Course overview: This class reviews chemical knowledge as applied to the petroleum and petrochemicals. An examination of the relationships between kinetics, thermodynamics, unit operations and process design is made. The beginning chemical student is introduced to the Chemical Industry in general, elements of Chemical Processes, conceptual development of Chemical Processes, Chemical Industry work management. Second semester dealer with polymer science the main mechanisms and the main commercial polymers their synthesis and their processing. 11. Course objective: The main objectives of the course are to: 1. to give students an introduction to the principles of general, physical, and organic chemistry required to assist with understanding of the petrochemical industry 2. to give students a sound understanding of the origin and extraction of petrochemicals and to introduce them to polymer chemistry and petrochemicals 3. to develop understanding of the basic chemical reactions employed in the petrochemical industry 4. to help in the acquisition of sound hands-on practical skills in the chemistry lab The course format is 3 h lectures and 3 h laboratory tutorial sessions per week.
