Environment and Planning A, 2002, 34 : The development of Western economic geography and its implications f or geographers on both sides of the Taiwan Strait Laurence MA (Department of Geography and Planning, University of Akron, Akron, Ohio, USA) Abstract : Since t he 1950s, Western economic geography has undergone major paradigmatic t ransformations, influenced in part by instit utional and technical changes in global economic production. Mainst ream economic geography has wit nessed major epistemological shift s away from earlier mere description to logical positivism, and f rom meta2t heorization aiming at sci2 entific prediction to place2 and region2centered analysis for hermeneutic understanding. A new economic geography has appeared characterized by institutionalism, cultural turn and plural2 ism. Geographers on bot h sides of t he Taiwan St rait have not had significant interactions wit h mainstream economic geography. Not only should we be familiar with the theories of main2 stream economic geography, we should also critique them and modify them using the findings of our fieldwork conducted on t he Chinese mainland and in Taiwan. We should establish our own intellect ual identity and internationalize our scholarship. Key words :Western geography ; institutional turn ; cultural turn ; mainstream economic geogra2 phy ; new economic geography
