Overview of topics Chapter 3 FERTILIZER INDUSTRIES Nitrogen industries Phosphorous industries Potassium industries Balaubramanian S 3
Fertilizer industries Fer/lizer industry is the major component of the agricultural chemicals industry which in turn a major chemical engineering contribu/on to agro-business. Three major components are are necessary in fer/lizers: (a) Nitrogen (N) required during early stages of plant growth to promote development of stems and leaves. (b) Phosphorus (P) which s/mulates early growth and accelerates seeding or fruit forma/on in later stages of growth. (c) Potassium (K) essen/al to the development of the starches of potatoes and grains, the sugar of fruits and vegetables and the fibrous materials of the plant; an ample supply of potassium in the soil some/mes helps to prevent disease and to lessen the effects of excessive nitrogen applica/on. Balaubramanian S 4
Fertilizer industries Nitrogen - Fer/lizers supplying nitrogen are prepared in two basic types: i. Mixed fer/lizers these contain three principal elements (nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium). These are generally granular solids. ii. Chemical nitrogen fer/lizers chemical compounds used separately where direct applica/on is required. Balaubramanian S 5
Fertilizer industries Nitrogen - Abundant nitrogen in the air is commercially fixed by reac/on with low-cost hydrogen to give ammonia. - This low cost chemical is used for supplying: (a) Nitrogen fer/lizers in the form of liquid and aqueous NH 3 solu/ons, ammonium salts and urea. (b) Nitric acid Balaubramanian S 6
Fertilizer industries Ammonia - End uses of Ammonia a) Direct applica/on as fer/lizer b) In the urea c) Ammonium phosphates d) In the manufacture of nitric acid Balaubramanian S 7
Fertilizer industries Ammonia Manufacture of synthe/c ammonia process Balaubramanian S 8
Fertilizer industries Ammonia Major steps involved in the manufacture of Ammonia (NH 3 ) - Ammonia synthesis gas (3 moles of pure H2:1 moles of pure N2) is compressed to the opera/ng pressure (100 1,000). - Filter is used to remove the compression oil and addi/onally through a high temperature converter. (converts CO and CO 2 to CH 4 and removes traces of H 2 O, H 2 S and P). - This is done by catalyst (Fe). Balaubramanian S 9
Fertilizer industries Ammonia The reac/on is Fe N 2 + 3H 2 2NH 3 ΔH = Kcal Rela/vely cool gas (NH 3 ) is added along the outside of converter tube walls to provide cooling. - The porous iron catalyst is used in the converter and the temperature maintained at O C. - The ammonia conversion achieved is about 30% depending on the process condi/ons. Balaubramanian S 10
Fertilizer industries Ammonia - The product ammonia is separated by separated by condensa/on with water cooling and then by refrigera/on. - The unconverted N 2 -H 2 mixture is recirculated to obtain 85 90% of Ammonia yield. Balaubramanian S 11
