20 Registration and Instruction All persons intending to work with radioactive isotopes and the Seifert X-Ray equipment at our institute must register with the radiation safety expert IMLS West: Daniel Bopp deputy IMLS Ost: Werner Boll It is the responsibility of the group leaders to make sure, that only registered and instructed members of their group are working with radioactive compounds and the X-Ray equipment. Persons leaving the Institute should inform the radiation safety expert, return any dosimeters and provide a forwarding address for the record sheet if they plan to continue to work with radioactivity.

22 Dosimetry All persons working with strong beta-emitters and the X-Ray equipment will be issued with a TLD-badge for monitoring radiation. The badge must be attached to the outside of the lab coat. Badges are evaluated monthly by SUVA and the exposure is entered into your records ( Yellow leaflet, Schweizerisches persönliches Dosisdokument, column Hp resp. Hs). Please inform Bettina Cardel (55396) where you keep your badge. She will exchange the badges for evaluation once a month. In addition to the dosimetry, all persons professionally exposed to radiation have to undergo a medical entry examination. Contact Bettina for obtaining the appropriate forms

23 RULES FOR THE C-LAB Before working in the C-lab write the following into the list (on the door) your name the date the isotope 35 S, 3 H, 32 P or 14 C the estimated amount you used in mci

Call number 112 for emergencies. CLOSE OFF CONTAMINATED AREA Call number 175 to coordinate the measures that have to be taken

30 General Working Practice Use Personal Protective Equipment

31 Protective Clothing I Safety Glasses A must when handling acidic, alkalic or other irritant chemicals (labeled with S39) Must also be worn when handling radioactive material.

32 Protective Clothing II Gloves When handling hazardous chemicals wear rubber disposable gloves (a must when labeled with S 37). Remove and dispose of them before you leave the lab or answer the telephone. When handling radioactive material

33 Protective Clothing III Lab coats Cotton laboratory coats must be worn when working with corrosive chemicals. If spilled, it is easier to take off a lab coat than taking off your clothes. (And are cheaper to replace.) Also protects you from flash burns. a must when working in the C-lab

34 First aid first-aid box present in every laboratory band aid, disinfectant acid, alkali burns in the eye, flush immediately with lots of water

35 Emergency Medical Services CALL 112 intern or 144 extern

36 Fire If you discover a fire In all cases, set off the fire alarms via break glass panel or call 112. This will summon the rescue team and the fire service, and alert others to evacuate the building. Go to the control point outside of 23-H (next to the fountain) and inform the fire service about the situation in the building.

38 last but not least... pregnancy: try to refrain from working with irritating chemicals and from being exposed to ionizing radiation. Inform your supervisor trainees: if you supervise the lab work of a trainee (e.g. summer student), inform him/her about potential hazards and how to properly work with lab material and equipment
