I also have a brief bit on the astrological transits that aligned when John Kerry was confirmed as Secretary of State. We look to writing much more in so, we better get busy because we got off to a slow start! More to come soon! 2 The Traveler s Well Newsletter February 23, 2013 Page 2 Jupiter and Mercury Retrograde Two Perspectives on Meaning As we move into the first quarter of 2013, transiting Jupiter and Mercury are providing us with an opportunity to develop a new and more complete sense of perspective and meaning in our lives: First, transiting Jupiter turned direct at 6 Gemini on January 30, 2013, after having been retrograde since early October Second, transiting Mercury will turn retrograde on February 23, 2013 at 19 Pisces. As we begin to explore these astrological events, we turn our focus to thoughts, ideas, perceptions and meaning. A key to these transits is that the planets Mercury and Jupiter and the signs of Gemini and Pisces are concerned with our perception of the world and how we develop an ultimate sense of meaning in our lives. With Jupiter in Gemini and Mercury turning retrograde in Pisces, our perception of meaning is being guided in unique ways at this time. Here we have Jupiter (at the top with the lightening bolts and eagle) and Mercury (lower-right with winged feet). Here Mercury is preparing to fly away and deliver the message of Jupiter's vision. Mercury Retrograde is generally thought of as a time when technology goes sideways, when computers crash and the lights go out (or, all of the above at the same time)! Which is exactly what I thought when the lights went out in the second half of the Super Bowl earlier this year. Was it Beyonce or was it already Mercury Retrograde and I had simply lost track of time? No! Mercury was

3 The Traveler s Well Newsletter February 23, 2013 Page 3 still moving forward and Beyonce might have actually been singing during the half time show (Editor's Note: both Jupiter and Mercury enjoy fun and humor!). So, let's have some fun looking at this! Jupiter, in myth, is Mercury's father and, in the zodiac, he is a visionary counterpart. These two planets are both concerned with meaning, but from different, yet, complimentary perspectives. Our task during this time is to consider the events we experience and the ideas we have in order to deepen our sense of meaning and the big picture in life. Envisioning the future (Jupiter) and exploring the ideas and words that give structure to that future, not to mention the ability to communicate your vision, are central to this time. In this article, join me on two mythological journeys. First, allow the inspiration in your life to be the wind beneath the wings of Jupiter's eagle and view the world from new heights. Then, strap on Mercury's winged heals and allow his playful mind to bring unexpected thoughts that reveal new possibilities. Together, Mercury and Jupiter provide the potential to discover new insights into the meaning of life and the journey of the soul! Jupiter's Last Dash Through Gemini Since transiting Jupiter provides insight into the big picture and our vision of the future, let's begin here. Transiting Jupiter has turned direct at 6 Gemini on January 30, 2013 and he will quickly move through the sign of Gemini until late June 2013, when Jupiter moves into the sign of Cancer on June 25, 2013 (June 26, 2013 from Europe to Asia). So, we basically have until the Summer Solstice to explore Jupiter in Gemini. From Jupiter's big picture perspective and with transiting Jupiter in Gemini, it is a time of exploring the ideas that are in the service of your philosophy of life. Jupiter wants to expand our philosophy of life and to clarify the capacity of the words we use to clarify and express what we believe. Our philosophy is the topic, words and ideas are the material that we use to define our philosophy.

4 The Traveler s Well Newsletter February 23, 2013 Page 4 Jupiter, his lightening bolts and Eagle So, this is a great time to explore the words that each of us use to define our philosophy of life. While a "philosophy of life" is a grand thing, that philosophy is strengthened by clarifying the words. Consider the image of Jupiter with his eagle, who floats above the trees and other obstacles that block our vision so that we can now see clearly, while still being able to hear the chatter of Gemini's sparrows chirping in the trees and bushes below (the sparrows are always busy and rarely have time to float high in the sky and gain perspective). Thus, Jupiter in Gemini both hears the different voices and perspectives of Gemini's sparrows, while still being able to see into the distance. Ideas and vision work together over the next four months. For Jupiter, it is important to hear the chatter of the sparrows, because Jupiter can cause us to become overconfident and think that we are the only one how knows the truth and this can be a block for us. Hearing the chatter reminds us that there are other points of view in the world! The greater the resonance between our words and our philosophy, the clearer the words we use will define and represent who we truly are. The ability to express ourselves clearly and effectively is at the core of: our ability to get the job we want via a great interview, our awareness of what job and what career is right for us because we understand our vision, our ability to attract the friends and partners that bring real joy into our lives because we clearly project who we are, our ability to talk about the services we provide because we are clearer about our passions and skills, and

