Summer The least exciting plant time in my garden. The season with the least maintenance, which is nice since it is the hottest time. The greenest season and perhaps the most serene and soothing. The season with the most garden tours! 1
Summer Olea wilsonii, Phormium tenax, Pennisetum orientale, Hebe Quicksilver, Chamaecyparis pisifera Gold Thread, Cotinus Royal Purple Sedum Voodoo, Abies arnoldiana Poulsen, Acer palmatum Fireglow, Euphorbia Blackbird. Cedrus atlantica Glauca Pendula around the front door. 2
Summer Olea wilsonii, Cotinus Royal Purple, Phormium tenax, Pennisetum orientale, Chamaecyparis p. Gold Thread, Abies arnoldiana Poulsen Seed pods on Cercis chinensis 3
Summer Arbutus unedo, Iris pallida aureo variegata, Phormium Dusky Chief, Cercis canadensis Hearts of Gold, Leycesteria formosa Notbruce, Geranium Rozanne 4
Summer Red Echeveria, Kalanchoe thyrsiflora, Aeonium Sunburst 5
Summer Arctostaphylos Howard McMinn, Euonymous Emerald Gaiety, Lagerstroemia Tuscarora, Cercis chinensis, Physocarpus Coppertina, Spirea japonica Goldflame, Muhlenbergia rigens, Drimys lanceolata 6
Autumn In California, often the most pleasant season to be outside. The light is far more pleasing than the harsh summer glare. The best time to plant. Autumn is when my garden really begins to glow. Orange is the most prominent color in the garden. 7
Autumn Malus Professor Sprenger, Olea wilsonii, Phormium Dusky Chief, Melaleuca incana, Arctostaphylos Howard McMinn, Phormium Golden Ray, Chamaecyparis Boulevard,Leucadendron Jester, Pinus t. Thunderhead, Abelia Kaleidescope 8

Autumn Chondropetalum elephantinum, Dodonea viscosa, Pinus thunbergii, Phormium Rainbow Queen, Chamaecyparis obtusa Kojolk Hiba, Hebe Mrs. Winder 10
Autumn Sequoia sempervirens Cantab, Nandina x domestica Gulfstream, Abelia Kaleidescope 11

Autumn Cotinus Grace in front of Olea wilsonii Cornus stolonifera Silver and Gold 15
Winter The season in which my garden shines by comparison. Very weak light, very short days. Reds and yellows pop in this light. The season in which structure becomes most important. Red is the most prominent color in the garden. 16
Winter Olea wilsonii, Acer p. Fireglow, Calamagrostis Karl Foerster, Abies arnoldiana Poulsen, Euonymus Emerald Gaiety, Panicum virgatum Heavy Metal, Chamaecyparis p. Gold Thread, Sedum spurium Voodoo, cupressus citridori, Cotinus c. Royal Purple, Abies koreana Horstmann s Silberlocke, Pennisetum orientale, Abelia x grandifolia Panache 17

Winter Cryptomeria japonica Elegans compacta, Phormium Golden Ray, Phormium Dusky Chief, Podocarpus elongatus Monmal. Malus Professor Sprenger in background. 20

Winter Geranium Rozanne The Rose Garden 22
Winter Chamaecyparis lawsoniana Golden King Dodonea viscosa, Phormium Rainbow Queen, Hebe Mrs. Winder 23
Spring My garden gets going fast in spring, because the plants do not require refreshing and cutting back. New foliage is often as decorative as flowers, and never requires dead-heading. Conifers green up with longer days and provide a rich, lush backdrop for brighter colors. Yellow is the predominant color in the garden. 24
Spring Carpinus carolineana, Cotinus Royal Purple, Cupressus a. Blue Ice, Cortaderia s. Silver Comet, Nandina d. Royal Princess, Photinia Cassini, Phormium Golden Ray, Phormium Dusky Chief, Pinus wallichiana Nana, Melaleuca incanum, Malus Professor Sprenger, Cedrus atlantica glauca pendula 25
Spring Pinus t. Thunderhead, Juniperus Lime Glow, Arctostaphylos Emerald Carpet, Chamaecyparis p. Curly Tops, Pinus mugo mugo, Leucadendron Safari Sunsett, Sambcus nigra Variegata 26

A word about pollination I am a beekeeper and believe that it is important to provide a nectar source for pollinators, both native and introduced (honey bees). A common misperception is that bees prefer showy flowers, and that we must plant what we consider to be flowering plants for them. Bees and native pollinators actually do fine with plants with very small, insignificant blooms. Many of my non-flowering plants are great sources of nectar. 31

Conclusion A focus on foliage provides more year-round interest than a focus on perennials. Pay attention to how much down time each plant has, then select plants with minimal down time! Most trees and shrubs require less ongoing maintenance than perennials, less fertilizer and have fewer pest problems. Trees and shrubs provide structure, or bones, that perennials cannot, all year long. Use flowering perennials as accents and think about all FOUR seasons when planning your garden. 41
