2 Refractometer RA-520N/RA-500N Built-in temperature control High performance wide range Introduction The RA-520N/RA-500N determines the refractive index of a liquid sample by detecting critical angle of optical deflection from the sample and prism. Refractometry is now commonly used for quality control in foods and beverage industries. Measurement of refractive index by RA-520N ranges from 1.32 to 1.58 with resolution while RA-500N from 1.32 to 1.70 with resolution. Both models reproduce instrumental precision check and its record by printout to GLP compliance. They are designed and manufactured in full conformance to ISO standard and CE marking both EMI and LVD requirements. 3 RA-520N/RA-500N/RA-410 Application of Refractometer RA-520N, RA-500N 1) Petroleum products Measurement of refractive index is applied in quality control of light oil, kerosene, gasoline, etc., and also applied to quality check in chemical process of cyclohexene, styrene, benzene, toluene or xylene. 2) Fats and oil Edible oils like soybean oil, cotton oil, sesame oil, olive oil, palm oil, coconut oil, etc. are quality controlled by measuring refractive index at 25¼C 3) Perfume and pharmaceutical products Perfume and material for pharmaceutical products are expensive by weight, and purity of those materials is critical to their cost. Thus, the purity is determined by measuring refractive index, which requires a small amount of sample, being advantageous feature of Refractometer. 4) Fruits The most important factor in quality determination of fruits other than shape, color or taste is the degree of fructose in the apple, orange, grape, pear, melon, etc. Refractometry is applied not only in quality control but determines their harvest season. 5) Honey and jam Production control or quality determination of honey, jam, marmalade, etc. is performed by Refractometer or Brix meter. Refractometry is also applied to quality check of raw materials for starch syrup and liquid sugar in foods industry. 6) Beverages Soft drinks including soda and fruits juice contain not only sucrose but other substances like flavor, citric acid, pectin, etc. All of these ingredients are collectively called "Solid", and its quality or production control is determined by Brix. 7) Cooking sauce Quality of liquid sauce like steak sauce, soy sauce, ketchup or dressings depends on inspecting its concentration of raw material as well as proportion of ingredients in process. Key factor for these checks is the Solid portion determined by Refractometer or by Brix meter. 8) Quenching oil, roll oil, cutting oil, etc. To check concentration of these cooling oils is critical for improving work efficiency and quality of mechanically processed products. Quality and production control are perfectly managed by input of relation of refractive index and concentration of these oils. 9) Anti-freeze fluid Anti-freeze fluid used in the automobile or other combustion engines consists mainly of ethylene glycol or propylene glycol. The higher concentration of the fluid, the less likely the engine is frozen in winter time. Needless to say, to control the concentration of such fluid is very important in freezing cold area. 10) Production of electronic parts Chemical liquids used in production line for electronic parts need severe quality check by refractometry of their concentration, which leads to the quality of finished products. 11) Other applications Decontaminating chemical like ethyl alcohol or disinfectant like hydrogen peroxide, etc. Especially solution used in food processing requires control of concentration to a constant level, which is easily and precisely performed by Refractometer with its built-in conversion processor. Concentration conversion Calibration curve is pre-determined and plotted, using a plural number of liquid of which concentration is known. When refractive index of a sample of which concentration is unknown is measured, the results are converted to unit like % or ppm. 4 RA-520N Principle of Measurement of Refractive index Sample Any visible light changes its direction when it passes a material with higher refractive index (RI) to that with lower refractive index. As the incident ray b increases, the refractive angle a will increase in accordance with the Snell's Law, and when the refractive angle a reaches the critical angle (=90û), total refraction will occur at the boundary between the prism and the sample. In actual measurements by our Refractometers, the light source, the prism (nd=1.768) and the line sensor CCD are placed as shown in the right figure, and refractive index can be determined from the CCD address of the boundary (Critical angle) between the ÔLightÕ and ÔDarkÕ area on the line sensor by detecting the intensity of the reflected light with the CCD sensor. Temperature control in RA-520N/RA-500N is made by the thermal control unit on both sides of prism so that the temperature at the border of sample and prim can be maintained to the preset degree. Thus, the measurement of refractive index by RA series is most reliable and assured at all times. 8 RA-520N/RA-500N/RA-410 Brix Meter RA-410 Specification of Brix meter Introduction The RA-410 Brix Meter measures refractive index of liquid sample and converts it to Brix value or isomerized sugar concentration. Hard copies of measurement data can be output by the optional printer, and such data can even be downloaded to userõs personal computer for further data processing.