5 The Traveler s Well Newsletter February 23, 2013 Page 5 our ability to understand who we are meant to serve or who is part of our tribe. So, while Jupiter is moving through Gemini over the next four months, we are not meant to expound our perspective on the truth to others or to attempt to convert others to our point of view, but rather to expand our own perspective. We have an opportunity for greater clarity about what we believe and how those beliefs effectively guide our life day to day. Mutability - Mercury in Pisces and Jupiter in Gemini There are a number of themes that are shared by the planets Jupiter and Mercury and the signs of Gemini and Pisces. First, Jupiter and Mercury are primarily logical in their orientation. While Jupiter reveals the big picture and where we are headed, Mercury contains the details and clarifies a practical path to actually get something done. In the natural zodiac, Mercury and Jupiter rule the opposing signs and houses. Mercury rules Gemini and the third House and Jupiter rules Sagittarius and the ninth house. This does not mean that they are contrary, but rather complimentary to one another and by taking advantage of the best that each has to offer, we can work very effectively. Second, these two planets are connected with fun and humor. You could say that Jupiter loves to laugh at the jokes and pranks played by Mercury. So, let this be a playful time during which we explore the connection between ideas and meaning. When you put on Mercury's winged sandals, let his trickster side of his insights allow you to consider perspectives you might not have been aware of before. And, do remember, when you look to define your vision (Jupiter), be willing to consider alternatives! Third, and perhaps most importantly, Jupiter, Mercury, Gemini and Pisces are all mutable energies that contain the psychological need to search for meaning via mutability or embracing change. Jupiter does not reveal a new potential future that is identical to the present, he offers something that is better, more meaningful, and in some way - different. Mercury will fly between many alternative ideas very quickly! This is a time that holds an opportunity to identify the various threads that weaves a collection of ideas into a tapestry of beauty and meaning. The central theme is to be aware of how Mercury's ideas and Jupiter's vision and philosophy work together and complement each other. Mercury Retrograde in Pisces During this Mercury retrograde period, the god of retrograde movement will be entirely in the sign of Pisces. So let's begin by considering Mercury retrograde and then add the quality of Pisces into the astrological potion.

6 The Traveler s Well Newsletter February 23, 2013 Page 6 When Mercury was born, the first thing he did was to play a trick on his brother, Apollo. Mercury stole Apollo's cattle by teaching them to walk backwards (this is how Mercury became the god of retrograde movement). Mercury walked the cattle backwards along the same path they had taken to reach the field they were grazing in. From Apollo's perspective in his Sun chariot, his cattle had disappeared from their field, but so had their tracks. They appeared to have simply disappeared. Apollo was left to discover the whereabouts of his cattle through new and unique ways of thinking. That is the "magic" of Mercury retrograde! Apollo While Mercury is retrograde, we are asked to consider alternative and perhaps completely new ways of thinking about our lives. Mercury retrograde asks questions that provide an opportunity to reconsider our perspective and to look for new ways to answer life's questions. He asks "Are your perspectives flexible enough to embrace more of the reality in this complex world in which we live?" Enter the sign of Pisces, which like Mercury is also a mutable energy that seeks to promote adjustment and change to our perspectives on life and meaning. However, Pisces approaches the notion of life and meaning from a very different perspective than Mercury. Pisces is not concerned with ideas that are logical, but rather ideas that are magical. Mercury tells us that the sky is comprised of air and clouds and that they are all made up of atoms and molecules (detailed observations). Mercury is very logical. Enter the sign of Pisces that changes Mercury's perception of the sky so that Mercury can render a lilting poem about the colors and mood of the sunset and the feelings that are inspired when we gaze on it. During this Mercury retrograde, when we re-examine our world, we are meant to think in terms of poems and paintings or a song that inspires us to linger, to not think so hard and even to share how we feel. Mercury in Pisces wants us to share what we long for, what we yearn for. The yearning of Pisces is not for the small or practical things in life, but the things that inspire us. So, the challenge can be to make sure the Mercury's logical and detailed examination does not interfere with the transmission of magic! We are meant to explore what it is that we yearn for and in doing so, to put aside our logical habits for a while. Mercury retrograde in Pisces provides an opportunity to reconsider the larger questions of life and to seek answers that may not have been apparent when Mercury is direct. Because he is

