NOTE: 1. State law requires approved safety goggles be worn at all times in the laboratory. If you do not wear approved safety goggles, you will not be permitted to attend lab. 2. If you should happen to miss a lab, try to make it up the very same week if possible. (Labs are scheduled for Monday or as specified in the schedule for CHEM 1112.) 3. Arrive at lab on time. Your lab assistant will deduct 20 points from your lab grade for arriving late. 4. Always clean up your lab area before leaving the lab; your grade will suffer if you leave a messy lab space. 5. Be careful with your lab equipment. You will be charged for broken or missing equipment. 6. If you lose your lab key or do not return it at the end of the semester, you will be charged $15.00 or more by the University to cover the expense of changing the lock. 7. If you do not check out of lab at the end of the semester, you will be charged $25.00 or more by the University. Student Learner Outcomes: At the successful completion of this course, you will demonstrate an understanding of each of the key chemical principles (identified with bold face font in the Lecture Schedule) by successfully completing three intermittent assessment exams and a final assessment exam. When you complete this course you should think differently about the world you live in because of your understanding of the molecular interactions that exist beneath everything around you. Policies Disability Statement (see pages 2 and 11 of the Student Handbook): Students with disabilities, including learning disabilities, who wish to request accommodations in class should register with the Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) early in the semester so that appropriate arrangements may be made. In accordance with federal laws, a student requesting special accommodations must provide documentation for the disability to the SSD coordinator. Academic Misconduct Statement (see page 23, section 100 of the Student Handbook): You are expected to practice academic honesty in every aspect of this course and all other courses. Make sure you are familiar with your Student handbook, especially the section on academic misconduct. Students who engage in academic misconduct are subject to university disciplinary procedures. Forms of academic dishonesty: 1) Cheating: deception in which a student misrepresents that he/she has mastered information on an academic exercise that he/she has not mastered; giving or receiving aid unauthorized by the instructor on assignments or assessment examinations. 2) Academic misconduct: tampering with grades or taking part in obtaining or distributing any part of a scheduled test. 3) Fabrication: use of invented information or falsified research. 4) Plagiarism: unacknowledged quotation and/or paraphrase of someone else s words, ideas, or data as one s own in work submitted for credit. Failure to identify information or essays from the Internet and submitting them as one s own work also constitutes plagiarism. Nonacademic misconduct (see page 23, section 100 of the Student Handbook): The university respects the rights of instructors to teach and students to learn. Maintenance of these rights requires campus conditions that do not impede their exercise. Campus behavior that interferes with either 1) The instructors s ability to conduct the class 2) The inability of other students to profit from the instructional program, or 3) Campus behavior that interferes with the rights of others will not be tolerated. An individual engaging in such disruptive behavior may be subject to disciplinary action. Such incidents will be adjudicated by the Dean of Students under nonacademic procedures. Sexual misconduct (see page 23, section 200 of the Student Handbook):

4 Sexual harassment of students and employers at Texas A&M University-Kingsville is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Any member of the university community violating this policy will be subject to disciplinary action. Drop Policy: Senate Bill 1231, passed by the Texas legislature in 2007, limits the number of drops (six) that undergraduate students may accrue without a punitive grade. Undergraduates completing a high school program and enrolling in an institution of higher education prior to fall 2007 are exempt. Undergraduate students completing a high school program and enrolling in an institution of higher education for the first time on or after the fall semester 2007 are subject to the law. (See Catalog, pp. 57+). Safety: Every student is required to review the on-line version of Chemical Hygiene Plan for A&M University and sign an affidavit to that effect. Certain clothing will not be allowed in the lab (i.e., open toe shoes, short shorts or skirts, and long hair must be pulled back.) Goggles must be worn during certain laboratory exercises. The Lab Assistant will announce when they are needed. Students coming to lab without proper clothing or materials will NOT be allowed to attend lab and will receive a zero for that particular lab quiz. Failure to follow these safety guidelines may result in expulsion for the lab and a grade of F. Course policies * HOMEWORK AND IN CLASS EXERCISES POLICY: Late homework will be discounted 50% per day late. A zero will be recorded for all missed in class exercises. All problems must be neatly and systematically set up and work shown; answers must be correctly expressed and labeled. ** LAB CREDIT POLICY: A student repeating this course may be exempted from laboratory if he or she can produce evidence of having achieved at least an 80 lab average. This must be done during the first week of the semester. ***EXAM POLICIES: Each major exam and the final will be graded on the basis of 200 points. No individual makeup assessment exams are offered for Assessment Exams 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 (for whatever reason). After assessment exam 5, the lowest assessment exam score will be dropped and only the highest 3 assessment exam scores will count toward your accumulated point total. The final exam grade cannot be dropped. Students must do their own work on exams. Cheating will result in no credit for an exam or an F in the course. Students are assigned seats in which to take all major exams and the final. Students must sit in assigned seats to receive credit for exams. Any requests or exam corrections must be made within 72 hours (3 days) of its return. All unavoidable absences must be reported before the period missed by calling and subsequently presenting an authorized written statement stating the cause of absence. Caps, hats and/or sunglasses are not to be worn during exams Attendance Policy: All unavoidable absences must be reported before the period missed by calling or and subsequently presenting an authorized written statement stating the cause of absence. Attendance to all class lectures is not only mandatory but also an obligation for a comprehensive understanding of the chemical principles of Chemistry Class and your attendance begin "at the top of the hour!". Daily class attendance will be recorded and evaluated. Persistent absences, ( > 6). will be cause for being dropped from the course. Classroom Etiquette Policies: (a) The use of tobacco of any form, cellular phones, walkmans, and any other electronic equipment are prohibited from operation in lecture without prior approval of the instructor. (b) Falling asleep during the lecture period is considered rude and disrespectful to peers and the instructor! (c) Professional character and respect and consideration for others are required at all times. Abusive disregard of these policies will result in dismissal from Chemistry If you miss eight classes without an authorsed excuse you will be droppped from this course. This Chemistry 1312, Fall 2017 syllabus is intended to be informational and not contractual. The instructor reserves the right to amend, alter, change, delete, or modify the syllabus with notice (announced during the lecture session) in any manner that is deemed necessary and in the best interest of the Department of Chemistry and Texas A&M University-Kingsville.
