1 Course Title Course Code PHARMACEUTICAL ENGINEERING II PH221 Lecture : 3 Course Credit Practical : 2 Tutorial : 0 Total : 5 Course Objectives On the completion of the course, students will be able to: To study the principle, theory, mechanism, working and construction of equipments of different unit operations (size reduction, size seperation, mixing, crystallization, fluid flow). To focus on graphical representation of various equipment for respective unit operations. To study the different materials used in the pharmaceutical plant constructions. To focus on plant layout and different material handling system. To simplify the pharmaceutical engineering with more practical orientation. Detailed Syllabus Sr. No. Name of Chapter & Details Hours Allotted Section-I 1 Size Reduction: Objectives, theory of size reduction, factors influencing size reduction, energy requirements in size reduction, study of various mills including ball mill, hammer 07
2 mill, fluid energy mill, colloid mill, cutter mill, etc. Introduction to methods of generating nanoparticles. Numericals of size reduction theory. Application of size reduction in pharma industry. 2 Size Separation: Principles of size separation, screens- types, pharmacopoeial standards, screening methods, screening equipments including shaking and vibrating screens, gyratory screens, sedimentation tank, elutriation and cyclone type separators etc. Application of size separation in pharmacy, angle of repose, carr s index, hausner ratio Crystallization: Characteristics of crystals like-purity, size, shape, geometry, habit, forms size. Objectives, crystal lattice, Solubility curves and calculation of yields, formation of crystals, supersaturation theory, factors affecting crystallization process, crystal growth. Study of various types of crystallizers including Swenson walker, tanks, circulating magma, vacuum and crystal cooling crystallizer, etc., Caking of crystals and its prevention, Spherical crystallization and its application in pharmacy, brief introduction of co-crystals, polymorphism and amorphous forms of drugs. 09 Section-II 4 Mixing: Theory of mixing, mixing mechanisms, solid solid, solid liquid and liquid liquid mixing equipments. Importance of content uniformity in solid dosage forms. Application of mixing operation in pharma industry. 06
3 5 Fluid Flow: Type of steady flow, Reynold number & its significance, types of pressure, viscosity, concept of boundary layers, total energy balance and total mechanical energy balance, losses in mechanical energy of fluids, basic equations of fluid flow, valves, flow meters, manometers. Mathematical problems Plant location: 03 Layout, utilities and services. 7 Materials of Pharmaceutical Plant Construction and corrosion study: 05 General study of composition, corrosion resistance, properties, factors affecting the selection of material of pharmaceutical plant construction with special reference to stainless steel and glass. Corrosion-types, causes, theories of corrosion and its prevention. Pharmaceutical Engineering II (Practical) 1. Particle size distribution using sieving method. 2. Particle size measuremnt using microscopy method. 3. Particle size for given suspension using Andreasen pipette. 4. Methods of crystallization, study of crystal habit. 5. Mier s supersolubility curve. 6. Effect of time and speed on the solid liquid mixing. 7. Calibration of the given orifice meter and to find out coefficient of orifice meter. 8. Calibration of the given venturi meter and to find out coefficient of venturi meter. 9. Calibration of the given rota meter.
4 10. Calibration of measure the gasline pressure with difference manometer. 11. Demonstration of various mills used for particle size reduction. 12. Other practical covering the syllabus aspects. Instructional Method and Pedagogy: Lectures will be conducted with the aid of multi-media projector, black board, OHP etc. Specific discussion questions will be assigned each week. It is important that everyone participate in the discussion. Students will be interrogated for understanding of practical and theoretical aspects in each practical on a regular basis. Their internal practical marks will include regular practical evaluation. Students Learning Outcomes: At the end of the course the students will be able to: Understand the mechanism, working and construction of equipments of different unit operations.