7 The Traveler s Well Newsletter February 23, 2013 Page 7 retrograde, he provides an opportunity to reconsider. Like Apollo, if we keep looking to find "where the tracks went", we will never find our "cattle" and we will remain confounded and confused. We are meant to explore meaning in new ways. I am reminded of the words of the Rutles, a parody of The Beatles by Monty Python, "You had better think twice, at least once more". Yes, Mercury Retrograde can be experienced in external ways. Technology glitches, calendar miscues, the need to revisit decisions or even re-negotiate contracts can be more prevalent during this time. So, if Mercury Retrograde affects you personally, keep your radar up during this period. How to Embrace Both Mercury Retrograde and Jupiter The intention of Mercury retrograde in Pisces with Jupiter in Gemini is to spend the next three weeks or so pondering alternative ideas that deepen your philosophy of life. In this regard, both Jupiter and Mercury have something important to add to the mix. Jupiter says take the workshop you have avoided or pick up the book you have neglected. Put yourself in a position to learn something new that will enrich your life. The key is to ask which workshop, which book seems to offer something meaningful to you. Consider putting pencil to paper and write out the key ideas in your philosophy of life. While writing down your philosophy may feel a monumental task, as if you are being asked to pen the Declaration of Independence - so, keep it simple! Make it fun! As I am writing, I am reminded of each time I saw Ringo Starr and his All Star Band on stage, he would always say "Peace and Love". A philosophy can be as simple as that. What is it that you believe in? Keeping it simple is so very important because Jupiter always wants to expand - he urges us to fly higher and higher - this often makes our vision seem so far out of reach - so huge and hard to define - where to begin. Be aware of this and don't let it get out of proportion - allow it to be simple and to deepen from there over time. When Mercury is retrograde AND in Pisces, you have an opportunity to ask yourself how you feel about the ideas and philosophy that describe you and your approach to life. Allow yourself to become quiet and your mind to be a bit more settled than usual (this is important because Mercury can promote busy-ness and cause us to lose focus). Meditate or take a long walk through the park or along the beach. Read poetry, a great story or listen to inspired music, admire art. For me, I will pick up The Prophet or The Treasured Writings of Kahlil Gibran or the Lord of the Rings or perhaps listen to the Moody Blues, John Lennon, George Harrison or Christy Moore (our favorite Irish poet - musician). Each of these leads me from thoughts, to questions, to wonder. Put Mercury together with Jupiter and have an inspired conversation with a friend that both inspires and challenges you. As Gibran wrote in The Prophet on friendship, "And let there be no purpose in friendship save the deepening of the spirit".

The magic of inspired thought is their gift, if you choose to put on Mercury's winged sandals and allow him to be your guide. May your thoughts be inspired in the weeks ahead! Return To Top John Kerry - Next Chapter On January 29, 2013, John Kerry was confirmed as the new Secretary of State. This confirmation marks a new chapter in Kerry's life. As you might guess, there was a synchronicity between his confirmation vote in the U.S. Senate and two fabulous transits to his birth chart: First, Jupiter was station directly conjunct Kerry's natal Uranus. This transit between Jupiter and Uranus features two planets that love working together and often result in being the fireworks that announce the next phase of life. Second, Kerry has a Solar Arc between his Midheaven and his Ascendant, which indicates that his social identity (or career position via the Midheaven) and his personal identity (via the Ascendant) are merged and highlighted. They seem to say, "Announcing John Kerry, Secretary of State". Congratulations John!
