12 What is a fairy tale? Name: There are many different kinds of stories. We can sort stories into groups or categories with similar characteristics. These groups are called genres of literature. A fairy tale is a fictional story with magical beings and can take place in a magical or faraway land. Fairy tales come from oral tradition and were told by one generation to the next until someone finally wrote it down. Fairy tales have good and evil characters and usually royalty. Something magical always happens, such as a spell, and during the story a crazy problem has to be solved. Once the problem is solved, everyone lives happily ever after. A fairy tale often teaches the reader a lesson. After reading What is a fairy tale?, answer the following questions using complete sentences. 1. What is a genre of literature? 2. Name at least 3 different genres of literature. 3. What are the characteristics of a fairy tale? 4. How does a fairy tale end? 5. On the back of this paper explain why The Sleeping Beauty is considered a fairy tale. Be sure to include what you have learned about the fairy tale genre. What elements of magic are in The Sleeping Beauty? 12
13 A Magical Scene What elements of magic can you find in The Sleeping Beauty? Brainstorm and then write your ideas on the scrolls below. On the paper provided, draw a picture to illustrate one magical scene from The Sleeping Beauty. Be sure to write a caption below your picture to explain the magic shown in your illustration. 13

15 Is it a fairy tale? We ve talked about fairy tales and you have seen The Sleeping Beauty. What are some other fairy tales that you know? How do you know that these stories are also fairy tales? Put yourself in their shoes The fairy tale is a literary genre in many different cultures. Two famous storytellers, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm who lived in Germany in the early 1800s wrote The Sleeping Beauty. If a Native American or a person in ancient Egypt had written a version of The Sleeping Beauty, the setting and characters would probably reflect the people and places most familiar to them. Pretend you are a Native American or ancient Egyptian storyteller and tell the story of The Sleeping Beauty in words and/or pictures so it would make sense to children of this culture. Once upon a time Fairy tales often begin, Once upon a time, a long time ago. Imagine what Sleeping Beauty s life was like long ago. Complete the chart by answering the questions for both Long Ago and Today. 100 Years From Now Do you ever wonder what life will be like in the future? Imagine if you fell asleep for 100 years. When you awake how will the world be different? Much will have changed like clothing, homes and buildings, travel, and communication. Think about what else will be new to you. What will the environment look like? Will there still be countries? Who will be our leaders and what will people be concerned with and care about? Describe this unfamiliar world and what led to these changes. 15
16 Long Ago Today What do clothes look like? How do people travel? What do homes look like? How do people celebrate special events? Name: 16
