13 Description of Course Format Criteria Focus: of Case Study Semester Project 1. Project Large and/or format major - holistic, in scope; broad, and conceptual in nature and can be described more as the conceptual design 3. (30% In the complete) future planning stages of and a more not designed traditional yet; Capstone design project 2. Regional (in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, or Delaware) and urban in focus; 4. Real project sponsored by an external organization (public or private). The external organization participates throughout the semester with the faculty and students on the project; and, 5. 28 Challenges of Final Design Implementation Avoid extreme traffic congestion during construction Provide effective alternative to disrupted trolley service Work around CSX trains to avoid delays and increased costs Divide responsibilities accordingly among various stakeholders Secure necessary funding

30 Survey Results from Darby Borough 22 responses The most important aspects of the project were determined to be: 1. Pedestrian safety 2. Vehicular safety 3. Minimize traffic congestion 4. Visual appeal 5. Minimize noise at crossing

31 Survey Results If the CSX line was to be moved below grade, the newly created open space should be: Turned into a park (10) Turned into a playground (6) Used for businesses or stores (4) It should remain uncovered (2) Parking directly in front of stores and businesses is very important
