Field Work Stránská skála (Stránská rock) Worksheet Names: Department of Geography, Faculty of Education, Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic 1

Duration: 1 hour preparation (searching for information about the location, planning of transportation to the place, the preparation of aids) 3 hours of field work 1 hour for completion of tasks Methods and forms used: Group work under the supervision of a teacher Aims of the activity: Evaluate uniqueness of the locality in terms of geological development, localize the trigonometric point, measure the height of the cliff, create a topographical sketch of the Zetor park, compare localisation factors for the construction of the old industrial park (Zetor) and new industrial park (Černovická terrace), argue in favour for / against the construction of new industrial parks, propose a panel of an educational trail for the Stránská rock, construct an altitude profile of the route. Aids: pen / pencil, crayons, worksheet, protractor/clinometer, ruler, calculator, camera, GPS Motivational text: Field work can take place even at locations close to the school, meaning in the city. Stránská rock is a suitable place for activities related to cartography as well as physical and economic geography. Note: You are working at an elevated location. Pay attention to the safety of your movement. Department of Geography, Faculty of Education, Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic 2

WORK WITH PC 1. Search the internet for basic information about Stránská rock: - What was the geological evolution of the Stránská rock? - When Stránská rock was first settled and how can it be proven? - What was the role of Stránská rock during the WWII? - Why is Stránská rock important nowadays? Department of Geography, Faculty of Education, Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic 3

FIELD WORK You are on the top Stránská rock. First, examine the entire site. Then find a place with a good view of the Zetor industrial park (towards the north). 1. Draw a topographical sketch of the Zetor industrial park into the space below. Department of Geography, Faculty of Education, Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic 4

2. Measure the height of the cliff below the trigonometric point using two different methods. Altitude in metres (1):... The measurement procedure:. Altitude in metres (2):... The measurement procedure:. Locate as closely as possible the position (coordinates) and altitude of the trigonometric point. What is the trigonometric point used for? Department of Geography, Faculty of Education, Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic 5

3. Compare the location factors for the development of old industrial park (complex of Zetor) and a newly built industrial park (Černovická terrace). Old industrial park (Zetor) Newly built industrial park (Černovická terasa) Department of Geography, Faculty of Education, Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic 6

4. After survey of the Stránská rock area propose a tourist informational panel that will be placed on the top of Stránská rock. Place for your informational panel: Department of Geography, Faculty of Education, Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic 7

5. Put yourself in a place of Greenpeace member fighting against the expansion of the existing industrial park of Černovická Terrace. Think of some arguments against the further expansion of the industrial park. 6. To the attached map, draw the path that you used to get to the top of Stránská rock and construct its altitude profile.
