3 Universal Testing Services Page OBJECTIVE The objective of this monitoring is to measure the content of volatile organic compound at Real Estate & Housing Developer s Association which located in Kelana Jaya, Selangor Darul Ehsan. Monitoring was conducted at identified locations as per advice and the sampling points were identified by Mr. Jason Kuan from Arch Flash Marketing (M) Sdn Bhd. Classifications of VOCs When discussing indoor environments, all organic chemical compounds that can volatize under normal indoor atmospheric conditions of temperature and pressure are VOCs. While the demarcation line between the Very Volatile Organic Compound (VVOC), Volatile Organic Compound (VOC), and Semivolatile Organic Compound (SVOC) classifications is somewhat arbitrary, it does show the wide range of volatility among organic compounds. The three classifications are all important to indoor air, and are all considered to fall within the broad definition of indoor volatile organic compounds. Other than volatility (or boiling point) no other criteria are used to define VOCs indoors. 2.0 INTRODUCTION Volatile organic compounds (VOC) means any compound of carbon, excluding carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, carbonic acid, metallic carbides or carbonates, and ammonium carbonate, which participates in atmospheric photochemical reactions, except those designated by EPA as having negligible photochemical reactivity2. Volatile organic compounds, or VOCs are organic chemical compounds whose composition makes it possible for them to evaporate under normal indoor atmospheric conditions of temperature and pressure3. This is the general definition of VOCs that is used in the scientific literature, and is consistent with the definition used for indoor air quality. Since the volatility4 of a compound is generally higher the lower its boiling point temperature, the volatility of organic compounds are sometimes defined and classified by their boiling points. For example, the European Union uses the boiling point, rather than its volatility in its definition of VOCs. A VOC is any organic compound having an initial boiling point less than or equal to 250 C measured at a standard atmospheric pressure of kpa. VOCs are sometimes categorized by the ease they will be emitted. For example, the World Health Organization (WHO) categorizes indoor organic pollutants as very volatile, volatile, and semi-volatile. The higher the volatility (lower the boiling point), the more likely the compound will be emitted from a product or surface into the air.

4 Universal Testing Services Page 4 Very volatile organic compounds (VVOCs) are so volatile that they are difficult to measure and are found almost entirely as gases in the air rather than in materials or on surfaces. The least volatile compounds (SVOCs) found in air constitute a far smaller fraction of the total present indoors while the majority will be in solids or liquids that contain them or on surfaces including dust, furnishings, and building materials. The monitoring was conducted on 16 th April 2012, 4 th May 2012, 6 th June 2012 and 26 th July A) VOC Monitoring conducted at identified locations as listed below: Sampling Point/ Description Marking 1. 5 Universal Testing Services Page METHODOLOGY 3.1 General Generally, the samples were collected by drawing the air from the selected points using calibrated YESAIR pump. 3.2 Sampling Analysis References Parameter and References Method i. Monitoring of Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) YESAIR 8 calibrated sampling pump will be located at identified locations as shown by person in-charge from Arch Flash Marketing (M) Sdn Bhd. Sampling pump turned ON for 15 minutes for each identified points per session. Sampling carried out at Morning, Afternoon and Evening duration to represent the actual condition for normal working hours.

14 Universal Testing Services Page INFERENCE The analysis results obtained shows that the VOCs level at all the points were found to be below the Industry Code of Practice on Indoor Air Quality 2010, Department of Occupational Safety and Health, Ministry of Human Resource Malaysia which 3 parts per million. Generally, the VOCs detected obviously found to be reducing every month. Sampling was carried out for four stages where are first sampling (April 12) was carried out before the chemical application in the building. The next three sampling were carried out after chemical applied in the building. May 12, June 12 and July 12 sampling results showed that, the VOCs level reducing slowly and at a time where it is completely not detected on the last sampling. Prepared By:
