1 YEAR 9 (13+) SCHOLARSHIP February 2014 for entry in September 2014 GENERAL PAPER Your Name: Your School: Time allowed: 1 hour 15 minutes (including 5 minutes reading time) Equipment needed: Map and photograph inserts, pen, pencil, lined paper, and eraser. Information for candidates: 1. Write your name and school on this page. 2. Write your answers on the separate paper provided. Please put your name on all the sheets of paper you use. 3. There are two parts to this paper (Geography and History). Answer both parts, beginning each part on a separate piece of paper. 4. The paper will be marked out of 60. The Geography part is worth 30 marks and the History paper is worth 30 marks. Marks available are shown in square brackets [ ]. 5. A summary of marks and time available for the various sections is shown overleaf.
2 STRUCTURE OF PAPER The paper will begin with 5 minutes reading time, during which you are not permitted to write or mark your paper. PART 1: GEOGRAPHY Total time: 35 minutes Total marks: 30 Section A: Section B: 15 marks - Answer all parts of the question in this section. The recommended time for the section is 15 minutes. 15 marks - Answer one question in this section. The recommended time for the section is 20 minutes. PART 2: HISTORY Total time: 35 minutes Total marks: 30 Answer one question from this section.
3 PART 1 GEOGRAPHY Section A (Map skills) Answer all parts of the question in this section. The section is worth 15 marks and the recommended time for the section is 15 minutes. 1. 6 d) Look at the straight part of the Riviere Noire road from the southern edge of the map to the bend at at the settlement at Bambous. (i) Measure the distance along the straight part of the road. 7 Section B Answer either question 1 or 2 in this section. Each question is worth 15 marks and the recommended time for the section is 20 minutes. 1. Coasts a) Study Photograph A (Insert) which shows an area of coastline. (i) Identify the coastal landform shown by Photograph A. To do so you should complete the sentences below by using arrows to match the correct beginnings and endings. Explain the impact of any one idea or invention on a period of History you have studied. 3. The main cause of war is competition for scarce resources. How far do you agree? You may write about one war, or several wars. 4. It is impossible to write an accurate history of the lives of ordinary people who lived before the twentieth century. How far do you agree?
