USC-Namseoul Summer Certificate Program Laboratory Manual for Day 5 Data Analysis Outline a. Google Documents i.how to use Google documentation (web-app) & why we use it ii.how to use spreadsheet b. Data analysis i.what s in data file and what does those numbers mean 1. Timestamp 2. Latitude and Longitude ii.how to import txt file to Google spread sheet iii.analyze your data iv.compare with the result from TA. How to use Google documentation (web-app) & why we use it 1. Google Documentation is Web-Application that you can use whenever you have Internet connection. 2. Why we are using Google docs. a. You can easily share the documents with your friends b. You don t need to install any program. c. It doesn t matter if you have MAC, PC or Linux system d. It s FREE 3. How to use Google Doc. a. Go to Google, and create a new account (if you don t have one) b. Go to Document tab or click this. 4. Extra (if you have time) a. Convert Unix Timestamp to human readable time and data How to use spreadsheet 1. Click file tab->new->spreadsheet 2. Figure1.1 is the example of spreadsheet 3. To calculate the data, you need to give a formula 4. Click the first cell 5. Write the formula starting with = like figure You can click the cell instead of writing B1, C1 or D1 1
7. Give the value for each cell like figure If you want to use your formula for more date just drag down the square like figure 1.3 then you will get the result like figure 1.4 Figure1.1 Figure1.2 Figure 1.3 2
Figure 1.4 Data Analysis You will analyze the data you collected from Trojan race. During the game, you ve collected your activities, such as running walking, location and corresponding time by GPS. You will use your gps locations of your path and gps coordinate of a token. What are in the data file and what do those numbers mean Timestamp (Extra, read it for your benefit, when you have time) Timestamp is measured in Mille seconds form 1970 January first using UCT (time zone). Time zone of LA is UCT -8, but during summer we use summer daylight saving time zone. So we will use UCT -7. Using excel you can convert this timestamp to human readable date/time. Latitude and Longitude How Do Latitudes and Longitudes Work? Geo-coordinates are the X and Y values that we use to locate a position on the earth surface, just like locating a point on a Cartesian graph. The figure below shows the standard system most widely used today. The center of the system (0,0) is a point in the Gulf of Guinea, offshore West Africa. The maximum and minimum values of the longitude and latitude are shown. Latitude +90 is the North Pole; latitude -90 is the South Pole. The maximum and minimum longitudes (+180 and -180) are along the same north-south line through the middle of the Pacific Ocean, because the earth is round. 3
The north south line where longitude = 0 is called the Greenwich Meridian or Prime Meridian. The units of measurement are DEGREES of longitude and latitude, symbolized by a small raised circle ( ). Geo-coordinates should always be written as "signed decimal degrees", meaning: Fractional parts of a degree must be written as decimals. The sign of the longitude or latitude should be specified, but if it is positive it can be omitted (because it is universally understood to be positive). Where are the positive and negative coordinates located on the earth? Above the Equator and East of the Prime Meridian, the longitudes and latitudes are all positive. This includes most of Europe and Asia. 4
Below the Equator and East of the Prime Meridian, the longitudes are positive and the latitudes are negative. This includes much of Africa, Oceania, and Australia. Below the Equator and West of the Prime Meridian, the longitudes and latitudes are negative. This includes much of South America. Above the Equator and West of the Prime Meridian, the longitudes are negative and the latitudes are positive. This includes Central America and North America. How to import txt file to Google spread sheet Click Edit tab and click import choose your gpsreadings.txt file with option Replace data... 5
Now, your gps locations are imported into Google spreadsheet. This is the example of imported data Next, let s do some calculation on the data. Analyze your data Calculate the distance between two points The figure is example how you will calculate the data. 6
Calculate the distance between two points 1. Convert degrees to radian a. Latitude/(180/pi) or longitude/(180/pi) 2. Calculate Arc arccos[ cos(alat) * cos(along) * cos(blat) * cos(blong) + cos(alat) * sin(along) * cos(blat) * sin(blong) + sin(alat) * sin(blat)] * Earths_radius Extra if time allowed Translate timestamps into human readable date/time format Current Timestamp is recorded in mille second. Convert Timestamp into days A1/1000 => mille second to second /(60*60*24) since excel use day on =((A1/1000)/86400) (-7/24) The = seconds in a day. The = number of days from Xcell s 1900 (day one) to unix 1970 (day zero or one?) 7
