Skill 1: Determine the type of equation Evidence: N 2(g) + O 2(g) NO 2(g) Skill 2: Balancing Equations. Balance the equation above using the lowest whole number ratios. Skill 3: Missing Mass In the reaction above 10 g of N 2 reacts to produce 25 g of NO 2. How many grams of O 2 reacted? Skill 4: Empirical Formulas Explain why NO 2 is a molecular and empirical formula. Skill 5: Mole to Mole Ratios Write the mole ratios of NO 2 to O 2 in fraction form. PURPOSE: To observe and analyze different types of chemical reactions. MATERIALS: Solid Fe, S, Solutions of HCl, Na 2CO 3, CaCl 2 Pipettes for each solution, scoopula for iron Demo Procedure Synthesis Reaction 1. Watch your teacher combine iron filings and sulfur. 2 Lab Procedure and Data Single Replacement Reactions: 1. Iron (Fe) and Hydrochloric Acid (HCl): Place a small sample of iron filings (grain of rice) in a test tube. Add approximately.5 ml (half a dropper) of 1 M HCl. Caution: hydrochloric acid is potentially dangerous is on skin or eyes. Regents Review A 1.00-mole sample of glucose, C 6H 12O 6, completely reacts with oxygen, as represented by the balanced equation below. C 6H 12O 6(s) + 6O 2(g) 6CO 2(g) + 6H 2O(l) + energy 5. Write the empirical formula for glucose. [1] Baking soda, NaHCO 3, can be commercially produced during a series of chemical reactions called the Solvay process. In this process, NH 3(aq), NaCl(aq), and other chemicals are used to produce NaHCO3(s) and NH 4Cl(aq). To reduce production costs, NH 3(aq) is recovered from NH 4Cl(aq) through a different series of reactions. This series of reactions can be summarized by the overall reaction represented by the unbalanced equation below. NH 4Cl(aq) + CaO(s) NH 3(aq) + H 2O(l) + CaCl 2(aq) 6. Balance the equation for the overall reaction used to recover NH3(aq), using the smallest wholenumber coefficients. [1]

Clean-up Crew: Responsible for rinsing out graduated cylinders and test tubes at appropriate times. Data Recorder: Responsible for initially writing down all observations and measurements.
