, with copper, molybdenum and gold grades such as 0.97% Cu, 0.09% Mo, and g/t Au over 0.6 m in drillhole ML In the sedimentary Otish Basin, Strateco Resources Inc. reported several uraniferous drill intercepts in the AM-15 zone, including 3.27% U 3 O 8 over 2.3 m (drillhole MT-06-9), 1.12% U 3 O 8 over 10.5 m (drillhole MT-06-10), and 0.99% U 3 O 8 over 6.6 m (drillhole MT-06-11) on the Matoush property (project 6, Figure 1B). Uranium concentrations were encountered over at least 160 m lateral extent and to a vertical depth of 250 to 300 m, within a vertical fault that has been traced over a strike length of about 7 km. La Grande Area The La Grande area comprises three major Archean assemblages, Proterozoic dykes, and a series of grabens infilled with siliciclastic sediments of the Paleoproterozoic Sakami Formation. Archean assemblages include the Bienville plutonic Subprovince to the northwest, the La Grande volcano-plutonic Subprovince in the centre, and the metasedimentary and plutonic Opinaca Subprovince to the southeast. Part of the La Grande Subprovince, the La Grande volcano-sedimentary belt (LGVB) hosts the vast majority of known mineral occurrences in this subprovince. Parallel to the 8

3 Wemindji-Caniapiscau structural zone, the LGVB is mainly composed of mafic to felsic volcanic rocks interbedded with metasedimentary rocks and oxide-facies or magnetite iron formations. Komatiitic flows and ultramafic intrusions are also present and locally host Ni-Cu±PGE and Cr occurrences. A total of 20 exploration projects were reported in the La Grande area in Virginia Mines Inc. and its partner Breakwater Resources Ltd reported drilling results from the Coulon property (project 86, Figure 1B), located 15 km north of Fontanges airport. Drillhole CN encountered a mineralized interval grading 8.96% Zn, 1.76% Cu, g/t Ag, 0.46% Pb, and 0.16 g/t Au over m.
