The United Nations predicts that by 2050 this proportion will increase to 66%. This course aims to introduce students to the anthropological study of cities by familiarizing them with a range of theoretical concepts, methodological techniques, and analysis of cities and urban life. We begin with an examination of early theoretical influences on the study of cities and the identification of urban areas as sites of investigation. This is followed by an exploration of how the material and social environment of the city is shaped through different modes of governance and planning. We continue to study the formation of urban centers by attending to the relationship between cities, modernity, and development. In the second part of the class we focus on how larger historical, political, and economic processes work to (re)produce inequalities between and within cities. Finally, we end the course by examining how such inequalities impact individuals and are actively contested and negotiated in everyday urban life. This is a multi-disciplinary course that will draw upon a range of sources from anthropology, political science, urban studies, geography, and history. The course has been designed to encourage students to read original theoretical sources and ethnographies. Consequently, the reading list includes excerpts from canonical texts as well as more recent ethnographic studies. Course content also includes ethnographic films. Ethnographic cases have been drawn from across the world but with a particular 1

2 emphasis on South Asia. Objectives By the end of the course you will be familiar with: Attain familiarity with key theoretical approaches to understanding and studying urban issues. Understand the ways in which the material environment of cities both shapes and is shaped by socio-political and economic processes. Analyze how urban life and forms are structured through global and local inequalities along lines of income, class, ethnicity, religion, and gender. Think critically about urban policies. Course Evaluation Attendance: 5% Class participation: 10% Pop quizzes: 20% Exam 1 (midterm): 20% Exam 2 (Non-comprehensive final): 20% Final Essay: 25% (Presentation- 5% Paper 20%) Attendance is mandatory. Half points will be deducted for late arrival or early departure. All students are expected to come to class prepared by doing the assigned readings. There will be a total of 10 quizzes. 2 quizzes will be dropped. Quizzes will include multiple choice questions and/or short questions. There will be two exams. The second exam will only include the material covered after the midterm exam. Exams will include short questions and essay questions. The final essay will be based on an original research project or mini-ethnography. Possible topics will be introduced early in the course. Students are expected to discuss appropriate topics with me before starting their research. Research findings will also be presented to the class at the end of the course.
