5 Preface to the Third Edition Written and oral history has a tendency to be glamorized, romanticized, "barbarian-ized" and fantasized by time, tradition, retelling and, in modern day, Hollywood. Astrologers, perhaps more than any other group, possess the tools to dig into the past and examine personality and behavioral patterns of individuals as well as entire cultures. Our source, the ultimate history book is an ephemeris (the Greek word that means "timetable"). Using our ephemeris and our knowledge of planetary energies we can read history with a full understanding of the forces at work in any given situation. In most of our writings we use historical events, eras and timelines as well as characters from history to illustrate how astrology works. That same data holds the key that can unlock the door to truth. This volume is the result of extensive research to delineate the royal lines of England and Scotland. Thanks to many readers, new source material and outside input, "British Royalty" has evolved into an updated second edition in which most of the charts are calculated for recorded birth times although some are still solar charts with the Moon's position at Noon. A few are in the form of "Rectified" or "Speculative" charts. While we have chosen to present each ruler as a separate entity, Marc Penfield, in his excellent work "Stars over England", views the royal successions in time frames. We highly recommend his book and congratulate him on his successful research. Our vignettes will give you brief information about the ruler, the reign and, when possible, documented insight into his or her personality and character. As you read, remembering your hi st ory lesso ns f ro m all sources, think about the royal personage and the legend surrounding him or her. Then consider the horoscope. What was the reality? 3

7 INTRODUCTION Because of the lack of recorded history during the dark ages it was not possible to find birth data, or much else, on the earliest kings of either Scotland or England. Due to tribal natures, many small kingdoms, the fact that the islands were always open to invasion from northern and southern Europe, and the lack of two Queens to unite them (which finally happened after 700 years) England and Scotland developed separately but on approximately the same evolutionary scale. From the middle of the 11th century information was recorded more carefully and protected better so that there are birth times available for several of the older rulers and most of the more recent ones. In lieu of a birth time, solar charts are set with the Sun on the 1st house cusp and the Moon calculated for Noon at the birth location. There has been an effort made to furnish information about each subject (oops, ruler) that would provide data as to what historians thought would be of interest. Astrologers, of course have the upper hand; we become intimate upon first glance. This data should be helpful to those who pursue medical astrology because heredity lines show a repetition of ailments, both physical and mental. For those interested in family relationships and genealogical chart comparisons, these data should document what history has reported (fratricide, in-breeding, etc.). After this brief report of the first 400 years, you will find a lineage chart listing each ruler from Egbert, King of Wessex and Fergus MorMacErc of Dalriada (later Scotland) to Queen Elizabeth II. In Section IV is a listing of the current succession with birth data. The bulk of this work is comprised of the actual charts of the rulers of Scotland and England (Great Britain) from Any additional information regarding accurate birth data is welcomed and can be sent to the authors at the address listed on the title page. 5

8 Egbert, King of Wessex, ruled from 802 until his death in 839. He united several of the mini-kingdoms, which were probably like serfdoms, and ruled Kent, Surrey, Sussex and Essex. Even those in the far reaches of Northumbria paid lip service so that he would come to their aid during the frequent Danish raids. At about that same time, Kenneth I MacAlpin united Strathclyde and Lothian which had been part of Northumbria and added that area to his kingdom, Dalriada. He had formed an alliance between the Picts and the Scots who, as Celts, had migrated from Ireland. King Harold III of Norway moved to invade England in January 1066 intending to establish Viking rule. William, the illegitimate son of Duke Robert I of Normandy had acquired large amounts of land in England and did not want to lose it to Norway. On second thought, he decided he did not want England to have it either, so he mounted an invasion just as the new king of England, Harold II defeated the Viking king, Harold III. When William and an already fought-out Harold III met at Hastings there was no contest. William won handily and, known as William the Conqueror, he was crowned William I, king of England, on December 25, As a parallel, Duncan I, a Celtic Scot, started in 1034 to bring numerous small kingdoms under his rulership and was relatively successfully. He became known as the first general ruler of what would henceforth be called Scotland. Anyone familiar with Shakespeare knows what happened next with Duncan, Macbeth, Malcolm and the three witches. When it was all said and done, Malcolm, the late Duncan's son, organized a feudal Scottish state, married a saint (Queen Margaret was canonized in 1250) and brought the English language to Scotland. Love affairs, coups, skeletons in the closets, and intrigue lurk within the following pages. Settle down, kick off your shoes and get ready. 6
