Bachelor theses Topics at the Institut für Katalyse (INCA)

Synthesis of ligands for hydrogenation reactions with base metals The following reaction was published in 2016 (L. Deng, B. Kang, U. Englert, J. Klankermayer, R. Palkovits, ChemSusChem 2016, 9, ): As Ru is a very precious metal it is of interest if the reaction also works with cheaper metals (e.g.: Fe, Co, etc...). Therefore task of the Bachelor work shall be the synthesis of this ligand and screening of various base metal precursors. 2

Synthesis of cyanotriynes and their utilization in [2+2+2] Cyclisations This bachelor thesis will cover the synthesis of a cyanotriynes and the deployment in [2+2+2] Cyclizations by applying various transition metal based catalysts. Especially the solvent, metal and ligand dependency of the formed product could be part of the investigation. D. Bhatt, N. Patel, H. Chowdhury, P. V. Bharatam, A. Goswami, Adv. Synth. Catal. 2018, 360,

Diastereomeric atropisomers by [2+2+2] Cyclizations Main topic of the bachelor thesis is the rapid synthesis of the chiral diyne substrate and catalytic cyclization experiments using cobalt-based catalysts under thermal and photochemical conditions. The products should be easily separable using chromatography and are useful structural platforms, e. g. for ligand synthesis. 4

Evaluation of novel CpCo(I) complexes for [2+2+2] cycloadditions Screening of reactivity facilitation by thermal/photchemical/microwave activation Recyclability studies Possibly immobilization via co polymerization with sytrene/divinylbenzene Desired after precursor complexes: (initial work in progress in a MSc thesis) 5

Ind*Ir(COD) in C-H functionalization reactions - Screening of suitable reaction conditions for low-valent Ir-catalyzed C-H activation - Synthesis/Derivatization of the catalyst (Ind*Ir(CO) 2, etc.) Ligand synthesis: O OH 1.(COCl) 2, DMF(cat.), DCM 2. AlCl 3, 1,2,3,4-tetramethylbenzene 3. HCl O quantitative 1. n-buli, Et 2 O, reflux n-bu Complexation to iridium 1. MeLi, Et 2 O, reflux 2. I 2, 100 C 1. LiAlH 4, THF 2. H 2 SO 4 2. I 2, 100 C traces Ir 47% 93% 92% C-H functionalization reactions with test substrates 6

Synthesis of novel NHC ligands for catalytic applications Target: Synthesis of novel transition metal complexes, e.g. of catalysts for olefin metathesis: This project would be focused on the preparation of the NHC ligand (seen at the left side). It will imply mostly organic synthesis. Once a satisfying route to this ligand has been found, metal complex synthesis from ruthenium salts and potentially catalytic test reactions will follow. 7

Synthesis of BIAN Ligands (Christoph Topf) Modification of the stereo-electronic properties: 8

Reduction of BIAN Ligands (Christoph Topf) Synthesis of bidentate (chiral) Diamines: 9

Preparation of Manganese-based Hydrogenation Catalysts (Christoph Topf) Introduction of a rigid backbone through the reduced BIANs including catalytic testing for the reduction of ketones or nitriles: 1 0

Mo-BIAN-Komplexe: Synthese und Katalyse (Christoph Topf) 1 1

Synthesis of Heterogeneous N-doped Mn catalysts (Christoph Topf) Controlled pyrolysis of Mn-corroles (jointly with Wolfgang Schöfberger): 1 2
